Thinking of what a great hire this was again as I read about Pitt's new hire blowing up in its face in less than three weeks. Although, Pitt deserves all the bad it gets for running off Dave Wannstedt.
-
New head coach, former OU offensive coordinator and OL coach, Kevin Wilson New offensive coordinator, former Boise State OC, Brent Pease Those two have coached some explosive offenses over the past few seasons. How long will it take them to make the Hoosiers fly, if ever? I'll be more interested in this game than the game against Houston.

Erickson is in the same position Hawkins was this past season at Colorado - the school can't afford to buy him out, so he knows they're stuck with him. I imagine Wazzu is in the same boat since they kept Wulff after another horrible year. I expected both of those jobs to be open this season along with Miami, Colorado, Maryland, UCLA, and Georgia. Miami, Colorado, and Maryland did fire their coaches. For financial reasons - or reasons unknown - Arizona State, UCLA, Wazzu, and Georgia stayed put. I'm most shocked about UCLA and Georgia. With USC unable to bowl for two years, and having their scholies reduced, it seemed to me to be the perfect time to get a little ripple going the Bruins' way in the form of a new coach. Skippy led the Bruins to a perfectly crappy 4-8 record. The man is making Karl Dorrell look like Chuck Noll. I figure Richt is getting extra time at Georgia simply due to fact that he's been there for so long. Maybe their administration has looked at neighbor Tennessee and figured out that it sometimes does no good to part with longtime coaches. The Vols fans have got to be standing on their heads over the garbage their football team has put out over the past two seasons since they ran off Phillip Fulmer. I'd say Jones might take the Georgia job as well, if it opens up next year and he's still taking SMU bowling. Having been a quarterback and coach in Atlanta, the territory isn't wholly unfamiliar. And, nearby Florida is a fertile ground for speedy receivers and defensive backs.
-
June Jones will leave. I said earlier in the year that he'd get offers if he took SMU to back-to-back bowl games. It happened, and it happened. My guess is if Maryland had been on west coast instead of the east coast, Jones would have taken the $1.5 million raise. See what happens with Jones if a Pac-10 school comes calling. To run his offense, you need alot of speed and depth with speed. He'd have it in spades on the west coast; he'd be fighting for it on the east coast. Mark this prediction, too, Pirate Pushers - Mike Leach and his offense will garner no more championships in the ACC if he takes the Maryland job than he won in the Big 12...which was a big, fat zero. Jones and Leach have offenses that need tons of speed and deep speed. Florida, Texas, and California are about the only places they can consistently get it. Texas Tech and SMU aren't big enough draws naturally to recruits. Hook one of these guys up at a UCLA...the thing could really cook. The problem with Leach, though, is that he's got to someday get serious about the defensive end of the stick.

The scientists who push it are just whores. Politicians are now paying for that kind of research. If they started giving grants for global cooling, they'd all be whoring for global cooling. I've always been skeptical of a global warming. But, I'm even more skeptical of people who claim to be above the fray in the pursuit of putting more money in their pockets. Scientists aren't anymore above greed and lust for fame those in any other profession. The research dollar these days is driven by global warming theories, so that's where they get on the corner and show their gartered thighs - the hussies.

I voted no. I think we should play them. Southwest Texas was one of our longest rivals in the Southland Conference. I welcome any scheduling of them and New Mexico State. Throw in UTSA as well. I'd love to see the coaching chess match between McCarney and Coker. Both have national title rings and excellent reputations. I'd be interested into making a UTSA game an annual affair with Texas State, Tulsa, Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State sprinkled in every four years or so: Year 1 - @ UTSA, home Texas State Year 2 - home UTSA, @ Tulsa Year 3 - @ UTSA, home Louisiana Tech Year 4 - home UTSA, @ New Mexico State Year 5 - @ UTSA, home Tulsa Year 6 - home UTSA, @ Texas State Year 7 - @ UTSA, home New Mexico State Year 8 - home UTSA, @ Louisiana Tech I'm for any schedule that gives us a good, winnable, out of conference games whether at home or on the road.

Power Watch Update & Mailbag
The Fake Lonnie Finch replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I've long been a proponent of bringing in JUCOs to compete for the starting QB spot. And, I've questioned the wisdom of using Riley Dodge at QB at this level because its not 1983 with 250-270 defensive tackles and 52 defenses with outside linebackers playing defensive end anymore. But... I've got no problem with Riley going into spring ball as the #1 guy. Mike Canales actually built a game plan that helped Riley keep the team competitive. That is to say, Canales: (1) Recognized Lance Dunbar as the #1 threat and built the game plans around him, and (2) Threw in U-backs and tight ends to give more pass protection and pass options, thereby keeping defenses more honest about blitzing. I believe Riley can run Canales' offense. What I still question, though, is whether it is worth him taking the personal, physical risk. On the "private" board last year, I raised the same question. In the end, no amount of debate here will decide the answer. The answer will be made among Riley, his parents, his doctors, and his coaches. I'm not kidding, and never am, when I talk about Earl Campbell. Being old enough to have seen him play in person, it's awful to see him unable to walk these days. I know Riley isn't simply abused by football coaches too stupid to do anything but give him the ball - as Campbell's college and pro coaches were. But, it's just the continual injuries and variety of injuries to Riley that scare me. If everyone gives him the go, and he wants to do it, then I'm comfortable with him running Canales offense. But, his health will always be in the back of my mind. Thompson and the JUCO signee Osborn are good insurance. Osborn has 3 years to play 3. Even if he doesn't beat out Riley this year, he'll have plenty of time to contribute here as a starter in 2012 or 2013. To me, it's a positive that we now have some legitimate choices. I have a feeling we'll have even more come signing day, and am looking forward to it. -

Either way, I'm just excited to see two 3-star quarterbacks in Florida with offers from us! Coach Canales is really doing a job of getting our name out there. If we start pulling 3-star and better guys out of Florida, FAU and FIU will be glad to see us leave the Belt! To me, it's good enough now just to have our toe in the water. -

It wasn't so much of a fight, but we both wanted UNT to do well. Like many on the board, we all have a different opinion of how to skin the cat. We just all know we want it skinned. We now agree on how it's being skinned. There are a few holdouts. But, my guess is, once we start winning, no one will care what was said back in the dark days of 2005-2010. Those years will simply be the darkest hour before the dawn. -
...at all of the developments and whatnot over the past few weeks. I've been busier than a hound dog in room full of raccoons at work, but I've been trying to at least read up once a day. We've got an excellent coaching staff and they are landing some good recruits. I'm very pleased with this guy Bowen. The only downside is that we now have a coaching staff full of coaches young enough and good enough to be picked off by bigger fish year after year. Canales and Bowen are already legitimate potential head coaches. Mike Grant could develop into an offensive coordinator and eventually a head coach. What I love about Grant is his knowledge of the game is such that he's been able to coach - and coach well - on both sides of the ball. Grant's coached running backs, receivers, tight ends, linebackers, the secondary, and the special teams. Each unit he's coached has improved from their prior performances. He's also been a recruiting coordinator. It's difficult to quantify what having a pair like Bowen and Grant on the staff will do for recruiting. I mean, we'll see the results on the field in a couple of years. But, we've got guys with heavy ties into Big 12 territory as well as Texas. Canales picking off a QB from the Southeast already. Another lineman landed from California. I'm excited because I've always claimed this thing should be recruited the way OU and Nebraksa, and now Oklahoma State and Tulsa, have done it - looking anywhere and everywhere. As noted earlier in the year, Oklahoma State starts nine Texans on defense, and the other two are from South Carolina and Mississippi(? maybe Lousiana). I've loved the kids we've landed out of Louisiana and Mississippi with coach Gandy. I'm sad to see him leave, but excited about now having a coaching staff where every coach legitimately has a broad network of recruiting. A decade from now, people may be looking at UNT the way they now do at Iowa and Kansas State - as a place that great coaches developed before they became head coaches. It's all good these days, yo!

Juco Qb Commits

Aikman is the right call here. Both his high school and OU were run-based offenses. OU attempted to switch to an I-formation when they landed Marcus Dupree. He abandoned them in middle of the 1983 season, and they went back to an option attack. Aikman signed in 1984 and spent a year behind Danny Bradley - with Mack Brown as the offensive coordinator. OU had a shot at winning a national title that year, but lost to the Washington Huskies - who had Gary Pinkel as their offensive coordinator. The two former offensive coordinators from that game now battle OU in the Big 12-2. Anyway, Aikman got his chance to start in 1985. OU, although still mainly a run-based team, had a couple of pass catchers who later spent some time in the NFL - Derrick Shepard and Keith Jackson. Aikman broke his leg in the Sooners' only loss of the season to Miami. The offense was handed to true freshman Jamelle Holieway and OU switched back to the Wishbone option to accommodate his skill set. The Sooners won their remaining games and the national title. Switzer then helped Aikman transfer. A little known fact: Switzer even called new Texas head coach David McWilliams and told him he should call Aikman since the Longhorns - with Todd Dodge at QB - had begun to throw the ball more. Aikman chose UCLA, which isn't so shocking when you consider he was born in California and actually spent more of his childhood there in West Covina, a suburb about 20 miles from Los Angeles (think downtown Dallas to about the Richardson/Plano border in distance). At UCLA, of course, the offense was long a passing school. Aikman thrived and the rest is history. This kid who just committed, he's gone where he thought he'd best fit. You can't blame a kid for transferring if the offense doesn't fit his style. This board is full of ridiculous people who call 18 to 20 year old kids quitters because they transfer to other schools. It's absurd. If the coach who sold you one thing during recruiting is gone, and another comes in with a totally different scheme and way of doing things, there's no harm in a kid leaving. The kid and his family have only five years to play four. If things don't turn out as they were promised during recruiting - and, there is overselling in recruiting - then they have every right to leave without a bunch of old fatasses on computers questioning their commitment. Commitment is a two-way street. OU committed to the run, and in the process helped Aikman become a star passer when he transferred. This kid from Alabama, who also played in a run-based offense, went close to family in his first college commitment - to a coach who had a passing offense. I've got no beef with this kid. You're not going to get noticed in high school very often as a passer if you're handing the ball off 2/3rds of the time. He was a team guy back home and did his part. He wasn't one of these kids from a family that transferred him around to different high schools just to suit his needs. His local high school ran the ball and he played without complaining. A coach at Georgia Southern gave him a shot despite the offense not matching his high school offense. That coach left and so did he. No harm done at any level. Not even close. Quit pile driving what appears to be a good kid. He's got every right to use his college eligibility to his own advantage. He's been a good solider everywhere he's been. He's got three years to give us, and appears to have the arm strength of Derek Thompson. I'm all for that. The only knock I have on him is the same knock you could give half or more quarterbacks that age - he locks onto his primary target too often. You can do that in high school and lower divisions of college football. But, up here at FBS, there is too much speed in opposing defense to do that. Canales will have to break him of that. Welcome the kid aboard and be glad we've now a coaching staff with enough sense to recognize we needs some more quarterbacks in the arsenal. I'm plenty happy about this kid, and hope that Canales and McCarney land a couple more QBs before signing day. -
The news just keeps getting better! Although I'm not happy with the JUCO recruiting situation, I am happy that we are losing our high school look. As posted a couple of weeks ago, everywhere McCarney went to rebuild - Iowa, Wisconsin, and Iowa State - the logos were redone. Iowa and Wisconsin still use those logos. Iowa State's was changed within the last couple of seasons after McCarney left. But, the logo McCarney chose stayed there longer than any of their previous logos. Here's to hoping McCarney gets us as distinct a logo as Iowa and Wisconsin settled on in the late 70s and early 90s respectively. It's way past time for us to pick a logo and stick with it. Continuity is a big player in successful programs. Let's get some with our uniforms for a change.

Texas is crashing. Teryl Austin has been a DC for exactly one season. Surprised Texas didn't look for someone with more experience...especially as bad as their defense was this year.
-
Delaney: I think the only question is, 'Does one team's 12-0 and another team's 12-0 equate?' Exactly, butthole. And, the way to determine it is to have them play one another, not to exclude one because of conference affiliation. Greedy, cowardly bastards.
-
Agree. But, it's just money. Notre Dame may be making money off of their TV contract, but it hasn't translated into an overwhelming amount of wins. Texas makes more money than anyone in the country and they still went 5-7. At the end of the day, because it isn't professional, you still have to play the game with amateur kids whose heads may or may not be right with ball 100% of the time. And, at some point, the facilities just become an overkill anyway. In fact, maybe the problem at Texas and Notre Dame from a competitive standpoint is that their players now have too much given to them and it translates into lazier, less "hungry" players. I'm easily more impressed with TCU and Boise State (and, personally, Tulsa), to see where they have come over the past decade despite having a lot less than programs like Texas and Notre Dame. Money can only do so much. You've still got to line 'em up and play the game.

A Couple Of Thoughts On Junior Colleges
The Fake Lonnie Finch replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Is Hines still around? He recruited Louisiana and the SE region for 15+ years with La. Tech. Have I missed word on whether or not he's staying? -
No. If he did, he'd have already been hired. Canales and Bowen are still young. This is likely Nelson's last stop before retirement.
-
Probably true. The WAC tried 16 schools back in the day. It's too unwieldy. I hope for either a Big 12-2 invite. Or, joining up with the remaining Big 12ers once OU, Texas, and A&M bail out...which they will. Possibly this summer. Texas surely isn't happy that they didn't get their way. They should do everyone a favor and just go independent. The problem is, being independent with their own TV deal hasn't helped Notre Dame be more competitive. And, it likely won't help BYU either. The question is, where does Texas go for TV? It will have to be a BYU-like school controlled station because not enough people in America give enough of a crap about the Longhorns for them to sign with a network or even a major cable outfit. So, Texas...put your money where your big, fat mouth is. Step off the ledge into the world of the totally delusional. You'll be in good company there with Notre Dame and BYU.
-
My point has always been this something is more than nothing. That's why these guys take jobs wherever they can. Bowen surely wasn't going to sit at home making $0.00 as apposed to $71,000. Either way, he's future head coaching material. So far, we've got three legitimate guy who have been or who will be head coaches at this level - McCarney, Canales, and Bowen. And, that, my friends, is amazing considering we hired two high school coaches in 16 years. There's not a coaching staff in the Belt that will touch ours when this whole thing is finally built.
-
Screw Texas and OU and A&M. Let's say they all leave. The Big 12 doesn't automatically lose its AQ bid. That would leave - Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, and Iowa State. They could easily bump up to nine or ten by inviting us and another regional school or two that makes sense - Tulsa or Houston or both. (And, not just football-wise would this be cool - except Tech and Baylor, all of those schools have been good basketball traditions; and, Baylor is getting there) Yes, it's a dream, but screw waiting on the big players to move. Let's get big. We're now building and hiring big.
-
These hires are great! All BCS-quality guys. Bowen part of the Kansas program that climbed all the way to the Orange Bowl in 2007. McCarney with Florida. Canales with Arizona and ties to great coaches out west. This is a serious coaching staff. If they start winning big here, the sky is the limit on where we can go. Many here nitpick about which bigger small conference to join. But, if these are the types of coaches we can now draw, and we win and fill that stadium, forget about the MWC and CUSA...go straight for the Big 12-2. They are now short a couple of teams, and we are right in their geographic wheelhouse. And Big 12 pol Donnie Duncan attending for McCarney's hiring. Somebody pinch me!

Not exactly the same as this guy, but... http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/bigeast/2006-11-07-louisville-okoye_x.htm http://www.nfl.com/players/amobiokoye/careerstats?id=OKO541722 SMU also has that kid from Estonia who had never played football, but was a good field athlete. I think he's set the NCAA record for blocked kicks now. The great Walter Payton didn't play football until his junior year of high school. Then, he went to a small school for college. He did okay in the NFL later on as well, some would say. This current Chicago Bear didn't start playing until he was in junior college: http://www.nfl.com/players/johanasiata/careerstats?id=ASI059326 The thing is, if the article is correct, this is more than just signing a physically big kid and hoping he works out. Okafor seems to excel at sports where you also need coordination, like basketball, and strength and agility in track and field. I feel better about this kid than some of the risks we took under Dodge for guys who were just physically big, but never hit the playing field. I'm thinking of the JUCO OL from Mississippi who was a giant, but never played. Give me the "project" with athletic ability, not just some big kid. This kid Okafor sounds like he is already a willing worker on and off the field. How can we complaining about a kid who excels in the classroom and in whatever sport he attempts?
-
Stupid. The AD is the same one who ran Solich out of Nebraska and replaced him with Bill Callahan. During a rebuilding year this season, Wannstedt got Pitt a share of the Big East title. Amazing how stupid some of the "bigger" programs are.
