Best College Football Stadium.... Besides Apogee
foutsrouts replied to mgfan's topic in Mean Green Football
I've been to all D-1 in Texas at one time or another (some pre-remodel), and other than Apogee I'll have to go with McLane. I was in Waco yesterday and got a second up close look at it after seeing the punies get crushed there last year. The river really is a nice touch. As far as stadiums I have personally attended nationally, I guess it depends on if we're talking structures exclusively or overall environment. Hard to beat LSU's for that monstrous college football stadium environment, and even though it's not particularly big or fancy, I really enjoyed Folsom Field in Boulder a couple of years ago. Gotta love that fall mountain air. -
Yep. Patterson has worked miracles there no doubt. They were pretty much SWC doormats since the days of Bob Lilly in the late 50's.

Those of us born before the 70's remember when all public universities in Texas were all about education for the masses, but UT made academic strides while A&M became a school for people other than "kinda strange guys." Without the big bucks upward mobility can be very difficult, which is why serious success in athletics could be so important to a university such as ours. If you can't make it with money you've got to make it with headlines, which is why I've never quite understood the indifference at the top toward athletics in Denton. Time for those at the top to finally wise up to that thought in a big way IMHO.

I think we'll end up somewhere between 1st and 6th. Too many question marks for me to say otherwise with any kind of certainty. If we don't go well beyond basic bus driving it's not looking good. If we do, the sky's the limit. At least as far as the conference is concerned of course.

That first week bye is looking better all the time for just that purpose.

C-USA Attendance (What should our goal be?)
foutsrouts replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
My goal would obviously be a sellout or close to it, but I guess that's a little unrealistic without 10 game winning seasons plus an occasional "body bag" type win. Realistically I would say that we should average 25k with the right promotions. Hell, it seems like we only have to promote for 5 Saturdays a year these days, so why can't a solid 25k be doable? The Incarnate Words of the world probably won't do much to prop up that average though. -
Gary Patterson Foundation fundraiser at Joe T's
foutsrouts replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
I have a cousin who was formerly on the city council for several years, and he and his family have always been strong supporters of NT athletics. I saw some of them at a family reunion the other day, and they did say that they haven't really been much into NT basketball since JJ left, but I don't think that's exactly breaking news where most are concerned. I do feel though that the overall support from the city and population in general has always been weak at best. It sure would be nice if we could figure out a way to mobilize that large and ever growing citizenry of Denton County. I know that if I lived in or around Denton and had no affiliation to the university, that I would at least catch some weekday basketball games just to see some basketball, but maybe that's just me. -
Of course a lot of that thought will depend on the performance of our basically new offensive line. From what I've seen over these last few years, if AM spends a lot of time running for his life, our passing game beyond dink and dunk could be in deep trouble. On the other hand, I'm pretty optimistic that our OL will come together with a little experience on the field working as a unit. There's a lot of talent and pretty good size there. Depth is looking up also.

Not likely when he directs Mini-Mac to hand it off to the catcher. Wish I had known it was UNT night myself, especially since I spent the evening within a couple of miles of the stadium.
-
I'm thinking that our back 7 will be surprisingly good and overlooked with so few starters returning. There is a lot of talent there. It should be a competitive August/September.

So we can pat RV on the back for that one?

If McNulty makes the grade will you step down?
foutsrouts replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah, it's probably time to bite our bashing tongues until he proves that he's bash worthy on the field. Pleasant surprises do happen. -
Your Favorite Coach Since Fry?
foutsrouts replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
Where's that Matt Tiemer video clip hiding these days (LOL)? I'll have to go with Corky too. I always thought we had a decent shot at winning no matter who we were playing. Mac will move up my list if we win half or more of our games this year and the QB situation doesn't turn into a bad joke. -

I'd love to go to the Tennessee game. I have relatives near there, and it's beautiful in that area that time of year even though it'll be getting pretty late in the fall. Certainly smu, almost certainly LaTech, and we'll see about S. Miss later. Iowa would be an interesting drive straight north as well. I'm not usually one to plan distant road trips too far in advance, so I'll know more by September.

Other than our actual performance on the court, the saddest part of it all is that we're lucky to get a couple hundred of our 35,000 plus season ticket holders to show for the average game, and most of them live on or near campus.
-
I'd like to dream of these scenarios myself, but we must show in advance that we can put butts in the seats to even be considered IMO, and that includes a major improvement in our absolutely pathetic basketball attendance. The only recent positive in regard to attendance is what we showed at the Dallas Bowl a year and a half ago. Of course it wouldn't hurt if a large bundle of money fell from the sky along with a freakin' baseball team. As usual, the only answer is to win baby win.

Impressive numbers. Glad he chose us, and he will still be getting to know the smu and Army players up close and personal before he leaves here.

Rob Evans offer perspective on Confederate flag
foutsrouts replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
That kind of stuff would obviously be going WAY too far. If we're going to do things like that, we should replace the US flag, as it not only stood over slavery AND the importation of slaves, but it also stood over the near extermination of Native Americans well after the abolition of slavery. The PC police seem to ignore those facts. -
Probably depends on whether you're an employee or an employer. Personally, I just want to marry my dad. He worked at an old school corporation for many years with great benefits, and we do kinda love each other. Should we both find ourselves unmarried down the road, I think we should have that right . As long as the government doesn't mandate sex with marriage of course.

Rob Evans offer perspective on Confederate flag
foutsrouts replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
We're getting to the point in our history where only a relatively small number of people really knew/knows anybody that EVEN KNEW anybody who was around during the Civil War. I knew my very lucid great grandmother very well when I was a kid up until her dying age of 103 (born 1876 in Mississippi), so I guess I'm one of those who actually heard stories from around that era up close and personal. I realize that there's still some Civil War bitterness floating around in some white families from the "Old South" to this day, but it's just time for them to let it go. Nothing wrong with regional pride, but it's time to move on and remove the flag from anything that's state sponsored IMO. While it certainly should not be forgotten, it's just time to put some of that history to bed. -
Newman gives athletic director Vic Trilli another five-year deal

Scared me for a minute. Thought I was in some kind of a time warp and Tommy Newman somehow hired Trilli as our AD for the next 5 years.- 4 replies

We had a nice crowd for that game, and I'm not against playing them or Texas at all. The cost/benefit ratio favors us big time. If we lose, nobody bats an eye, but if we win.....
