It is REALLY difficult to not agree that this program is a mess. I mean, I've been following NT since I was a kid iduring the HF era and I have NEVER seen such ineptitude here. Rice could have easily hung 120 on us and blown away the U of H vs. Tulsa blowout record 40 or so years ago. In the past, we always pretty much held up our Mean Green reputation no matter how good or bad we were. Not anymore. Very depressing, and I'm still going to throw some blame at TD's arrogance for throwing a high school coaching staff into the D1 fire. That being said, I'm not giving up on the guy this year even if we go 0-12. As far as I'm concerned, he has until this time next year before I start screaming for his head, but he sure as hell better start making some adjustments before everyone gives up on this program! Pretty depressing day to say the least. Maybe this loss actually makes a statement FOR the need for a new stadium? Then again, we should have played better today even if our home field was a Safeway parking lot.

The national spokesperson for Pepto Bismol?

Nice rundown, and it does seem that the two teams have quite a few similarities. I would disagree with the characterization of your '88 loss to us as a disaster. 1AA or not, I was there and we were the better team. If Texas and TT would speak honestly about our team that year they would undoubtedly concur.

Yeah, we really need this game bad. I was there when we whipped them in Rice Stadium back in the 1AA days, and they acted like angry little children when we whipped them. Let's do it to them again. I think we have a reasonable chance if someone will step up and coach the special teams. Of course our DB's better be up to the task also.

I agree that this is a huge game which could set the tone for the rest of the season. I think we finally get over our fear of the endzone and pull out a close game. NT 41 Rice 35

Where Is The Special Teams Coverage?
foutsrouts replied to Will to Win's topic in Mean Green Football
I guess that means we need to start competing against "1AA" teams for recruits, or we need to start competing against "1AA" teams for special teams coaches instead of getting our coaches straight out of high school. I wonder which direction we should go? -
Uh, UNLV is 2-1 and just beat number 15 Arizona State on Saturday. I don't think we want any part of them at this point.

Just curious, what does Ford do? I kind of think of TD as the OC, so I guess I think of Ford as the assistant to the OC. I honestly don't know the details of what he does so I'm not really criticizing him, but it sounds like a creampuff job which doesn't require a whole lot of creativity or accountability. Anyone know personally?

For Mean Green Naysayers, As Jessica Simpson Would
foutsrouts replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
I was skeptical, but I really do think we have a 50/50 chance of beating Rice after last night's game. We showed improvement just about everywhere but special teams. I mean, we are talking about Rice. I hope we can get a nice green clad crowd to show up. -
It worked out just fine as far as salary and girlfriends (maybe) are concerned, but I seem to remember something about a botched hold and an errant pass on the last play of the last two seasons. Oh well, we shall see.

Yeah, I was hoping that he would go the way of Mendoza after last year's performance. For whatever reason, he happens to coach our two weakest areas. Yet again another SLC loyalty hire that I disagreed with. The areas that he does not coach really don't look too terrible tonight. Some positive signs.

Hope it doesn't rain too much in Baton Rouge. We're considering doing a reverse evacuation and leaving the Houston area tomorrow for Louisiana. It would be nice if they would give complimentary tickets to all Texans for our hurricane hospitality, but I don't have my fingers crossed. I may have to settle for a couple of Hurricanes in the tailgating area.

I don't know why I'm even responding to that statement because I consider it ridiculous (no offense intended), but I do not think that Riley's size will prevent him from playing QB at this level. There are too many examples to mention, but Vizza is not exactly a giant, and neither is that kid who starts down in Austin. I guess we will have that question answered eventually.

We go the 1AA route too heavily, and people will find it even easier to equate us with that competition. ESPECIALLY, if we lose. As soon as we find some REAL traction in the "mid-major" 1A world, I would have no problem with an occasional 1AA. But for now, I say we start with an Abilene Christian/A&M Commerce (hopefully) tuneup game to try and build our confidence, and then continue with the same old 1A regional and money game type schedules. We obviously need the bucks, and maybe we'll finally get to the point where we can beat the Tulsa's of the world. At this point in the game, I sure as hell don't want to bring any quality 1AA teams to Denton that can beat us.

Hope Horton had the same summer school professor. Our DE performance has been seriously lacking to say the least.

I'll be there rain or shine. Was planning on spending a long weekend on Lake Conroe anyway. I've always enjoyed games at Rice Stadium even though they're usually 80-90 percent empty. Still unsure about our defensive potential, but if we can't get our offense cooking well enough to score some serious points against Rice by then, we could be in some serious SBC trouble.

Ike Gustav 2 LSU 0

I'll be absolutely shocked if we don't enter SBC play 0-4. Rice is pretty damned good. Btw, what the hell happened to our offense that we had vs. Navy last year? Does the lack of Brandon Jackson and a couple of other contributors on offense really make that much difference? I'm hoping that we are ready to explode and at least be as good as last year on offense, but I really don't see that happening anytime soon.
-
Yeah, I'm pretty upset also and don't even want to think of the destruction that is facing us vs. LSU. For those of us who have been following the program for roughly a quarter of a century or more, this is REALLY starting to get old. We have become ingrained as losers for many DECADES now, and it just keeps coming and coming year after year. Well, after saying that crappola, I still haven't given up on Dodge. If this is still going on by this time next year I think I will finally be burned out and throw in the towel. Not just on Dodge, but maybe the program as a whole. We have got to be just about the worst football program in the country when you consider things like our lack of OOC upsets, our lack of conference upgrade progress, our lack of stadium/fan support progress, and our abundance of unharvested potential. Oh hell, I'm basically just pissed and will probably never give up. GO MEAN GREEN! BEAT LSU!!! (cough, cough)

Any relation to the old longtime Houston news anchor Dick John?

TV's gonna hurt. I'll be there, but even I am tempted to enjoy it in front of my 73 inch Mitsubishi. Hope you guys are right about the 25k.

Do we have a scholarship left? If we do, based on our offense yesterday, he could be our best signing in history.

I would love to go to Kansas for the game (I actually just got back from there), but I have to go down to the Houston area tomorrow. Does anyone know for sure if the game will be broadcast on the Conroe station? I have kind of been getting mixed signals on that issue, and I don't think I'll have access to the internet until later in the evening. Thanks.
