  1. No. All he did was give a ton of money to the program. Something I doubt you've done or will ever do.
  2. I'm not throwing any punches. Go back and look at who first got personal with whom. What I want is for RV to take the process seriously and get us a good coach. Not a local hero. Not someone who will use UNT as a stepping stone. But, a good, solid coach who can not only build the program on the field, but off of it as well. Someone who could help us get out of the Sun Belt. High school coaches are just that - high school coaches. There are plenty of coaches out there with real experience - more than three years exprience at losing programs. Seriously, folks. This has got to be a good hire. It could mean the difference between remaining I-A or slipping back down to I-AA. Some of us seem to realize it, others seem to think it's fantasy playtime.
  3. That's Katie Hnida, the Colorado kicker who transferred to New Mexico. Keep up with college football much? I mean, outside of Austin? Dode should be a legitimate candidate for...an assistant coaching job somewhere. Applewhite is where he needs to be. Also, being on the staff of 1-10 and 4-5 teams hardly qualifies as "stud" in most people's view...if they know anything about college football, that is. I've already listed several candidates in another post - Spencer Leftwich, Tim Billings, and Tony Samuel. Those are just three that pop into mind. They are countless others with good I-A coaching experience who would take what UNT pays for the head coaching job.
  4. Agreed.
  5. First, I'm guessing by the level of your joking, you're a either young man or an immature man. Second, I have nothing against Texas QB's, but want a good hire at UNT. The former Texas QBs continually named on here are not serious hires for a I-A program for head coach. It doesn't matter how many times they've beaten Grapevine or won state titles. It's not the same, not even close. Anyone with even a smidgen of knowledge about football, I-A college football, knows that. It may be fine that you admire Todd Dodge and Major Applewhite. But, there are infinitely more qualified applicants out there. Seriously.
  6. As a lot, we're a pretty ungrateful bunch. When I was at UNT, we sucked at the I-AA level. With Dickey, we went to some bowl games. It's painfully obvious that he was a trainwreck. The problem has always been, and you can ask just about anyone here, Dickey played QB at Kansas State, not Texas. So, he wasn't qualified to be hired. The former athletic director here just didn't know that.
  7. We could hire Shea Morenz or Mary Lou Retton's husband. They were Longhorn QBs, too. Think of how buzzed everyone would be about that.
  8. Well, maybe they'll hire your buddy at Coppell then...even though he wasn't a Longhorn QB!
  9. You know who I am, but did you know that some people on here think I'm UNT assistant head coach Kenny Evans? One guy even claims Rick Villareal thinks I'm Kenny Evans posting complaints about scheduling, the stadium, etc. I think someone is on the computer down at the 6th Floor Museum in downtown Dallas. Nice ACU plug, by the way!
  10. Guys, remember this about Gary Gibbs... Before he headed off to N.O., Fran offered him the D.C. job at A&M. Gibbs balked because it didn't pay enough. A&M's D.C. probably makes more than Darrell Dickey was pulling down here, so Gibbs is a pipedream. Ditto that for the people who suggest coordinators at BCS powerhouses. Some of those guys are making 300k+. Some runningback coaches at those schools make 200k+. We don't have that kind of jack to throw around in Denton, so be realistic.
  11. This list doesn't make any sense, cozy. It doesn't list any former Longhorn quarterbacks. It should be obvious to you by now that the way to build a I-A program is to hire a high school coach or the assistant from losing programs. Try again.
  12. Oh, sure you can't. The QB isn't an integral part of the offense. I guess if you're only putting up 152 in a season, the QB coach is probably doing a great job and everyone else is to blame. It's so obvious I'm surprised we didn't see it before.
  13. There are many orangebloods on this board who masquerade as Mean Green fans. They know hiring a 28-year old from losing programs isn't smart, but they don't care. Their aim isn't to get us better, but to get their former gridiron heroes a job. Yes, it's ridiculous, but it's true.
  14. He did a great job at Syracuse, too. I think they won one or two games last year. It's hard to remember. Yeah, here it is, all on cfbdatawarehouse.com. Syracuse was the Big East Co-Champions in 2004. Then, they got rid of Pasqualoni, brought in Greg Robinson and Major Applewhite and went...1-10 in 2005. The one win was over...Buffalo, not the Bills, though, the Bulls. Let's see. The Orangeman rolled up 152 points in 2005 with Applewhite helping with the offense. Over 20% of that in one game against...Buffalo, the Bills, not the Bulls. Rice is set to have a losing season with Applewhite on staff this year, too. He's consistent. I'm beginning to see why this hire is a good idea. I mean, the guy obviously has impact wherever he goes. And, I mean, immediate impact. It's tough help take a team from Co-Champs of a BCS conference to 1-10. Great credentials.
  15. I met Dunham at a remote he was doing for the Ticket last year. We chatted up NT football for a good bit. He's a good guy and genuinely loves UNT. Firing Jub-Jub would be as stupid as hiring Applewhite.
  16. Personally, I like our former OL coach Spencer Leftwich who has turned Tulsa's line into one of the best in the NCAA. Played prep and college ball in Texas, coached in Texas, plenty of ties. http://tulsahurricane.cstv.com/sports/m-fo..._spencer00.html But, at 41, he's too old for the Applewhite sycophants. Also, Tulsa has a winning record and Rice has a losing record. You always want to snatch coaches from losing programs. Serious programs are always combing the losers for coaching gems. Anyway, other serious candidates: Tony Samuel - former Cornhusker player, Standford and Prudue assistant, NMSU head coach, current Southeast Missouri State head coach. Tim Billings - Wake Forest WR coach, former defensive coordinator at Marshall in the 1990s when they won two I-AA titles, and went undefeated at a I-A in 1999. http://wakeforestsports.cstv.com/sports/m-...ings_tim00.html Again, though, both are older and more experienced than Applewhite, so that may be a problem with some of you.
  17. I agree. And, Blankenship is even younger than Applewhite, so...even better.
  18. He makes too much money in retirement with his restaurants and other businesses to waste his time in Denton. He's funny, though. The Real Lonnie Finch got a national title ring playing for The King.
  19. Oh, cool, a joke thread. In the spirit of the thread, then, how about Caleb Blankeship. Sure, he just graduated from Tulsa last year, but his dad was a high school coach. Maybe all those years of watching dad draw up plays at the kitchen table combined with playing in Kragthorpe's NFL-type scheme have prepared him for a head coaching job at the ripe old age of 23.
  20. I'm still in a fog as to why anyone would think I'm Kenny Evans. I'm simply a UNT alum who occassionally posts on gomeangreen.com. It's not my life, dude. I'll add this to what VideoEagle said...if the athletic department is so worried about the personal opinions of the coaching staff that it has people troll message boards unaffiliated with the University, then there are problems within the program far beyond what we can see - problems with the coaches and problems with the athletic department itself. fly, if you and Rick are so dadgum sure I'm Kenny Evans, put your money where your mouth is. If I'm Kenny Evans, I'll give you each $1,000 cash. If I'm not Kenny Evans, you guys each give me $1,000 cash or credit toward tickets to future UNT sporting events. My $2,000 versus yours and Rick's. How's that sound? I like it. The odds for me are really good with this bet. Honestly, I'm out of here. My last posts were in June. Maybe I'll post again January. Sheesh.
  21. Oh, Rick Villareal himself thinks that I'm Kenny Evans? And, so, he's told you to stalk my posts? Or, you just stalk my posts for some other unsound psychological reason? Well, if you are Rick's little monkey/errand boy, I would be happy to meet both of you anywhere you want, shake your hand and show you my driver's license, whatever, to prove to you that I'm not Kenny Evans. Ridiculous. Making a suggest on an internet message board in response to a thread is hardly tantamount to "bagging on" anyone. Seriously, have you considered that not everyone walking the planet has to agree with you about UNT football? Ever heard the saying 'reasonable minds can disagree'? It honestly doesn't seem like you have. Also, I hope for the sake of our athletic department that Rick Villareal doesn't waste his time worrying about internet message boards. For that matter, I hope that someone in his position doesn't have lackeys out patrolling the message boards. That'd make him look real small-time and paranoid.
  22. You know what, fly, I'm not sure what your problem is with me. I'm not Kenny Evans. I'd be happy to meet you somewhere public to show you that I'm not Kenny Evans. You could also have one of the computer gurus check my I.P. and they could tell you where I am. Whatever you chose to do, get a life as well. My life is busy enough and good enough that I don't post or read here everyday. And, it's certainly full enough that I don't have some stalker mentality about other people on an internet message board. Seek help. I mean, really, from professionals.
  23. We're not building it right yet. You look at downtrodden programs that worked their way up. They didn't do it by constantly sceduling teams that would pound the crap out of them. They take a game with a Division I-AA, a home and home with a reasonably well matched team, and maybe one with a lower tier power conference team. It worked for Kansas State. It's working for Tulsa as their program is resurrected. For some reason our athletic director seems content to let us get pummeled for money. Getting pummeled doesn't inspire prospects to consider your school. Winning does. Plus, winning repetitively starts to build a better mindset in teams as a whole. Getting crushed doesn't. Our home and home series we just finished with Tulsa was a step in the right direction, even though we lost both games. If I were AD, our first game of the year, every year, would be a home game against a I-AA team from Texas, Lousiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, or Florida. Those states have I-A teams that are in our conference - except Missouri, but Missouri's close enough to us to provide an opponent. Next, I'd do what we did this year, playing teams at the level of Tulsa and Akron. There are many teams out there like that. Never, would I start out the year on the road getting crushed on the road by Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, etc. It just doesn't make sense from a winning mindset standpoint. If you just want to make money, go independent, schedule eight games a year on the road against big time BCS teams. They're always looking for games. That's not what brings in recruits or fans, though. I think we're almost there. Get a I-AA for the opening home game and quit scheduling the giants - until we get better, ala K-State - and we'll get there sooner rather than later.
  24. Agreed. If the non-BCS folk would quit playing the BCS folk, things would change. Money is the crack rock of college football athletic directors, though. I'd like to see us schedule non-BCS types only. There are some good teams in the MWC, MAC, and WAC, enough to schedule...Bowling Green, Marshall, Colorado State, Air Force, Utah, Fresno State, etc. I like the Tulsa home and home we've done as well.
