Facilities and momentum for the long term future.
flyonthewall replied to Stan R's topic in Mean Green Basketball
In response to plan, timeframe, etc. There is no official word on that yet. So what you do is you make a pledge. Say $1,000 a year for five years, and say that you will start paying once everything is off of the ground. This is the same way it worked for the football stadium. By doing this the athletic dept. can go to the president and say this is what we have pledged, and we can get going on this. I know it seems backwards but that is the way it works. One other thing, as I said earlier, and I 1,000 times agree, small contributors are just as important as larger ones. In mass we can do a lot of things. However, larger gifts pledged over say 5 years are "bondable", meaning that you sign a gift agreement for a major gift, and then the powers can be can either borrow from the university's line of credit, or as in the case of apogee, can sell bonds. It is much more difficult to do this with smaller gifts, not saying they are not important . I want baseball and I have already made a pledge, and qualified it that I will start paying it when I have completed my commitment to basketball. By this time there should be a plan and I can see what it is I am contributing to. As many people that will make a pledge to baseball before there is any definitave plans, the faster we will get baseball. so please just take a leap of faith like I did with the football stadium and now baseball and make a pledge, it will only make things easier. If anyone would like to talk about this in person, the chairman of the baseball fundraising committee sits just down the row from me in basketball. I will ask him Thursday if he would mind me posting his contact information. I am more than willing to talk about any of this in person, so you can P.M. me and I will give you my contact info. I am excited to see the interest in this. YOU CAN EAT AN ELEPHANT, YOU JUST HAVE TO DO IT ONE BITE AT A TIME!!!! David -
Facilities and momentum for the long term future.

Strategy for baseball. we need a stadium and team. the long term strategy (who will coach, what Will the stadium look like, etc.) is actively being planned. when i made my stadium pledge 5 years ago there was no set of plans. the strategy was we need a stadium. every gift is important, but the function of the mean green club is to fund scholarships for student athletes, not facilities. The fact of life is facilities are built with millions. my stadium pledge required me to also donate annually to the mean green club, i am pretty sure it is the same at club level. Please understand that i personally, forget the athletic department, appreciate everything every person on this board does for this university. complaining means that you are interested and you care. i am smart enough to know that just showing up at games is the best some people can do, and those people have the right to be just as passionate about north Texas as i am. The way our athletic department is setting things up is through networks. mean green club has mean green reps. major fundraising has committees. the story is better told by peers than by paid fundraisers from the athletic department. -

There is a committee. because we exceeded our goals for basketball, i would suggest a contribution to the baseball committee. i posted as a member of the committee back when the fund raising for this project was active and mark miller (kram1) was the only person to my knowledge that pledged. baseball is active now. -

Ok. you already can see the New daktronics floor level video board. i had tony post a picture of construction work last week at practice facility. and no one has told me this but it was real important to get a certain amount of money in by donors by the end of this year so we could put a down payment down to get the jumbotron ordered. so i am assuming it has been ordered.i will confirm and get back to you. -

You are just wrong about "as little as possible". Of the 3 million pledged for practice facility jumbotron etal i know for a fact over one million has been collected. the New floor level video board is already installed, and construction has begun on practice facility remodel. the jumbotron takes almost a year to make after order. a lot of this negatively right now is deserved, but to say that the bare minimum is being done is a slap in the face to the very small group of donors who without ANY help from through university made these projects happen. the lack of patience with some of you is amazing. -
The thing that I know about thieves is that they are thieves. Very few ever truly stop being thieves. Unfortunately these two happen to play football at the University of North Texas. Just because 2 out of approx. 125 kids in the football program did this does not mean that our program is bad, or that we are recruiting bad kids, or no one has control of said kids. There are still approx. 123 other kids in the football program that did not get arrested that day for stealing clothing at the golden triangle mall, and hundreds and hundreds more athletes that play golf, tennis, basketball, softball, run track etc. that did not get caught stealing at the golden triangle mall. To me this is not even newsworthy. Just two dumb college kids that got caught stealing.

did you look at the schedule??? I mean really. First six games at home against one of the easiest schedules I have ever seen. With the exception of Seton Hall, who have they played. We could very well be 6-0 with that schedule also, and we would know nothing about our team. Let's check back in with this after the Marquette game and see how he is doing. This is the same smoke and mirrors Johnny used while he was here. Don't get me wrong, I loved me some Johnny Jones, but we have played both Creighton and St. Louis on the road. They haven't even played a road game yet a month into the season. This comparison is just not fair.

We sell wood too! -
Don't think so. Tony wasn't eligible till after semester break, and the other two were in eligible when the second semester started.
-
So I was thinking and this is from memory. I can think of 4 games that the three of them played together last year. I believe it was Texas tech, Jackson state, Troy and lala. Lala beat us at home. And we had Brandon. This team is young, overhyped and has tremendous upside. Help me if I am wrong, because I am looking at a crown double in the st. Louis airport marriott after watching our guys fight their arses off in a hostile environment.

I agree with the above post. I thought we were going to win despite the more lopsided than usual home officiating. In the end they were calling touch fouls on us and they finally started making their free throws. When Laura McCoy fouls out and all of her fouls were called while guarding on the ball out on the perimeter, then you know it was just bad officiating. Number 22 is going to be an excellent player for us.

patton was in warmups no uniform. he did not play
-
Brandon broke his ankle and is having surgery some time this week. He is going to be out for two to three months.
-
Well now it is 5:30 and I am up. Oh well. Two and half hours to blast off.

The athletic dept. is not building the bridge. That is TEXdot. The athletic dept. is remodeling the practice facility. Not much really needs to be done.

Never in the history of North Texas Athletics has something so big been accomplished so quickly. Thank you to the two members of GMG.com who stepped up big on this campaign. You know who you are. Look for a press release from Mr. Capper soon. -

You are correct. I don't care. I don't care so much that I have been to every New Orleans Bowl. I don't care so much that my wife and I went on road shows with the development department to promote the stadium in different towns before plans had even been drawn. I could go on and but what is the point? The athletic department and the athletic director have not lied to me Lee Moses and by the way, my name is David Anderson. You can find my picture about 2/3 of the way throught the current north texan with my wife and a few others.
-
You are as much a part of the athletic department as anyone. It is our athletic department. Nobody is lying to anyone. Our A.D. (not sure if you mean A.D. as in athletic director or A.D. in athletic department) is just trying to give our kids the best tools with what they have. I am quite sure I could call up there and go watch a practice if I wanted to. Why are you so concerned about an A.D lying? I am more concerned that our coaches are doing their best to get our kids prepared for that mountain they have to climb that starts in Baton Rouge. Maybe I am just different but when I decided to donate money I didn't even see one of those charts. It was based on many other factors. Tax planning, needs of the university at the time, etc. Not on going to practice. I have been out there preaching and trying to convince others to donate to this program. Let me tell you, it is tough. To get us where we need to go, the general mentality of alums needs to change. At other schools with a 300 mile radius here there are people who send in a check, then buy groceries.

I am a 1000++++ donor and I don't give a rats butt about going to any practices. I don't care about the cheesy gifts that I get from the MGClub. What I do care about is looking at an athletic center that I donated money to help build. It makes me smile. I care about a stadium that I donated money to help build. That makes me smile too. I care about the fact that my money is going to fund scholarships and give young men and women opportunities to get an education that they otherwise might not be able to afford. That makes me smile, that is all I need. You really think that six figure gifts are coming in because of being invited to practice. NO NO NO. What those gifts are about are giving our coaches and kids the best tools that they can have to succeed at what they do, all the while making this place as good as any in the country when it comes to facilities. This includes game day facilities, practice facilities, and academic tools to make sure that the 99% of kids that play here that will not play professionally will complete their education. I will admit that the numbered parking spot at Apogee is pretty cool. If McCarney says to close practice, then close practice. He makes his living coaching, not me.

Ok, so according to data on this site, there has been over 2000 views to this thread. Two people have contacted me about contributing to this fund. One is a current student who I will recommend that he does not contribute because he is already paying the athletic fee. I believe that the contribution is 100% deductable if you are already a mean green club member as there are no benefits except pride that you helped get this thing done. If we want to go places we all need to take ownership of this program. HELP HELP HELP PM me. David
