  1. As UNT fans we complain about the BCS colluding to keep non-AQ teams out of the national championship hunt. Isn't it hypocritical for us to take the same attitude about FCS schools getting into the non-AQ conferences? I think as many schools as possible should get into the FBS. The bigger the non-AQ portion of the FBS, the more alumni around the country have a vested interest in breaking up the BCS cartel.
  2. That's an argument for local TV markets mattering less, not TV in general. The TV deals are enormous and getting bigger with each passing year. TV is the biggest reason the BCS cartel was set up and the non-AQs are getting squeezed out.
  3. People keep saying that everyone on GMG was positive about the Dodge hire. It's not true. I went back and looked at those discussions. There was an outspoken group of people who thought it was a terrible idea to hire another high school coach (which has happened only three times since 1980 at the top college level).
  4. That's what the Champions League and FA Cup are for. The FA Cup is my kind of playoffs. Every team in British soccer, from the top all the way down to beer leagues, is eligible to win it.
  5. Has there been any talk about scheduling Texas State? I'd like to see Franchione and Dickey roll their team into that new stadium. Dickey's one of the reasons it got built.
  6. If Riley stayed, the best-case scenario is this: He starts at quarterback, leads the team to a great season and everybody uses that great season as "proof" that his dad isn't a good coach. That would be an uncomfortable position to be in. I would have liked to see him stay, but I can see why he'd be looking elsewhere.
  7. Fact of the story is he was under no obligation to stay. College scholarships are year to year. Schools can cancel them. Players can leave. This quitter BS is ridiculous. Did anyone call McCarney a quitter for leaving Florida? No. He had a better opportunity elsewhere, and Dodge thinks the opportunity is better at McNeese. That's his prerogative. Slamming him for it shows some pretty galling amnesia for what he did while he was here (and the injuries he suffered doing it).
  8. I hope Riley does well at McNeese State. It's a shame that some fans keep calling him a quitter. Players and coaches move around all the time in college football. If someone has a better opportunity elsewhere, we shouldn't be so hard on them for taking it.
  9. If that's all it was, do you really think Boise State would have joined? Getting an invite into a conference of the caliber of the MWC or CUSA is the good thing we're hoping to happen. Would you turn down a MWC invite in the hopes a CUSA invite might happen down the road? I wouldn't.
  10. My comment was just speculation. Riley Dodge's own dad moved him to wide receiver. He's been injured all the time playing QB for us, suffering a concussion, separated shoulder, severely sprained ankle, broken arm and compressed vertebrae. Considering those factors, I don't think McCarney was very likely to go into his first season with Dodge in the position. So if he did the decent thing and told him that, it could be the real reason Dodge left.
  11. What would make you think he had a chance to play quarterback here under McCarney? He's not stupid. He must have been told that it was unlikely to happen here, so he decided to look for the best FCS opportunity he could. Dodge carried himself with honor here and played hurt more than any UNT quarterback I can recall. I wish him the best at McNeese.
  12. Back during the stadium vote you conducted yourself here with a lot more class.
  13. The Mountain West would be a big upgrade for UNT. I'm not a Belt basher, but we'd be crazy not to take an invite if offered.
  14. Crap. My restraining order expired, didn't it?
  15. Helmet stickers only work for schools that have used them forever and have a tradition of accomplishment. For others, it just looks like they are overcompensating for something.
  16. When people say their comment is going to receive -1s, does anyone else find the red button irresistible? I apologize for any hurt I may have caused. To the person who negged me: I did not say my comment would receive -1s. You are cold, man.
  17. He's already making friends with the offensive line? Smart kid.
  18. Scholarships in football and other sports are year to year. http://blog.syracuse.com/orangefootball/2009/06/scholarships_are_renewed_on_a.html The school isn't making a four-year commitment to a player, so it's a bit ridiculous to expect a player to keep a four-year commitment to a school.
  19. Football scholarships are year to year, so a school can elect to drop a player after each season. For this reason, I think it's wrong to dump all over an athlete who decides to switch schools. Vizza and Dodge did not promise UNT they'd graduate from the school. If they elect to go somewhere else, then fans ought to respect that.
  20. A shame Riley isn't going to graduate from UNT, but he gave the Mean Green everything he had. I was kinda hoping he wouldn't be the quarterback again, though, because was getting killed out there. I was concerned for his health after football.
  21. Great system, innit? When a non-AQ team is good enough to compete for the national championship, BCS schools won't schedule them or even drop games against them. Then they claim the team never played anybody! Great win for TCU last night. That's one hell of a team, and I'd love to see them play Oregon or Auburn. Wisconsin should have run more, but TCU was a deserving Rose Bowl winner and ought to be a co-national champion.
  22. The traffic concerns seem overblown to me, given the location of the stadium right next to two major interstates. Is there a stadium in the FBS closer to major highways than ours?
  23. I've heard him on the radio several times talking about UNT over the years.
  24. I'm looking forward to some UNT/Texas State games also.
  25. I don't think any school has a better play-by-play announcer than George Dunham. But there is one beef I have with him -- he is too reluctant to ever offer constructive criticism of the current coach, either in broadcasts or on The Ticket. At some point you'd like to hear what he truly thinks when the wheels are off.
