DRC Monday column: New coach must unite fractured fan base
rcade replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Can you name a single college baseball player currently playing in Texas? I want baseball at UNT, but it would hardly be a replacement for football in terms of the attention it gets in the sports world. -
There was some awkwardness in how UNT announced that it had lit the tower green in solidarity with the people of France. Some people are upset that they also said it was for a UNT volleyball win over UTSA: https://twitter.com/OnlyAtUNT/status/665736019153543168

Everyone in Mean Green Nation has tried "hope for the best" as our approach for years. At some point, it becomes absurd to do the same thing and hope for better results. It's not true that we lack the final say. UNT is a public institution. Athletics is supported with public money. President Smatresk, AD Villarreal and every other employee at the school is beholden to the public. If their decisions do not reflect what we want, they can be held accountable for them. Part of their job is to be responsive to the public and other stakeholders of UNT.

DRC Monday column: New coach must unite fractured fan base
rcade replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
The only way UNT will have an overhaul off the field is to change the AD. After 14 years, there's no reason to believe that RV is capable of doing things differently, or that his top subordinates can change it either. We need new leadership that comes from a program where they know how to win and grow the fan base, booster club and donors. -
Is there a minimum number of days the head coach position must remain opening for hiring? Here's the job posting, which has an open date of Oct. 27: https://jobs.unt.edu/applicants/jsp/shared/frameset/Frameset.jsp?time=1447681516687

Question For @FlyOnTheWall Regarding Scheduling
rcade replied to greenit's topic in Mean Green Football
You go on and on like a bitter ex-girlfriend, but I don't remember us dating. It must've been when I was drinking too much at the Flying Tomato. Were you that girl who, looking back, had a suspicious amount of stubble? -

Question For @FlyOnTheWall Regarding Scheduling

RV bears responsibility for the level of ticket sales, donations and Mean Green Club memberships. Your comment isn't a defense of RV, it's an indictment.- 77 replies

Question For @FlyOnTheWall Regarding Scheduling
rcade replied to greenit's topic in Mean Green Football
I could accept one body bag game a year if the home OOC schedule wasn't so unappealing. There shouldn't be any five home game seasons or schedules that bring in teams like Bethune Cookman when our in-conference state rivals are getting Arizona State and Colorado State. -
What is the earliest date you think a UNT head coach could be hired?

After joining the Mean Green Club in 2006, I stopped giving money a few years ago. I got tired of funding so much losing, and on the rare occasion that I got a mailing from the athletic department, they got my name wrong. I could never get them to fix that stupid mistake. In all the years I was a member, I got one response from an athletics department employee to a communication I sent. In my experience, the athletic department under RV has been half-assed about sustaining relationships with long-distance alumni. All the marketing I got assumed I was attending games in person. I found my money and time better spent supporting the program outside of official channels. I contributed money to the student campaign to get the student athletic fee passed, for instance. If you think the exodus of long-time UNT fans will only amount to a couple thousand bucks lost, you might be out of touch with the common fan. All those empty seats at Apogee and the Super Pit should tell you something. The polls here running 90% or more for a change at AD should tell you something -- GoMeanGreen is full of people who have supported the school for decades, and we're as unhappy as we've been in the 13 years I've been a member. Yet none of this disgruntlement has rated a response from Smatresk or a response from RV that is anything other than weak excuses and a dismissal of critics. Did you know Fouts Field attendance sucked when he took over? He's still talking about that 14 years into his tenure, as if we should never raise our expectations despite the new stadium, athletic fee and coaching salary upgrades. I respect that you contribute big checks to the program. You don't seem to respect that we're a group of fans who matter too. You are a lot better at criticizing other fans than trying to persuade anybody that RV has a record as AD worth extending another 3-5 years with the hiring of a new football coach. Instead, you don't even think the school president should say anything to fans that might change minds. That boggles my mind. It's like you think there is zero requirement for accountability from Smatresk or RV. P.s. Since you brought my name into this, what's yours?
-
Saying nothing is not leadership. Letting RV publicly dismiss the criticism of long-time fans as a "minority" is not leadership. If you are hearing from a lot of people who think we're "idiots" for refusing to accept a decade of going 40-89 in football (113 out of 119 in FBS) and achieving little in men's or women's basketball, this is part of our problem. We apparently have an influential group of supporters who think failure is acceptable as long as we suck in new facilities. Your final comment suggests you want RV as AD for a long time. If that happens, you and the other big donors can look forward to funding an increasing portion of UNT athletics on your own. The rest of us won't be opening our checkbooks to reward mediocrity.

ESPN and SEC network make UNT the joke of college football
rcade replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
Given that we're ranked below 49 FCS teams in Sagarin ... http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/ ... I think the national perception of our program is that we wouldn't even be competitive at that level. -
Smatresk didn't respond to any emails sent after McCarney's firing about RV's job performance. There's no reason to believe he was willing to meet individually with fans. Some of you keep telling us we should keep our criticism inside the family and make it private instead of using banners and billboards. That was tried. It got nowhere. RV dismissed the concerns of unhappy fans as a "minority" -- even though the sentiment here is over 90% for a change at AD. You can keep clapping harder and hoping for the best. Good luck with that. I'm fed up with the acceptance of losing and I am not going to be shy about saying it, in every way possible to as many people as possible, until RV is out.

If this game was a job application for Chico God help us. Our offense laid an egg. Our defense played better, but it did not seem like Tennessee was trying. They were able to sleepwalk to a 24-0 skunking.
-
Until Dave Barnett just brought it up in the pregame, I didn't realize how close we are to the 40th anniversary of our victory over Tennessee. Hayden Fry took North Texas State to Tennessee's Neyland Stadium on Oct. 25, 1975, and won 21-14. Today's game is the first time they've had us back since that upset. Here's a recap: http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/110314aaa.html Does anyone here have memories of the game?

The Mean Green earn a paycheck today in the land of the checkerboard, country music and cousin marriage. What's the score going to be? We're a 41.5-point underdog, which is not the worst of the weekend. Kansas is a 43-point dog against TCU. Call me a crazy optimist, but I feel like we're going to cover today: TU 54, UNT 13

Please tell us more about how much you don't care. Posting as "UTSA Fan" with a Roadrunners logo and calling yourself one of "us" is an odd thing to do. You don't look like an us. You look like a them. That's all my comment meant.

Some of us are sick of watching UNT accept mediocrity, year after year. I challenge you to find an AD in the entire FBS who has been around a decade with a record like RV's in football and basketball. There is nothing shameful in saying "enough is enough" and carrying out a public campaign to urge a change. RV's a big boy who makes a lot of money -- the third-highest salary at UNT -- under the premise that athletic success is important to the university. If he can't handle tough job scrutiny or a call for his firing, he shouldn't have become an AD.

MGB: "Fire Rick Villarreal" banner flies in Denton

Pender was good on facilities. Players and fans alike were relieved after he introduced indoor plumbing. -

This board also had detractors who didn't like hiring a high school coach like Dodge and didn't like hiring a coach like McCarney with a losing record. I wasn't one of those people, because I was in hope-for-the-best mode, but to state we all loved the hires is not true. People who want a change at AD know that RV had some accomplishments, primarily in facilities. But the last 10 years is such a massive failure on the field in revenue sports that to leave him in place is to accept mediocrity. If the letter-writing campaign had not been ignored completely -- I'm not aware of a single letter to President Smatresk that got an actual response -- and RV had not publicly dismissed our concerns as a "minority" of fans, there might not have been a banner at all. -
I appreciate your fake concern for the donors, but as one of them I got everything I wanted from the banner. There also was the added bonus of pissing you off.
