  1. If Sturns can get it together, it might be interesting to see him and Flemings on the court at the same time in '07/'08. A couple of exceptional athletes.
  2. Wade does look to me to have a "little" Jordan in him, but the Mavs got burned big-time when a driving Wade stuck his right forearm in Dirk's gut and DIRK got called for the foul! Worst call at the most crucial moment. Oh well, it shouldn't of been that close in the first place. I like Johnson, but why the "do no wrong" Avery didn't send Nowitzki to the hole on every other play in the 4th is beyond me. He CAN make the free throws.
  3. Mistake #2, not joining the WAC.
  4. Green Margaritas go great with breakfast. I'm vacationing and did them this morning! Btw, 11:00 AM is OK with me. Nice and cool tailgating for that time of year. I'll be there, and it'll be here before ya know it! Time to finally pull off some major upset butt kicking kind of stuff! It's about time, and sometimes these things come at the most unexpected times! Go Green!!!!!!!!!! Remember '88!!!
  5. Seems like we've got Yugos, Pintos, and Gremlins snapping at our heels on a regular basis now. If we turn down another opportunity to get them off of our heels, I think me might as well join them again. LET'S BEG TO GO WACKY!!!!!!!!
  6. Hope we don't lose him. At the very least, I enjoy him on the Mean Green Network. Btw, why do newcomer little schools like Corpus, Dallas Baptist, and even larger new schools like South Florida, Central Florida, and UAB seem to have no problem moving up in athletic stature? For some reason I'm wondering why an excellent academic university which is one hundred and sixteen years old, is located in a 5-6 million person hotbed of athletic talent, and will soon be the third largest university in the Great State of Texas cannot seem to breakout of athletic mediocrity! Funny, then again maybe not so funny. Good weekend to all!
  7. Our name change happened EIGHTEEN years ago. 1988.
  8. I agree that we SHOULD have gone to the WAC a couple of years ago. Rumors were very strong that it was ours for the taking. We chose not to. I'm not sure that opportunity still exists today. As for Conference USA, SMU did their usual cowardly "buck tossing" to make sure that we wouldn't be accepted into that conference two years ago. We do travel all over the place in the SBC, but there are closer teams in the Belt than Denver. Just in football, Arky State, LA-Monroe, LA-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, and even Troy are all closer than Denver. In the WAC, we would have LA Tech as our closest rival with New Mexico State being around 700 miles away. The rest of them are all a pretty good cruise down the road. I think it was (is) very short-sighted for us to not at least attempt to join the WAC in football only and find a way to play the other sports in a different conference or as an independent. LA-Monroe has been an SBC football only member for the past several years, and I don't see why we couldn't find a way to do something similar with the WAC. The WAC travel costs in football only vs. the SBC would be negligible in my opinion. The WAC is clearly a much more prestigious conference and the top half of that conference is pretty much solid Mountain West type material. The bottom half of the WAC is basically made up of SBC refugees. Some people forget that we were conference mates a few years ago with Nevada and Boise State. Those two have nationally recognized athletic programs these days. Again, I think it is very ignorant to stand pat when and if we have a chance to move up in stature. This is coming from a guy who has been around the program since the late seventies and has seen one opportunity after another slip away. I know that it's easier said than done, but it's time for the powers that be to start thinking big instead of little. If we were in the WAC, other people around the country (and around here) would look at us in a much more favorable light. On a different note, baseball would be an easy and relatively inexpensive way to get things started in the right direction. I cannot believe that we continue to have no program when we are sitting in one of the most talented high school baseball regions in the country. Sure there has been plenty of talk, but WHEN will it finally come to fruition? Pardon my rambling, but I have a few minutes to burn before the woman gets home and couldn't resist throwing in my couple of pennies. Good weekend to all!
  9. Probably left for a more respected conference affiliation.
  10. Why don't we expand by letting in Dallas Baptist? Oh that's right, EVEN THEY are on the verge of getting into Conference USA. Although they are still considering the dreaded WAC, they would never even consider hooking up with our great conference.
  11. That's right. He had to go back and play a year of JC ball down in San Marcos didn't he. Almost forgot about that. Thanks for the heads up!
  12. "Romoncing the Stoned". Funny movie. Bet someone decides for him that an enemy broke his window and planted the backpack. Five pounds ain't exactly personal use chickenfeed.
  13. Good for him, but I was hoping that he would get a shot with the Texans.
  14. Booger was and still may be an incredible impact player. Personally, I'm convinced that he would have made it at the next level if his weight would have been closer to 300. Only the bionic man can put that kind of stress on his legs and come through uninjured. Maybe he can get healthy and make another run at it. As far as Cobbs is concerned, I think he'll get his chance. I just hope that it's in the NFL.
  15. I'll repeat my previous comment on the Texan's management. They are clearly mentally ill! This is coming from a native Houstonian who grew up an Oiler and a Cowboys fan. I haven't gotten into the Texan's yet, and because of this blunder, I doubt that I will anytime soon. Shear stupidity from any viewpoint.
  16. Not only was not one SBC player selected, but we were the only 1A conference and possibly the only Division 1 (1A & 1AA) conference without a player selected. Most 1AA conferences seemed to have a player selected. I do differ on the outlook for next year. If we can get the right QB in there, I think that the offense will be MUCH improved, and I also believe that the D will show much greater "stopping ability" with the 3-4 and the extra year of overall experience. We shall see in four months!
  17. Noticed that the SBC was the only 1A conference with no player drafted, but was wondering if anyone noticed how many 1AA conferences had no one drafted either. Not very many based on the spot in the DMN. Kind of a sad statement about the SBC when the Southland and SWAC had two each and the Lone Star had one.
  18. When you have NFL draft prospects coming out of Abilene Christian and Tarleton State it kind of makes you wonder what we've been doing wrong. No offense to those schools, but we need to go out and find some of those guys! Bring on the West Texans!
  19. I think that the Texan's management is clearly mentally ill. There is NO WAY that you pass up on Bush. Building a defense around one player is a lot more difficult than it is on offense. They also really screwed things up public relations wise. The "take it all the way" possibilities involved when Bush touches the ball 30 times per game are incredible. Great hands, great feet, great football player. HUGE mistake! BTW, if Bush is too "small" , then so are 75+% of the great modern era running backs. Five eleven 200-210 is the prototype great NFL running back, and don't forget the legitimate 4.3 speed. My favorite senior won't be drafted because his 40 performance for the scouts was not exactly steller, but then again Emmit Smith wasn't exactly a sprinter either. Hope PC gets a good FA shot with the Texans. They definitely need a darkhorse to step up after this debacle.
  20. We have GOT to get baseball going. We go WAY too many months without athletic visibility. We are sitting in a hotbed of baseball talent, and if we were lucky enough to be successful in a short period of time, it could really contribute to the overall success of our athletic program. College baseball seems to gradually be turning into less of a "back burner" sport every year. Twenty years ago college crowds were miniscule everywhere in the state other than UT-Austin. That has changed dramatically.
  21. She would go absolutely nuts with three periods. Mine has enough trouble with one!
  22. Since when is the Lone Star Conference (West Texas/Div. 2) a non-scholarship conference? Also, we (and others) dropped to 1AA not 1A.
  23. Do you have to be 1A to have your own message board or do you just like posting here?
  24. That's what happens when a MeanGreen LB knocks the **** out of ya!
  25. For the sake of argument, a WAC football and back to the Southland in all other sports would be an interesting option. In the Sunbelt, we seem to be inept in almost all sports other than football {excepting '05), soccer, and occasionally golf. The "sleeping giant" school in Denton is really just not competing! It's pretty obvious that football is THE major prestige sport as far as overall national perception is concerned. The WAC may be a top heavy conference, but to me, it's pretty obvious that the football WAC is a full notch above the Sunbelt in national perception as well as in overall talent. Not to belittle the old MVC, but I think that a WAC football affiliation would be the best conference affiliation in our school's history. I'll list my positives and negatives of such a move, and please feel free to do likewise. Positives: 1. The WAC would give us a better football conference with MUCH more national prestige. Conference USA would definitely be preferable, but I think that SMU will find a way to keep us out for years to come. They don't want us to be on equal footing with them athletically, and they have the money and influence to make it very difficult for us. Do payoffs happen these days? Look at past history and decide for yourself! We could use the WAC as a stepping stone. I think that our chances of joining an expanded Mountain West down the road may be more likely than USA. 2. As far as football recruiting is concerned, a game or two in beautiful Hawaii would be very enticing. A more historically established conference like the WAC wouldn't hurt much either. 3. In other sports, I think that we would immediately become a powerhouse in the Southland. The NCAA automatic berth in Southland basketball wouldn't be the pain that it is now in the Sunbelt. 4. As far as travel costs and regional rivalries are concerned, a WAC/Southland affiliation would be much more preferable to me. In WAC football, we would still have only one (LA Tech) reasonable day trip. Currently, LA-Monroe is really the only Sunbelt football team within easy day trip driving distance. As far as other sports are concerned, the Southland has roughly a half dozen schools within day trip driving distance of Denton. This is especially important since we HOPEFULLY will have baseball up and running in a couple of years. Negatives: 1. The Southland in non-football sports is a step down from the Sunbelt. Maybe. But conference championships and regional rivalries could more than make up for that. 2. The WAC in football requires more travel. Maybe a bit. But we're only talking about four games a year. 3. The WAC may break up and go away. Who knows? The same could be said for the fragile Sunbelt. 4. Recruiting in non-football sports. We might lose a bit because the Southland may be perceived as inferior to the Sunbelt. Possibly. But that may be more than covered by our membership in a superior football conference. The WAC may not be the best in the world, but we somehow need to get on the national map. Nothing else has worked thus far.
