I'll gladly chip in to send JJ on a two month radio silenced cruise to Antarctica.

I kind of have mixed feelings on the issue, but no one knows what UNT means because it's not universally used. Would be nice if it became well known as is USC, UAB, USF, UTEP and such, but that would likely take time and athletic success on a national level. On the other hand, the region of 6 million or so people is now becoming universally known as "North Texas", whereas in the olden days it was referred to more often as the "Metroplex". Tough choice, but if your casual fan in Maine were to turn on Sports Center, and immediately recognize who they were referring to when they mentioned UNT, then I would probably prefer that designation.
-
If he were a six eleven Center it might be worth a serious look, but as things stand now, I'm not so sure we want him as a veteran leader who pretty much plays the same position as TM and KH.
-
If Robinson were a pure center I might tend to agree, but I think I'll go with Jordon Williams because of his all around game. On the other hand, maybe I'll go with Franklin because of his leadership abilities and toughness? On third thought, I really like Trey Norris in that I think he can develop into a big-time scorer and assist guy down the road once he gets a couple of seasons under his belt. Hell, I think I like 'em all.

Sunbelt Might Add 11Th School For Football
foutsrouts replied to ColoradoEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree that a lot of it is just perception, and that this perception may vary depending on what part of the state you're from, but FWIW I think that LA Tech is generally considered the second best public school in Louisiana. At least that's what most of the LA people I know seem to think. -
With all of this young talent coming in, JJ has got a bigger coaching challenge ahead of him than usual. It's a great problem to have, but figuring out the puzzle of who starts where, and who comes off the bench and such is going to be interesting to watch. Great signing, and I hope we can soon find that last big-time piece of the puzzle. It's going to be fun.

From what I saw, Thompson looked damn good. Would have looked even better had Stradford not dropped that perfect pass that could have gone for a TD. Hope Stradford works hard this Summer on catching the football, because he's got everything else going for him to be a very good receiver.

I love deadeye three point shooters. Bring him on and his friend too. Btw, it's hard to tell from pictures, but FWIW Smart is listed at 6' 4" and doesn't look much taller than Forte in that Ninjaface article.

Spring Game Roll Call, Attendance Prediction
foutsrouts replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
Anyone know the format of the game? Seems like TD used some kind of funky Spring Game format the last time I attended one. I'll be bringing one or possibly two, and I'm going to guess we'll have 2,000. Hope it's more, and that the novelty of a new coach packs 'em in. -
Mean Green Nickname Article (North Texas/ Unt)
foutsrouts replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Those were some pretty big linemen for the day. For the most part, they would have dwarfed the small line that started on UT-Austin's '69 National Championship team. -
Nice place to occasionally visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Green chile, and skiing and hiking up in the mountains toward Sante Fe. That's about it. Spent over two weeks there on an audit once, and I was ready to leave after two days. They're definitely a different kind of people over there. They do like their UNM basketball though.

He was a Parade All-American as well. Sure it would be great if he were 3-4 inches taller, but he's still the kind of guy I would want on my team. Not just for the talent he puts on the floor, but also because guys like him can help raise their teammates to a new level of play. I say go for him. That's especially true if we still have two schollys left to give, and if Jarion Henry has sent out signals that he's not interested in coming to Denton. Is a possible Spencer appeal the only reason we don't yet know for sure whether we have one or two scholarships left? Sure hope we're not having to play that waiting game, because we obviously need to get these guys signed up ASAP. http://newsok.com/roger-franklins-game-has-some-bite/article/3418281

Breaking News On The Basketball Front
foutsrouts replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Great news! Congratulations JJ! -
So was Johnny Schindler, and he did pretty well for us as a 5'8"ish 170 poundish DB.
-
I don't know the guy's game, but his Uncle referring to him as being 6'3" and a half does worry me a bit for a guy who likes to play down low. I agree that we really have to find a big man for next season, even if he is pretty much a defensive and rebounding type guy. If not, we have to hope for huge things out of Knox this off season. Somehow, I don't think Mitchell wants to be our main big.

Quarterback Derek Thompson (North Texas)
foutsrouts replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes, he looks, acts, and talks like a serious QB. Looking forward to the Spring game. -
Sunbelt Might Add 11Th School For Football
foutsrouts replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
Either that, or take out San Antonio and San Marcos, add Houston, Rice, UTEP, and Tulane, and recreate a 9 member SWC. Nice to dream, but it sure would be great for travel and natural rivalries. -
That lame dude gets well into the six-figures? Possibly so, but last I heard all but the top of the heap were making something more like mid-five figures. I know he has been there quite awhile now, but I didn't think that even with their recent ratings success, that nice six-figure salaries had filtered down to his level. He and "Whiner" are the primary reasons that I gradually moved away from listening to that station.
-
Maybe so, but if our strategy were to attack the bucket, our great FT shooting team probably could have scored nearly as many points from the line as Butler scored in total.
-
You're right. Why bother with this gigantic inclusive tournament, when we could just follow something akin to the good ole BCS format and have the winners of the "power conferences" fight it out after their respective tournaments? Makes so much more sense, because the big money teams are the only ones worthy of the title of NCAA National Champion. I'm sure everyone would be thrilled with that arrangement.

Great to hear. I'm going to Houston this weekend, but getting there on time for the game will be tough. Really hope TT can light it up for the scouts. He's got what they're looking for, and the more they see the better.
-
He didn't mention Special Teams or DB's, so hopefully at least those two areas looked OK to go along with the RB's. Pretty depressing report. No wonder I'm taking my time in moving over here from the BB board.
-
I'd be surprised if they could afford to pay enough more than us to justify a move. Especially with the talent we have heading our way. http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2011/mar/28/cuonzo-martins-base-salary-missouri-state-was-1400/

Another big job taken. Not a bad thing. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6264533

Either pure random picking luck, or he must have a VCU connection. I don't see how anyone could have projected VCU. Maybe Butler because of last year, but VCU? Pretty amazing.
