What Was The Thinking Around The Time When The Pit Was Built ?
foutsrouts replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Basketball
The concept of playing in a football stadium wasn't totally non-existent (UCLA vs. UofH - Astrodome) but it was rare. I guess with Jerry World it won't be so rare from here on out. Also, I don't think anyone can say that we will never average 5k again, because I think all it will take is for our program to step up onto the national stage a bit. Not an easy task of course, but certainly possible with a couple of tourney and big OOC wins. No doubt we have a few thousand dormant fans out there who would wake up from their slumber if we were to make the front page of the sports section on occasion. I guess we just have a lot of fickle fans who will only support a big-time winner, and who aren't overly impressed with our conference affiliation. Btw, a successful football program wouldn't hurt the basketball program much either. -
Those teams were pretty much all NAIA teams back then. The NAIA produced some very good programs in those days, and quite a few of them were competitive with upper level NCAA programs. Most of the Southland, Lone Star, and SWAC teams (among others) were NAIA before they hooked up with the NCAA. It wasn't so much a cut and dried "power conference" world just a few short decades ago.

Personally, I think the jury should be out until at least after next season in regard to JJ being our greatest BB coach ever. We'll see what he can do with a team that will be absolutely loaded with Seniors whom he coached for most of their careers. He also is going to have to really put on his recruiting track shoes next season to fill all of those open spots. Hopefully, we can pull off the tourney this year and squeeze into the 14th seed at 24-8 to help him in that endeavor.

Schools like West Texas State (Maurice Cheeks) and Oklahoma City (11 NCAA Tourneys - Abe Lemons) may sound like cupcakes now, but back in the day they and many other "smaller" schools had some pretty good basketball programs. No comparison to the Cameron and Univ. of the Southwest crowd.

Great Game And Win Last Night Against Denver
foutsrouts replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Very nice win, and Josh really took it over down the stretch. If he continues to look like he is getting back to his 90+% FT shooting, maybe we need to start sending him to the hole earlier in the game and getting him to the line even more often. He looked real comfortable out there. The only disappointing thing to me last night was the student turnout. I know it's a big weekend for other events, but not many showed up for a big Saturday night game. At least the ones who did show were very enthusiastic. Hope the crowd picks up from here. -
Beem Me Up Scottie...................
foutsrouts replied to Mo Green's topic in Mean Green Basketball
JJ's teams tend to be slow starters for whatever reason, and we were hit particularly hard by the injury bug this year. Although we're a good team and getting better, I don't think anyone claims that we are truly a great team at this point, and there are a lot of teams that play in the post-season who are not truly great teams. So yes, I do think we deserve to be in the post-season if we earn that right over the coming weeks. Why the Hell not? Because we give up too many threes? Don't think so. Most every team has a weakness in some area, and ours appears to be perimeter defense and perimeter points off the bench. I'm not crazy about our steals to turnover ratio either, but we seem to be improving a bit in the turnover category. Let's just hope the improvement continues. -
Yeah, our inside guys and TT are solid if not great, but we've got to get either Thomas or Mangrum going well from the outside if we're going to get the point production we're going to need down the road. Of course it would help if Josh starts shooting lights out as well. Very nice road win regardless. Good to see Alzee starting to contribute well the last couple of games.

I know someone well who was carjacked, kidnapped, and nearly murdered after three guys grabbed him at gunpoint on the edge of the Baylor campus. After they took the 5 bucks out of his pocket, they drove him out in the country looking for a place to kill him. He jumped out of the car while they were doing 50-60 on a country road and ran away as they opened fire. One of them is dead and the other two in prison. Scary stuff.

I'm kind of against it as well. These back and forth moves have not worked out too well during the TD era, and we're thin on the DL to say the least. Unless of course he has the hands of Johnny Quinn and we're actually going to throw him the ball every once in awhile.

Yes, I always thought that any school that can not correctly spell the word "Old" must be overrated. Maybe it's supposed to be in Spanish and they just forgot the accent mark?
-
Why not. We need all the credit we can get. I guess we can also brag that we were the first non-Ivy to win more than two in a row.
-
We were national champions 4 years in a row, so I guess you can say we have accomplished SOMETHING post-season in our history. I was thinking that we had only won three until I loooked it up. http://www.ncaa.com/history/m-golf-d1.html

Artie Spanier just dissed us pretty bad on Sports Radio by basically saying that we would be a last resort for a high school kid with a concussion. We ought to use our numbers to get that guy back. Never liked him or his opinions much anyway.

Tough loss. When our guards play 125 out of 200 minutes, and go a combined 10-31 with 10 boards and 3 assists, it kind of makes me want to ditch the 3 guard lineup and go big. It made more sense when we had McCoy, Johnson, and Dennis out there, but I'm not so sure about that now. Missing Hogans and the lack of experience for Holmen certainly hurts, but aAt least Spencer sounded like he deserves a shot at more minutes.

Even if they were winless, it's nice for us to beat a team with the history of WKU. UT has been pretty good in recent years, but Western Kentucky has got a history better than pretty much every school in our region. Nice win.

I'm Utterly speechless that we have finally hired someone here to coach our offense who does not specialize in the coaching of children. Utterly speechless. Guess I'll just celebrate by buying my next vehicle at Bill Utter Ford.

Another Committment - Defensive Back
foutsrouts replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I have to admit that 8-49 against "full fledged D1A competition" over the past 5 years (3-31 over the past 3 years) does sound a little bit "shambley" to me, but I guess there's always next year. -
I'm almost to the point where I would take Hitler if he had an arm like Marino and legs like Vick, so I would probably say give the guy a chance.

Is J'mison Morgan A Possible Future Recruit?
foutsrouts replied to ADLER's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Morgan better hurry up and get registered if he's gonna take minutes from Spencer, because Spencer will be gone after next year. He might be able to steal a few minutes away from Knox though. -
Texas would have beat the hell out of Bama if McCoy hadn't gone down. Texas' defense was totally dominant in the second half, and Bama's DB's sucked bigtime. Hell, Bama didn't really beat us all that badly when you think about it. BTW, this is coming from a guy who HATES TEXAS!!!!!!
-
So is the Bama vs. Boise game next Saturday? We do get to find out who really is the champ don't we?
-
If he would have had the cojones to dump his out of control OC he would probably be here at this very moment, and I doubt that we would be in the dire straits that we are in now. Not real smart on his part.
-
Too bad we don't have 4 more guys on this team named Knox. That fivesome couldn't possibly shoot worse or play worse defense than the guys out there tonight. JJ's teams are usually slow starters, but this one looks like it will have trouble getting past second gear this year. Hopefully I am wrong.

Why I Feel This Team Is Struggling
foutsrouts replied to Censored by Laurie's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Well, the front court has the same two starters as last year, but we are missing several very critical pieces. Hogans and Stewart were extremely quick defenders and rebounders, and we seem to basically be trying to replace them with an 18 year old Holmen and a six-four or so JC transfer in Shorter. Even Howerton played a pretty good defensive role in certain games last year. In a nutshell, we are missing a lot of what we had last year all over the court, and I hope we can quickly find a way to make up for it. JJ has got a tough job this year and let us hope that he can figure this thing out. -
Absolutely amazing the media attention that this thing is getting in the DFW area and elsewhere. I have no doubt that this would be treated as back page news if the exact thing happened to our program. I guess it kind of tells you what the Big 12 can do for your program good or bad. With the kind of money that is involved here, there will be one HELL of a lot of investigation dollars spent on this thing if it goes to court big-time without an early settlement. This could end up backfiring on some people, and we could end up with a new kind of "Craig's List" being dredged up from the old Mustang Mania pay to play days. That would be kind of funny for those of us who remember the incredible gaul of those people back then.
