  1. What say you GMG, will the mean green be over, push, or under 5 wins in 2012?
  2. Jimmerson was the most impressive in the spring game IMO. He might not be the starter this year, but with a year or two to work continue to work on his size and speed combined with his already good feet, vision, and cuts I think he'll be a great back here. I am not as worried about RB as I am the secondary, but it's still a concern. Witfield/Jimmerson might be a year away from contributing and I don't know if Byrd is the answer. The passing game will have to improve for us to improve offensively next season. I have no doubt though, if Power gets 30+ receptions and Chancellor/Bynes/Delgado at the least improve marginally we'll have a great passing attack. Having 4 players on the field who can make a catch on any down will be huge for creating holes.
  3. I really don't understand why an AD would go out of his way to single us out. You're supposed to represent your university with class if you're the AD, this is borderline disrespectful. I hope we destroy ULL in everything this year.
  4. I think having a strength and conditioning coach who's as dedicated to this job as our current one is key. Make no mistake, this is the best coaching staff top to bottom in Denton, Texas since Hayden Fry. Mac knows how to develop talent better than both Dickey and Dodge and has more tools to do so. some of these guys who are project players will be stars here. The players love Mac and will work tirelessly for him, Dodge never had that from his players. That will make a huge difference in the coming years IMO.
  5. Just an interesting note, using scout's rankings, in 2012 we offered zero players(or had zero chance to land players) in the top 100 nationally at their positions. I'm sure we did recruit players in that category, but it's clear we are looking at higher graded recruits for the future. Our highest rated signees were #116 CB David Busby and #118 OG Boone Feldt in 2012, and so far in 2013 we have offered 15 known players in the top 100 at their positions. I know it's early, and interest will fade as major schools come in and offer, but the level of recruit we're going after is impressive so far. We'll see if we can land any of them, early momentum will make a huge difference. I think this past season when we received a slew of commits from 1/29/12 to signing day it was a bunch of tweeners or plan B guys that got offers when a couple players decommitted and a couple others chose to go elsewhere. Guys like Mark Lewis, Lajaylin Smith, Dutton Watson, Mustafa Haboul, Jamal Marshall who could pan out to be great players, but are considered more of a risk. Those days are over, with Mac now having 2 classes under his belt, this should be his best class, hands down. Looking forward to seeing some stars on the board this season as opposed to the usual "Not ranked."
  6. Getting a winning season under our belt in one of the next two seasons is imperative for the future of our program. I think in 2013 even with a tougher conference slate will be easier to get 6 wins than next season. Ball State & Ohio at home plus a game and @ Georgia gives us our best shot at 2-2 in OOC in a while. Ohio will be tougher than Ball State but at Apogee we will always have an advantage. In conference play we know UTSA won't be very good. FIU has a very strong senior class this season and could be facing their coach leaving if they play up to expectations. I think we can compete with UAB, UTEP, Rice, and Tulane right away. You can probably throw LT in that group too although I don't know much about their team. The point I'm trying to make is this team will still be young in 2012, and even though we'll have tougher opponents, in 2013 we'll field our best team since 2004, and that feels good to say looking forward.
  7. It seems to me we're recruiting players this season who are more highly ranked than ever before. I'm not talking about 4* players or anything, but there's more and more guys listing us that are in the top 100 at their positions nationally and this should be a great recruiting season for us. The CUSA change should give us a boost and the days of signing players with no other FBS offers or only SBC offers are over. We will need all the help we can get to compete with Tulsa, I think they'll have the west locked down for the first couple of years.
  8. Really how shitty is your life when you get enjoyment out of coming to forums to troll North Texas fans? How does one wake up and think, "I'll show those guys at UNT by posting on gomeangreen and refuting everything their posters say while trolling them every month or so under new user names MUAHAHAHAHAHA?" I genuinely don't see how or why anyone would spend time doing that.
  9. We will now have an opening for 2014/2015 with Tulsa being in our new conference. Perfect opportunity to use these new contacts and get us a good home and home series. Hopefully Houston would like to continue the series, and if not Ark. St or ULL on a permanent basis outside the conference would be fine with me.
  10. I think it's Johnathan Motley. He's 6'8 as they said in the podcast, from Houston, and has Baylor on schools of interest although no offer. He could have recently gotten offers from both Tech & Baylor. He's #10 in the state on ESPN as linked above. It would be great if it was him, there's not much film available but he looks good from what I've seen.
  11. I became a fan in 2004, so I've only been through one good season of football, but still enjoyed every season. However, where we are now compared to 2004 is night and day. Across the board from budget to administration to coaches to support we have improved, and it will only get better. I am still amazed that we have had not one, but two great people representing UNT in Gretchen Bataille(Can't remember the spelling) and Lane Rawlins. We are incredibly lucky to be where we are today given how bad football got to be at one point. The conference move, some basketball press, maybe a bowl game in the next two seasons and who knows how far we can go. It is imperative that we have strong attendance this season though, a 6-6 football season or better would do wonder for the perception of the program when it comes to students. I have sat in the student section the past 8 years and know the type of people that come and go there. It had been disappointment after disappointment at home until last season, I'm surprised we stayed over 15k in some years. I think the conference move won't be a massive factor, but will motivate some around the area to come to more games, I'm pretty confident of that. I've heard a few students around campus talking about it, but I'm not sure most really know about the conference. I think when 2013 rolls around we'll see North Texas athletics in a light it's never been before and with two winnable at home OOC games(Ball St. & Ohio) on the slate could be our breakout year, I think a return to a bowl game and the fact that people still talk of our bowl run would really get the students out, it's only a matter of time. I'm Still just amazed how far we have came in 8 years without any major football success.
  12. Sorry if this has been asked, but is he going to be immediately eligible? I can't imagine him taking over for Franklin from the get go, but having another 6'8 (real) post player would be great.
  13. +1's for any and every thread, I'm plussing everywhere.
  14. For what it's worth, the Showtyme 2013 team has a WR we're recruiting for football. Ladell Marshall
  15. I don't care who is coaching, this team should be expected to win a game or two in the tourney, not just make it and bow out in the first round. WKU & MT will be really good next season, we need to get as many quality OOC games in as possible hopefully his scheduling practices are different than Johnny Jones.
  16. On the bright side atleast he's not as bad as the ULM poster
  17. Count me in favor as well, solid hire all around. The coaches we have in place are impressive to say the least compared to what we had in place in 2000, we have come a long way and this will be another hire we can impress people with. With all three schools(SMU, TCU, UNT) hiring new coaches it's imperative that we strike first and get in to the NCAA tourney and win a game or two this season, it would go a long way with recruits in the area to be the only metroplex team in the tourney. I just hope if we get in our OOC showing will be strong enough to net us a 12 seed or higher, that seems unrealistic though.
  18. It's tough to take a lot from these games, but the team did look faster than in the past to me. Definitely not as fast as you would like, but good enough for the belt next season. DT looked good, seasoned, and ready to be a leader. Osborne even looked OK at times but the O line play wasn't very good yesterday. Too many sacks given up, but again it's tough to tell one way or another about the o line in a spring game, once Cyril is back I'm confident we'll have an above average unit for 2012. KC Obi played well as did the back up #49 Daryl Mason who's a sophmore, LB's looked alright and Brelan Chancellor has continued to get better and will be a real threat at the slot position. Marcus Trice played well and you could tell they made a habit of not throwing his way. If Delgado, Bynes and Sampson every now and again can hold down the outside WR spots, Brelan will wreck SBC defenses this season. I hope Teegarden can continue to improve as well and that Power doesn't regress from his shoulder injury, but I was content with what I saw yesterday. This team has improved but still has some holes and question marks heading in to the fall, but I still think we have a 6 win team here.
  19. Right, but do you really think it was 19/9? Seems like this guy exaggerated a little bit.
  20. Okay, let's do the math here. 28,000 in attendance with a little over a third being Houston fans clearly, that's 9,333 Houston fans. You can clearly see the Houston fans section in the far right of this video below, with maybe 500 additional fans scattered. Looks more like 2000 Houston fans, not 9k+ as you suggested in a brilliant first post. I look forward to more incredible posts from such a prolific mind.
  21. I saw what Boutwell was able to do this past season as a sophmore, and I don't expect anything less than an all conference player by the time he's a senior. A new DC + 4 new starters in secondary is going to put even more pressure on the d line this season. They came up with 27.5 sacks this past season, and we'll need an amount similar from them in 2012. I have no doubt we'll be improved here with a full year under their belts, but still slightly more concerned about the defense than the offense, I guess I should reserve judgement until the spring game.
  22. I'm starting to get more concerned about the d line than I am about the secondary. I think Boutwell has just about reached his max weight at 260 and that's unfortunate because not many players go as hard as he does. He will always be at a 30-40 pound disadvantage, The fact that we've had to convert two ends(Orr & Lincoln) doesn't bode well for the future. Looking at the roster, I can see why they did it. Looks like we could be a year off from having the mean green defense we want to see out there, even though the LB's should be in the top 3 in the sun belt, and probably the most deep in the conference. 91 Orr, Austin DT 6-4 245 RFr. Seabrook, TX (Clear Lake HS) 97 Abbe, Richard DT 6-4 319 Jr. Lubbock, TX (Monterey HS) 90 Boutwell, Ryan DT 6-3 261 Jr. China Spring, TX (China Spring HS) 96 Cantly, Tevinn DT 6-4 311 Sr. Arlington, TX (Lamar HS) 58 Ladner, Michael DT 5-11 280 Jr. Blue Ridge, TX (Blue Ridge HS) 95 Lincoln, Alex DT 6-2 249 So. Cibolo, TX (Steele HS) Hopefully Abbe will be able to step up, we're not going to last long with 250 pound tackles.
  23. The point I was trying to get across is that we shouldn't be surprised when we have FCS opponents on the schedule every year for the next 4 years. Finding home and homes for 2014/2015, even at this stage will be difficult.
  24. I'm not trying to get ahead of ourselves, but if we're changing conferences, we'll have to address the OOC schedule and do it quickly. We have a home & home with Tulsa in 2014/2015 that will need to be replaced, I am sure it would be easy for us to replace them with one of ASU or UL. But I am more concerned with the fact that it looks like 3 away games for the next 4 or 5 years, unless we bring in an FCS team. It is going to be difficult to find a school to get a home and home with quickly to replace Tulsa, I hope it is a SBC school. It's going to take some money, or we're going to have an FCS team on the schedule at home until 2016. The change presents huge challenges, but also gives us a chance to salvage our future schedules and get two home games, and two away, instead of 3. I just hope it's not an FCS school every year to bridge that gap. 2013 1.09/21 - at Georgia 2.TBA - Ball State 3.TBA - at Ohio 4.? *Need a home game here 2014 1.08/30 - at Texas 2.09/06 - SMU 3.09/13 - at Tulsa *Needs to be replaced by a home game 4.10/04 - at Indiana 2015 1.09/05 - Tulsa *Needs to be replaced by a home game 2.09/12 - at SMU 3.TBA - at Iowa 4.? *Need a home game here As you can see, we'll need to find 4 home opponents for 4 years. I think it's very likely we get an FCS in two of the years at home, and sign a home and home that way we would only have 3 away games in OOC one time from 2013-2015. Either way we've signed one too many away games for the future, but you can't have your cake and eat it too. We've complained about OOC schedule forever, well now we get the schools we wanted to play in conference, and will have complainers about the OOC when conference slate is better. I wonder how RV will do with all this, it looks like a big mess to me personally.
  25. I think the players will stay regardless of who the coach is. That said, I'd be in favor of hiring Forrest if that's 100% who the players wanted, but let's not rule out the fact that it's usually better to hire a coach who's "been there done that". Now I don't know who that coach would be, but if it's not Forrest, it needs to be done in the next ten days. And his first nine days need to be spent meeting with the players and making sure that they stay. At this point, I'm 50/50 between Forrest & a new coach. If I had to choose though, honestly, I would hire a new coach with skins on the wall & a winning record. I know we probably can't break the bank with this hire, but money shouldn't be an issue. There will be a lot of coaches nationwide wanting a chance to coach TM & the rest of this team. They'll probably do it for JJ's price or less too. A change of pace could be exactly what this team needs, the hiring standards have changed here. We should do what the bigger schools are doing to us, and cherry pick a guy from a lesser program. I don't want to hire a random assistant from a Big 6 school. We need a young coach with DFW ties, who could maybe keep Forrest on.
