Cronkite isn't a native born Texan, but he did attend Lanier Junior High (as I did) and graduated from San Jacinto High in Houston. A whole lot more Texan than W. Bush. Great to see Mr. Young and our school get some well deserved prime time national pub.

Its Official We Are Playing #2 Memphis
foutsrouts replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Basketball
My first thoughts were UhOh, were playing a team with some serious athletes who ran through their CUSA schedule and is also a team that is fairly similar to us. Then on second thought, I decided that this could be a pretty good matchup. If we hit our "threes" and take care of our "frees" going down the stretch, we could make this a game. I heard them play the Cougars on the radio Saturday afternoon, and Houston sounded like they could have pulled that game out. I've seen Houston play a couple of times this year and I think we are definitely in their league. I hope a couple of our guys, which I will not name, are locked in the gym as I type and will not leave until they have hit a few dozen free throws in a row. N.O. and Louisiana in general are certainly becoming familiar turf for us and I hope to make this game. LET'S DO IT GREEN!!!!!!!! -
I guess Calvin Murphy has lost a little of his pull. At least we cleared that first hurdle!

The Super Pit and Hoffeinz Pavillion were the two best basketball venues in the state for several years back in the early seventies. Most of the current Big 12 teams played in barns. The opening of the Summit in '75 for the Rockets was the first big-time arena in the state. I was their for the opening and actually saw Elvis, McCartney and Wings, Zeppelin, The Who, ZZ and a whole lot of other bands and sporting events there back in those early days. Pretty amazing how far the arena situation has progessed in Texas over the past quarter of a century.

What Play Will Dodge Open With Against The Sooners?
foutsrouts replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
Either heads or tails. -
We're going to need some tough smoothering defense out of Sturns and Stewart tonight more than ever to slow down Banks and Wells. We're facing a tough veteran team tonight and those matchups could be key. Whether we have Davis back or not, personnel decisions by JJ are going to be very important. Best of luck guys!!!

Here's the highly ranked Texas A&M schedule. Seems to me they played a few "Bellhaven's and Jarvis Christian's" themselves before their Big 12 schedule. 11/1 Midwestern State X W 79-54 11/3 Lithuanian Academy X W 113-74 11/10 Prairie View A&M W 81-49 11/17 Lamar Shelby Metcalf Classic W 94-60 11/18 Louisiana Tech Shelby Metcalf Classic W 75-59 11/19 Saint Louis Shelby Metcalf Classic W 69-33 11/25 Idaho State W 74-44 11/27 Arkansas-Little Rock W 75-35 12/2 Pacific W 74-62 12/5 @ LSU (9) L 52-64 12/9 vs UCLA (1) John R. 40 Minutes Left Before Dancing

No guarantee at all that we will "get killed" WHEN we get into the tourney. The fact is that we only have been "killed" this season in the first 10 minutes of the Nebraska game and also overall by Arky State in the first game. We have shown that we "potentially" have enough talent to play with VERY good basketball teams, and we won't know how good we are until we are actually matched against a 15th/14th seeded team in the BIG tourney. I just hope we get the opportunity. -

Take a look at top ten Texas ATM's early schedule. They played ALL kinds of teams that wouldn't have a prayer in the SBC. Some people are just blind to the facts. We aren't the only D1 team that plays a couple of patsies. Everyone does! -
What was the crowd like? Sounded like we had a few MeanGreeners there. Great games by Bell, Watson, Williams, and of course Stewart to make up for the other off games.
-
I think he was BS'ing a bit. Great win with horrible numbers from a couple of our mainstays. I caught the game out on the highway and I haven't seen the box yet, but I know that Harold Stewart had a great game again today. I really have the gut feeling that we're gonna take it past Tuesday for the first time since '88. Nice comeback when it sounded kind of dire at the half. I can't make it tomorrow, but my brother and I are definitely planning on hitting the road from Houston on Tuesday for the big VICTORY DANCE!
-
At least we get a week off to soothe our hangovers after the SMU victory.
-
We didn't get there until halftime and there's no way there were close to 3k in attendance. Pretty sad, but GREAT GAME!
-
I don't get it either. Three different groups of students asked us who won as we were leaving the game. What's the deal? How could anyone, athletic or not, not enjoy watching THEIR UNIVERSITY's involvement in a good conference tournament basketball game? Go figure.
-
That was pretty incredible. I had a pretty good angle on his shots, and he didn't look like he had the length to make it happen on the first couple of mid-courters. Then he wooshed it at the buzzer! Beautiful!! Hopefully a good omen for the rest of the season!!
-
Yeah, that dude is a special talent in so many ways. If he could just actually finish a few more of those slicing drives to the hole he would seriously quiet most of his detractors. Great breakout job by Davis, and I've been waiting for the very talented Harold Stewart to make his appearance all season. Definitely the best overall performance of the year by the entire team. Let's do it!
-
We will be there, but probably can't make it before eight. I hope that more than 2K agree with me that our games are exciting to say the least. I suspect that LaLa will be ready for us.
-
That's kind of sad. I thought the men might do better than that. Davis has been a little disappointing following his SICSA (self inflicted career suicide attempt), and the big men started out slow, but I still thought we would do better than one third teamer. We certainly have the talent to receive more accolades than that. Let's hope that the talent shows up big-time starting MANANA!

Nt To Play Ull For Round 1 Of Tourney
foutsrouts replied to UNTFan23's topic in Mean Green Basketball
No chance. None of our opponents at home could possibly outdraw Grant Teaff's alma mater McMurry College. -
I agree. JJ's always a little short on big men.

Brees is closer to 5'11", Dodge still has time to grow, and I don't have time to list all of the sub-6' QB's that have started for major D-1A programs over the last ten years. Not many 150 pounders, but plenty under 6'. The ones listed at 5'11" are usually closer to 5'10" and the ones listed at 6' are usually closer to 5'11". Some even exaggerate a tad more. Besides, didn't Riley just grow two inches and put on 30+ lbs over the last few weeks?

S. Bama certainly is not a shoe in, but they only have to get by the Troy/MUTS winner to POTENTIALLY face us in the semis. I don't think the Fla teams figure in. Personally, I hope we are able to play the Troy/MUTS winner. You're definitely right that this thing is wide open. Probably the most wide open conference tourney that I've ever seen.
