McNulty utilizing experience in QB race
The Fake Lonnie Finch replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Again, everyone on the team is an athlete and, therefore, athletic. One quarterback is perceived to be a better runner than the others. It doesn't mean he's more athletic. There is more to "athletics" than running. Again (and again and again), "athletic" encompasses not just the ability to run, but strength, agility, power, intelligence, discipline...and, with quarterbacks, throwing accurately. If the only box I can check for a quarterback is "runs faster than the others," that's not really a good thing. To me, that's not really being the better athlete; that's just being a fast runner. Great. Unless we're running the wishbone, single wing, veer, or some variation of those, and giving the QB 15-20 keeps, I'm not all that exciting about a quarterback's best attribute being his ability to run fast. -
SMU manages to schedule home and home with Baylor
The Fake Lonnie Finch replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
Of all the teams we played in the 60s and 70s, it's the series with Cincinnati and San Diego State I'd like to see renewed. To me, it's like the scheduliing run with old Missouri Valley foe Tulsa. What we are really talking about here is 2018-2025. As of now, we have the schedule full through 2017. 2018-2021, we have SMU and Army. A third OOC is needed in each of those seasons. Many, many schools have empty schedules for those years. Strike now. He's a short list of who I'd like to see us negotiate home and home with for any of the seasons, 2018 - 2025: Wake Forest We've never played them. Tulsa/Rice-like as a private school which is occasionally good. This season, ridiculously, Wake Forest plays ULM and Utah State...and both are road games! If they'll go to Monroe and Logan, in the same season, surely they would come to Denton. Syracuse We've never played them. Like watching games played at the Carrier Dome, for some reason. 'Cuse has grads all over; know some in the DFW area. They home and homed Central Michigan. Lots of history without the douchebaggery of the regional historic powers we schedule - OU, Texas, LSU, etc. North Carolina State Again, never played them. They have kind of a hippie reputation at their school as well; old fans would likely find some kindred spirits there. In 2015, they played at both South Alabama and Old Dominion. Pittsburgh Never played them. They played on the road at FIU (2014), Akron (2015), and Oklahoma State (2016); so, they will go. Pro stadium for home game. Like Syracuse, history without the apparent douchbaggery. Virginia Never played them. Historic institution. They have road games in the future against Connecticut (2016) and Boise State (2017), plus they play at BYU this season. They've home and homed TCU recently as well. So, they are game for travel across time zones. Northern Illinois We've played them once (1996) and won. They have been very good of late. They have future home and homes with UNLV (2014, 2015) and Wyoming (2015, 2016). Kent State/Miami (OH)/Toledo I lobbied for and like the MAC home and homes we had with Ball State and Ohio. Here are three MACs we've never played. In 2016, Toledo is playing at both Arkansas State and Tulsa. Washington or Washington State We've never played either. Selfishly, I'd lean toward Wazzu just for an excuse to see the Palouse. I'd also be up for an old Big 12 re-hash of Leach versus McCarney (Leach leads the series, 4-1). Of course, Seattle is a good trip as well on the other side of the state. The Huskies, though, rarely home and home East of the Rockies. Colorado We've played them once (Jamario's national break out game, 2004). They have given San Jose State a 2 for 1 (2015-2017). They have given Massachusetts a home and home (2014, 2015). Surely, they'd like to hit Texas again for recruiting purposes. As of now, they have no games scheduled with any Texas school. Texas State or New Mexico State History shows that we have played these two schools more than any other. Amazing, no? New Mexico State is desperate for games. Texas State is aiming to get where we (and UTSA) are. Crazy, no? Las Cruces ain't much for tourism, but El Paso is nearby. San Marcos is a nice road trip. Bobcat fans are strewn, for better or worse, throughout DFW. So, it'd likely be a good draw. Kentucky This is a school we've played three times in our history (we're 0-3); but, they've never come to Denton. Coached by a Stoops brother now. This is likely the most beatable Stoops brother. A chance to play an SEC school and actually have better than a punchers chance of winning. San Diego State or San Jose State Already discussed this. Nice trip to Cali for the fans and families. -

Just read and you see what they want: McCarney -Consistency -Productivity -Toughness -Leadership -Efficiency Canales -Trust among players (McCarney would call this leadership) -Knows the system -Get into good, not bad, positions (again, efficiency) -Consistency -
It's good business for them. And, as demonstrated before, when they can rile up governments, they can get a free hand into taxpayer money as well. As with everything else, follow the dollar. Televangelists and climate change pushers are close cousins. Each has found a fear they can profit from. And, there are plenty of weakminded that will follow both camps. Both are into the public and taxpayers. Televangelists have their tax breaks; climate spookers have their research and grant dollars. Follow...the dollar. Al Gore and Jim Bakker. Same guy.

SMU manages to schedule home and home with Baylor

Last year, I did one of these analysis - home and homes of other schools with BCS conferences. We've hitched our wagon to SMU and Army, and that is fine. If I could change one thing, it would be to not have such a long series with Army. I'd take a home and home with Army and also try to get home and home with the other two service academies, Air Force and Navy. Fellas...Georgia State has a home and home with Air Force (2014, 2016)...I mean...come on. Georgia State. And, Air Force will host Abilene Christian in 2016. Abilene Christian, you all. ACU. Your grandfather's Abilene Christian College of Johnny Perkins, Wilbert and Cle Montgomery, and that Olympic Pole Vaulter whose name I can't recall. Texas State will host Navy this year. Navy hosts the likes of Colgate and Fordham in 2015 and 2016. Navy plays at FAU in 2017. I like the Army thing, but the long series? One more home and home would have done the job. I loved the winnable MAC home and homes we played. Not opposed to more of that, but with MWC schools this time around. Colorado State has a four game home and home already with UTSA. Yep. UTSA. San Jose State and San Diego State have pretty open schedules in the future. Sexy? No. But, different and winnable. And, an ultra rare UNT trip to Cali. When's that last time we've been in California for football? Our last trip into that time zone was 1997 with a visit to Oregon State. Our last trip to Cali was 1981 at San Jose State. -

This is the truth. Unfortunately, WRs and RBs are a dime a dozen in the NFL. And, these days, especially RBs. Anyone notice that it ain't RBs getting huge contracts these days? As an RB, unless your name is Adrian Peterson, you're lucky if your own team even tries to re-sign you. -
Bingo. And, Tulsa is kind of in the same boat. They've had several winning seasons over the past decade, have renovated Skelly Stadium, but still have a difficult time filing it up...mainly given that OU, Oklahoma State, and Arkansas have many alumni in Tulsa and all are within hella easy driving distance from Tulsa.

I kind of agree with smoothfresh here. When you look at some of the things they are doing, the cost is pretty low...in some case, probably nothing. Free lesson with the golf coach, for example. Isn't the golf coach pretty much teaching golf all day anyway? For the sake of the department, you ask him or her to host an alumni/season ticket holder (stake-holder, payor of salaries in some respects) for an hour? Is stuff that that so difficult a hook-up really? Lunch with the AD? Doesn't the AD pretty much have lunch every day? What additional is really being asked? Have a sandwich with a season ticket holder instead of one of the coaches one day? One day? It looks to me that what TU is doing is low-hanging fruit type of marketing here. But...why not? If all the fruit on the tree is good, get it from all over. And, here's the thing: I haven't bought a ticket to a TU sporting event from TU since 2009. Yet, they still drip e-mail me at least once a month with ticket deals. What is the cost of a drip e-mail marketing campaign? Pretty much next to nothing these days.

My 3L year of law school, OU came to Skelly for the first time since 1987. Before that, it had been since the 40s that OU had gone to Tulsa. What happened after Switzer was run off in 1989 is that subsequent coaches kind of began to ignore Tulsa area recruits. So, during the time, you had the Lockett brothers go on to star at K-State and former Sooner Ed McQuarters' son, R.W., go on to star at Oklahoma State. Stoops had fences to mend with Tulsa area prep coaches. And, he did so in pretty short order. This will be OU's third time to go to Tulsa since Stoops took over. It's really no different, though, than Texas, A&M, and Tech going in-state to places like UTEP and SMU. It's especially smart for Tech because Lubbock is a long drive for recruits to make an unofficial visit. In addition to Texas A&M and Tech playing at SMU recently, if I recall correctly, Texas played road games at UTEP and Houston. Obviously, preps are already going to know about A&M and UT. But, hitting the Houston area is still a pretty good call, I think. This is where, I think, we all hope we can start to draw teams who want presence with DFW area recruits. UTSA has done a good job of getting schools scheduled for home games - Oklahoma State, Arizona, Arizona State, and Kansas State all on their schedule in the future. Gives Austin-San Antonio area recruits a chance to check out those schools close to home.

Mid Spring UNT QB Poll: Who will start @UT?
The Fake Lonnie Finch replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Here's something I don't understand: Why can't we just be happy with whomever it is that wins the QB battle? Dajon. Josh. What difference does it make? If one or the other wins, it is because the coaching staff feels he is the one who gives us the best chance to win. After seeing what this coaching staff did in 2013 with a bunch of walk-on WRs and a defensive line that was thin, I'm at the point of trusting them here. QB is just one position in 2014, just like in all seasons. Don't take your eye off the ball: the question will be the new front seven on the defensive side of the ball. Whether it can stop the run and create pressure on opposing QBs is every bit as important as who our starting QB is, if not moreso. These are the charges as recorded this day, 15 November 1962. Faithfully submitted, Douglas C. Neidermeyer, Sergeant at Arms.- 42 replies

Beyond The Spring - Spring QB Battle
The Fake Lonnie Finch replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
Here's another point to be made, humans: For years, we wanted to win again. Now that we've won again, there is complaint about how we win. We saw the version of this in 2013 take the form of being happy that were winning, but unhappy that it was Derek Thompson who was leading the way. And, so, now, some get into this spring funk that this quarterback or that one won't be crowned King yet. And, oh, how stupid and short-sighted of these experienced coaches that we held RV's feet to the fire to hire. I, personally, don't care if we run the Single Wing as long as we keep winning. -

Here's something else for you who believe "athleticism" is only equated to quarterbacks who can "improvise/abandon the game plan": Maybe the Hispanic coach Canales is racist. Although, our last "Johnny Manziel-type" was white and is now awaiting NCAA approval of his transfer to a D-II school. So, I guess that angle won't work either. Well, shucks. I guess we're just stuck with coaches who expect their quarterbacks to be leaders, learn the playbook, and have the discipline to stick to the game plan...believing, foolishly, that over the span of a season such will lead to winning football games and competing for conference and bowl titles. Maybe Liberty Christian can find a spot for those dolts, McCarney and Canales; I hear it's looking for some new football coaches. -

Beyond The Spring - Spring QB Battle
The Fake Lonnie Finch replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
The thing I like about Coach Canales is that he sees the big picture: Quarterbacking and Team are more important concepts than the overused, worn out "athleticism." They are all athletes; that is why they are on scholarship. Many here, though, fall for the notion that because one quarterback is faster than another, then he is more athletic. That is wholly laughable. There is more to an athlete than speed. There is agility. There is strength. There is intelligence. There is power. And, there is discipline. At quarterback, who gives you the best long term results over a 12-14 game season? Is it the guy who understands the position and game plan, and constantly commits himself to the same? Or, is it the guy who abandons the game plan and study of the position because he believes his athleticism puts him on a different level than the other 21 people on the field while he's running around "creating?" -
