State fan reports Sun Belt will offer La. Tech & Texas State
foutsrouts replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Does this mean that we might have the opportunity to blackball smu down the road? Now that would be fun! -
Would you prefer Texas State, UTSA, Both or Neither?
foutsrouts replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Southwest Texas State was D2 until close to the mid-80's, and they had success at that level in the early 80's with two national championships under Jim Wacker. We were D1A until close to the mid-80's, and had experienced quite a bit of success at the highest level of football for several decades. For some reason that success tended to be in the second half of decades, but you can look that up and see this for yourself. Strangely enough, we dropped DOWN to D1AA around the same time that Southwest Texas moved UP to D1AA. As far as dominating D1AA competition is concerned, I wouldn't say we dominated, but we were generally good to very good at that level. Southwest Texas not so much. We very likely wouldn't even be having this conversation if our administration would have "manned up" and made every effort to keep us at the highest level of football. It's all water under the bridge now, but LALA and others managed to pull off staying at the highest level, and so should have we. In all honesty, I guess many of us who remember those days still feel a touch of bitterness, and feel that we somehow deserve a chance to be in the conversation with some of the "name teams" of college football. That's not necessarily a slight on the two up and coming Hill Country area schools, but I guess it comes with playing the game for a hundred years with much of that at (or close to) the highest level. . -

But we're currently in the process of trying to climb out of those depths of football despair. I think the timing is such that we need to give ourselves one more solid chance at separation, because if we start accepting this pattern now, there will likely be more Southland teams to follow. -

Yes. Embracing newbies to the scene simply because of proximity isn't a great idea at this point IMO. OOC fine, becoming joined at the hip, NO! -
We've got it. We've got the tiebreaker on USA.
-
I really wish we could make it a two and two with you guys coming here again this year, and us doing the double turnaround ASAP. We need another OOC home game this year in a bad way, and we should be scheduling each other as much as possible anyway. No reason not to work on an intrastate rivalry between us.

Wishing for Spring Football to Hurry Up
foutsrouts replied to Voice of Reason's topic in Mean Green Football
Some guys were rebels in high school and don't grow up until they're closing in on 20, and some guys have family and environmental situations that make it very difficult to play organized football. Plenty of guys slip through the cracks for one reason or another. Probably not NEARLY as many as slipped through the cracks a generation ago, but still quite a few. On the other hand, this could be the alias Elvert playing more of his fun little off season games. -

They're only freaking huge if you're freaking small, and if you know anything at all about football, I doubt you would be pushing to be a TE if you're WR/DB/RB size. I wouldn't even think about TE unless you're quite a bit over an in-shape six feet two twenty with excellent hands and speed, because they won't even give you a look without the background. You can be a little smaller as an OLB, but not much if you don't have a boatload of speed and intangibles. If you've got the basic size/speed/strength qualifications, and you keep yourself in damn good shape, then I say go for it. You'll regret it later on if you don't get up your nerve and give it your best shot before your eligibility is history. There's always A&M Commerce or Sul Ross if you don't fit the D1 mold. Hell, they're known to play 60 year olds out there in Alpine. BOL. -
Sounds nasty, but I'll be there!

Yes, but just like about everything pleasurable other than making babies (or not) with your faithful woman, moderation is the key. -

As they did when they lowered the BAC from .10 to .08 (with more to come), and when they outlawed all open containers. Not that I'm saying these are bad laws, but when the feds can force their will on everyone with the threat of diminished highway funds, it does seem to trample on a little thing called states rights. Is this thread still on topic? -

Smokers old enough to remember the 60's and 70's, would probably tell you that buzz vs. stoned depends on the potency of the weed, and that the potency of the weed these days will generally knock your socks off compared to the weed of the olden days. So I'm not so sure that just getting a mild buzz these days is very practical, unless of course you're a rare person who seeks out the weak stuff. -

Not so sure that it would be like the UH game, since the Coogs don't generally travel any better than we do, but I feel confident that we would be in the majority. If we could dump the LSU trip and manuever the schedule around to where we hosted FSU for that 1/8/12 game that WVU cancelled on them, I'd be very happy. Not likely to happen at this point but why not dream. -
A WAC/Belt combo would likely be more entry level, and definitely be more widespread, than any conference that we've ever been affiliated with. It could become a huge gigantic thing, since most of the potential up and comers are much more in its footprint than the MAC's. That conference could really get ugly, and could very well set up its members for future "1AAdom." Don't forget to say your prayers tonight.

At Duncanville, his teams were good largely because of him. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he improves his handle and jumper in the off season, and comes out next year looking more like a 2 guard. He's a hard worker, and he likely knows that if he's gonna have a shot to play for pay, that he's going to have to develop his outside skills. He's being asked to do a lot this year playing mainly as an inside guy at his height.
-
I don't have Franklin's HS stats in front of me, but when was he just a decent contributor at Duncanville? When he was Freshman of the Year for the entire State of Texas?

Guess we gotta make the tourney final to get to another 20 winner. No problemo. Just hope we can rest our walking wounded a bit, cuz we're gonna need 'em in the big boy tourney after we win Hot Springs.

I would venture to guess that the number is close to zero as far as pot is concerned, since pot SMOKERS haven't been going to prison around here for the past 40 years or so, and not too many people who aren't dealing get nabbed with felony amounts. I guess growers for personal use could be the exception, since unless it has changed in recent years, growing any amount is a felony. -
If he did, then I say double whatever's currently on the table.

Home with OU would certainly beat LSU on the road. I sure hope 2012 isn't yet etched in stone, because that schedule is as bad as we've had in a long time. -
