Is it time to drop "North Texas" and become UNT?
NM Green replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
This is an April fools question, right? North Texas all the way. My longhorn friends and metro peeps call it unt. But I call it North Texas because it says all that it needs to say - we are North Texas and not smu tcu uta or utd. We encompass all of this vibrant region which ranks as one of the most progressively successful engines in the world. I even got used to seeing No Texas which bugged for half a year then when we won it just looked better. If I were MTSU I wouldn't change a thing. They have carved out their directional school niche just fine. GMG -
The banners I have seen that have a wow effect at staged points in the game look like this. I've seen the BYU flag unfurl at a late stage timeout in the Marriott Center. Last year at UTSA the student section unveiled a Come and Take It banner between the 3rd and 4th quarters. This has to be choreographed and what impressed me about UTSA was that all of a sudden the Roadrunner mascot ran onto the field and stood on his logo with the come and take it flag. He started waving it around as the music built and got stronger more powerful. You could tell something was coming but as a first time visitor didn't know what. It finally crescendoed and the students started unveiling and shaking the Come and Take It banner in the student section behind the goalposts. The student section was hopping up and down and it was impressive. Almost giving the team and crowd a final "bring it home" build up. I can't find anything on youtube or pics which is surprising because it is incredibly well done. BYU's simply built up and then all of a sudden the banner appears then disappears. You can find a snippet in the 48 second video on you tube titled: BYU ROC Student Section Highlight. Of course you would probably want to try to coordinate it with the Green Brigade first but they are stuck on Hey Baby (uggghhhhh) or with the sound man and get some jaws or start wars or game of thrones music building and crushing through the system. I would totally donate to a banner ritual. What would our banner read: 1. Go Mean Green 2. Go Mean Green and SOW 3. Just the SOW 4. or my favorite to quote our famous alum DO YOU BELIEVE and SOW I would contact the student spirit leaders at UTSA to get more details on how they execute this. I've been to many college games across the land and good ole San Antonio did something that impressed me in person. GMG

Yeah I would settle for moving in that direction in the coming years. UTA, TCU and SMU crushing it - time for us to step up. GMG

You all are the group to get the Big Banner unveil between 3rd and 4th quarters this fall. 1. Need to buy the banner 2. Need verbiage and graphic for the banner 3. Need to coordinate with band to transition away from their traditional 3rd quarter song - or perhaps make the unveiling between 1st and 2nd quarter or at some point. it needs the band to participate for effect - see utsa between 3rd and 4th quarter and their banner "Come and Take It." Sorry to hijack but while you all are gathering figure out how to become the spirit czar group with Wren backing and muscling up to the table to get even more awesome things going. Great job guys and gals keep up the outstanding work! GMG

Mine still in tact: Gonzaga; Baylor; Kansas; UCLA I have Baylor beating Gonzaga and UCLA beating Kansas. I have Baylor beating UCLA. This is getting interesting as I had Xavier taking out Arizona tonight. On a side note I think Sean Miller is a terrible coach. Arizona deserves better than that dude. The Cats have too much talent to play that stupid in the final minutes of the game. Gonzaga gonna smoke the X on Saturday. GMG

Very proud of that program. Good for UTA. Go Mavericks! GMG

I like how Pete Carroll chimed in with a Fight On salute....so says the coach who left a trail of death, destruction and dead bodies in the side of the road after he left. Hate that FGCU played FSU first round. The eagles are fun fun fun to watch and could have beaten many others. GMG

MGB: Details of McCasland's contract with UNT
NM Green replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I'm excited to buy season tickets for the very first time and visit the Superpit for the first time in years! Welcome Coach and GMG -
That snickers almost made me spit out my cocktail. Too funny. ootics are important and to Emmitts point small changes are a good sign. To me he has to hit a home run with the basketball coach. Today I watched Arizona and wAshington followed Baylor and Kansas - didn't even check if we played. I saw la tech was blowing out someone and middle appears to be good. So you have diehard checked out after December 26 for almost 8 months. Can't run a business like that especially when all the diehard wants to do is throw money at you. Go get a proven coach who can build the program back and help build the new arena. Does the SFA coach have any intrigue? They appear a bit down. Go get the uta coach so we can hopefully be as good as uta one day. Dang that is hard to say. Wren optics matter. GMG

UTEP will bring fans either way but I love the date. We owe the Miners a good ole Denton Beat Down. Fun weekend late in the season! GMG

I am so bummed about UNT right now. I get psyched up and huddle in front of the TV to watch BYU of the West Coast Conference and Long Beach State vs UC Irvine Big West Basketball and don't even follow my alma mater after football. So many emotions about this program right now: 1. I feel like Football is on the right track, but I see San Antonio making amazing waves. So is our football on track and if so will it even be enough to beat the likes of UTSA, La Tech and FAU in the future. 2. Is Wren Baker Rick Villareal? I don't want to believe so but I don't see the drain the swamp energy I was hoping for - How on earth does Benford still have a job. How can he touch my great University and be allowed to bludgeon my degree week by week on his way out. 3. My Running Rebels suck, everything North Texas stinks right now in February. I root on the Cougars of BYU while wondering what happened to my Great University and do they even have a plan. Rick didn't. Wren doesn't seem to. This upside down state of Mean Green Athletics has just taken its toll. Nevertheless. GMG P.S. - I don't want and am not asking for cheerleaders in Green and White. I am looking for fearless decision makers, expert communicators and highly visible actions makers. None of these people except maybe SL seem to be present in Denton right now. Example, I met a rep from the Texas Legends who has communicated with me often over the past 10 days, got me out to a Texas Legends games and has me signed up for 2 networking events to get involved. Has anything ever moved that fast in Denton without a 66-7 drubbing and worst loss in college football embarrassment drumming before? It should be happening every single day to our completely lost thousands of alumni. I even have trouble encouraging my niece to attend UNT because she wants a cool college experience, which as an athlete includes connection to and involvement of athletics even from a spectator perspective. That's crazy and definitely a first in my 31 years of being a brand ambassador for this University.

MGB: UNT releases football schedule, thoughts

Army is going to feel like a pre-bowl game. Beat Army! Go Mean Green!!!!! -
The marketing of your program is something we have always been behind the times in. I too hope he considers a dedicated position along with the Spirit Czar to research what other programs are doing in regard to gameday experience - students, fans, tailgaters, campers. GMG

Wren has mentioned a 2017 Strategy which gives me great hope. Yes the details have not been unveiled to the public, but the fact Baker thinks strategically with long range goals, mile-markers and measurable outcomes in mind is great. I am also encouraged by the feel that Wren does no look at this turn around as a quick fix. Culture change takes time, energy and a slew of practices and rituals to bring about excellence. That is what makes what SL did even more impressive. He started building culture in the spring and helped get us to a bowl within one year. I don't need to see the people on the side of the road with box in hand to feel that things are changing. I am eager to see and learn about the strategic plan and confident a solid one is being built. We have the right guy and I am excited about the changes to come in 2017. GMG

To me it is just sad that Wren allowed him to coach and wreck this season and fanbase another year. Don't you think an assistant could have gotten 6 wins? I used to travel into town when living in far away places to watch football and would catch basketball games over the Christmas break. Now I live 45 minutes from the Superpit and haven't been to a game in years. It is sad that we have one spectator friendly sport that spans 5 months of a very long year to get excited about. I see that Dave Rice is now on the Nevada coaching staff former player and head coach of UNLV. He wrecked the Running Rebels much like Benford has in Denton. The longer they stayed the more damage they enacted. Even the Vegas fanbase is numb and turned off. Imagine the work ahead for this AD and next regime. Go Mean Green!!!!!

I agree with Harry on many fronts and several in this message. He didn't say to stop looking, only to give credit where it is completely due. The Sun Belt and CUSA are both having stellar bowl seasons. They are outclassing the AAC and MWC by playing smash-mouthed finesse football, and its working. I don't like the makeup of the AAC. I like the makeup of the MWC but would only want us to jump there with other Texas teams. I actually think Houston and SMU are at a disadvantage having only each other as Texas teammates. We absolutely are in a more favorable position in CUSA West. We have 3 Texas Rivals to their 1. I also don't like all the tiny private schools in their league. They don't get attendance or get me fired up even though they put out some solid programs, like Tulsa. Is the AAC perceived to be better, yes. Do I like its configuration, no. I like CUSA's configuration and MWC's TEAMS much better. Build the Program. Feed the Rivalries. Pound the Chest. Beat Army. Go Mean Green!!!!!

I have been watching WKU bowl games over the past few years and I must say I always love watching the Hilltoppers game. They are artistic on offense play solid D. They are pure football class in CUSA. Beat Army! GMG

I would love the city to promote the opportunity to celebrate first responders and show support for the Blue, Fire, Medics...In addition the charitable angle regarding supporting food banks I believe is one that got two tickets sold for me. The name truly reflects all that is great about the Heart of Dallas! GMG

We need to talk about the actual game
NM Green replied to NorthTexan95's topic in Mean Green Football
That sure was a cornerstone of our last visit to the HOD. Man watching the defense rise up and play out of its mind and shut down unlv was sweet. UNT caused some serious disruption in October and if they can do this again I like our chances. That game really was support across the board. Defense supported offense and when O had the ball they supported the D. It was nicely balanced which is how you beat discipline. Beat Army Go Mean Green!!!!! -
Shout out to my alma mater Bishop Lynch State Champions 2016! March Friars March down the field, March Friars march men of steel...Black and White and for Victory evermore! Now I want a bowl game win and a superbowl! It's wishing on a star season, right! GMG

How can UNT best capitalize on this bowl (important)
NM Green replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Make sure the alumni pre-game events are generation friendly. I loved the New Years Event at the Tower Club, but that was pricey. I enjoyed the battle of the bands at Fair Park but it overlapped with another event if I recall. The bbq dinner was fun. I liked it all but what about the students. They need a hyped up relevant experience for them and those of us young at heart. I think of the situation at Billy Bobs in Fort Worth a few years back when Aggie was playing in the Cotton Bowl. I went out to yell practice with a friend and then funneled into Billy Bobs with the masses to have fun the rest of the night. It was a mass gathering of Aggie fans all Johnny Football hyped up living it up. It was fun. Adler has mentioned this in the past. We need high energy rallies that don't cost a fortune set up in places diehards and casual fans will drop into. GMG -

NM Green replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
So much opportunity to enhance our pregame draw. Put them on the bud light hill for a 2 hour concert before the game and make them encourage fans to enter on time as part of their clause and high profile stage now you have a reason for people to hang in that otherwise dormant dead bud light area in front of the gates. Or do it burning man style and have a series of bands playing on a live stage four hours before kickoff. Every set 45 minutes 15 minute change. GMG -

Put up billboards a la la tech to get the casual fan and stress the human part of this bowl. The millennials love this stuff and if we can jimmy a way for them to bring their dog we sell that beach out! Kidding millenial friends. In all seriousness there will be attendees for the cause make it known, loud and visual. GMG -
I think HOD wants us and the free marketing we get at the Omni and reunion tower in smu's backyard will be sweet. Add in the tribute get an opponent who will bring fans and hang you have a winners. My hope is we draw 45k plus for this bowl visiting fans and us total. Great for charity and opportunity to play near major amounts of alumni who won't drive to Denton. GMG
