I don't recognize that team at all. Sure not a team from Denton, Texas. I think our team will be better than that one next year.
-
I don't anticipate the main theme of this thread to occur, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility. He was the main man on the sideline there for part of a season, and I don't think that they thought too badly of him. I'll hold my breath, shut my mouth, and hope that it doesn't happen.

I agree. I like the look of our lines on both sides of the ball this year. My question is, will our younger linebackers and our corners finally reach their potential this year? If they do, this defense could be surprisingly good. As far as offense is concerned, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how well Riley and his receivers can hook up. I like the look of the RB's and the OL. I'm not even going to mention special teams since they couldn't even compete with Denton High School's the last couple of years. We shall see.

I agree, but I sure wish that point guard we sign would be a freshman who could grow up with Holmen instead of signing another 2 year man. Unfortunately, that freshman would have to be VERY special to come in and get significant playing time right off the bat. I guess we might have to just make out with Dom at the point again next year. He really did show improvement in the last quarter of the year, but it sure would be nice if we had some bigger guys out there defensively. Somebody please wave a magic wand and turn Josh into a one guard. That would solve all of our problems, because other than that nagging PG situation, I think we're set up to be a VERY good team next year.

I agree. I'm not a particularly small guy myself, so I'm not coming from that direction, but if a guy has reasonable size he should not be "belittled" about his potential. Many an "undersized" guy has had great success in both college and the NFL. I could type all night about all of the NFL and D1 stars who were "too small." If Riley truly weighs close to 195 which has recently been advertised, then I really don't think that he is too small to start at QB for the University of North Texas. This ain't the NFL, so height really isn't THAT big of a deal unless you happen to be close to the dwarf category. I don't think he qualifies in that regard. Btw, Tommy Newman is the guy that ruined our Spud legacy. That guy sent us on a downward spiral that we didn't completely recover from until the JJ era.
-
Yeah, sure Riley's success as a D1 QB is still unknown. Why? Because he has yet to get any real time at the position at this level. One thing I do know is that he was undoubtedly one of the best QB's in Texas high school history. That alone tells me he has a pretty reasonable chance for some real success here. People need to give the guy a chance before knocking him for his size etc. .
-
Yes, no doubt that it does tend to make opposing guards better shooters when they know there's not much of a chance that they'll get their shots blocked. One guy on the court well under six feet is fine, but two is a bit too much. We know that a healthy Josh is going to get his 30 minutes, so we could find ourselves in an even smurfier situation next season if we have three in the rotation.
-
Yeah, I would rather have a quality freshman PG come in next year to back up Johnson and hopefully turn into a three year starter. On the other hand, maybe this kid would be a nice addition. If he signs, would that leave us with one ship left for next season or does that depend on Mangrum's situation?
-
If you have mid-majors, who are the small majors? I've always thought that term stinks.

I'm looking for 25 wins also, but being in the top 25% of anything ain't bad. Especially when you do it three years in a row.

Notebook: Unt Hopes To Build From Tourney Loss
foutsrouts replied to mgsteve's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Last I heard about Holmen, was that he was 6'9" with a 42" verticle and still growing. Incredible leaping ability for a big man. Just hope he doesn't rack his head on the rim too often. -
To stick with the theme, we didn't watch the second half at this undisclosed location, and we didn't sit next to the TV and enjoy brews, chips, and .35 cent wings. We also were very (didn't) impressed with the TV's resolution. Still, we overall didn't enjoy everything but the final score. Btw, (did/didn't) like who won the championship tonight. Did really care much.
-
Mixed feelings about who I want to win tonight. WKU has a better chance to upset someone in the NCAAs, but I kind of hate to bolster WKU's recruiting next year if they could pull another Sweet 16 run. Guess I'm neutral and what happens happens.
-
Yeah, the easy dunks along with the FT's that came with them are what killed us. Still can't believe the FT differential.
-
Our JC transfer coming in (John Shorter) kind of fits the bill as a 6'5" slasher, rebounder, and defender, but I think he's a little weak from beyond the arc. We definitely could use someone to replace McCoy, Dennis, and possibly Mangrum from three point land. Sure would be nice to get a three point specialist in a big point guard package. Not exactly easy to find.
-
Yeah, that's who I was thinking of. Huge and led the nation in rebounding. Foot problems followed by booze problems. Supposed to have been the next Shaq.
-
WKU also had a monster seven footer about five years ago whose name escapes me, but he looked like a lock for the NBA if it weren't for health problems. Maybe we'll get lucky and our 6'8" 275 smu transfer will turn out to be something special down low next season. Our Whitehouse freshman to be next year could possibly develop into a D1 center, but I guess at the moment he looks to be more of a power forward type who possesses a lot of small forward skills as well. Really looking forward to seeing him on the court. Could develop into an NT all-time great with his size and athleticism.

Sixteen minutes for McCoy doesn't make much sense to me since his stats were VERY nice. Said I was through bitching, but that's worth mentioning.
-
Just checked out the stats, and unless they're incorrect, we got 12 FT attempts and they got 37? That pretty much tells the story even more than our very bad second half shooting stats. Heard the first half on the radio, and saw the second half on TV, and I'm not going to bitch and moan too much about the fouls, but that's quite a difference maker.
-
Yeah, the lack of minutes for both Tramiel and McCoy are my only gripes. McCoy missed a couple of shots in the first half, but I thought that he should have been given the chance to light it up a bit more in the second. Still not going to complain too much because the guys tried hard and it just didn't work out. Nice year. This team has, and will have a lot of talent next year. We should have more help under the bucket next season. I'm hoping that it all finally meshes together a little bit better right off the bat next year. Great effort guys!
-
We have a six eight two hundred and seventy-five pound defensive specialist, a six nine freshman jumping jack, and a six ten RS frosh replacement for Howerton coming in, so I think that with the continued development of Tramiel, Odufawu, and Hogans we should have a much better power inside game next year. Great job by the Seniors this year. Stewart, Dennis, Howerton, and McCoy had some very special Mean Green moments. Sorry that McCoy didn't have a better/longer college career, but with his body and range, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a shot at the next level. BOL to you guys!
-
I was at the F&H and it was a nice turnout. Sad result, but there's always next year. We're gonna be good. Just got "Slaughtered" at the end like a couple of weeks ago over in Hillbilly Haven. Two closely matched teams, but I still think we would beat them in a seven game series.

What Makes Brett Vito A Football Guru?
foutsrouts replied to greenblooded43's topic in Mean Green Football
So if Vito should be fired for not looking like a jock, I guess this means that TD (and half the coaches in the country) should be fired because he doesn't exactly look like a jock either. I can think of better reasons to fire either one of them. -
Why wasn't Christ born in Kentucky? Because they couldn't find three wisemen and a virgin.

Nice job and continue to spread the word!
