  1. True. This link says he's married to "the former Kendall Deas."
  2. Interesting tweet from this hour from somebody claiming to be Meacham's nephew: "Doug is my uncle, and the report is false, he hasn't been offered the job."
  3. We drink at the computer.
  4. Yes. Here in Florida there's always a lot of speculation and reporting that turns out to be bogus before any hire.
  5. It's a shame that 3-year deals aren't more common. That makes a hell of a lot more sense for a G5 school than 5.
  6. Jacksonville University in Florida began a non-scholarship football program in 1998. I worked at the school that year and the sport was added because they wanted the minor boost in enrollment that would come from the players attending -- JU is an expensive private school that had only 3,000 students (3,700 today). JU played its games on a field surrounded by a raised grass berm with no seats. It was as low budget as college football could possibly be, and even today there's only a small number of bleachers built into the berm, as you can see on Google Maps: Link The school is now discussing whether to become a scholarship football program. A local news story had this amazing fact about current coach Kerwin Bell: I've never heard of a non-scholarship football team paying a coach this much. There are FCS head coaches who make considerably less than this. Todd Dodge's base salary at UNT was $180,000.

  7. Who wears another college team's gear just because they bought a ticket to one of its games? There's way too much uniform promiscuity going on within the UNT community. Dance with the one what brung you. The next UT grad who buys a UNT shirt just because he is attending a game at Apogee will be the first.
  8. Football is too violent a game according to many of the greatest athletes who played it and are now suffering early onset dementia and other problems associated with CTE. Jim McMahon is 56 and has early onset dementia. He doesn't remember the games he played in that legendary 1985 Chicago Bears season. Tony Dorsett has CTE too and is just 61.
  9. Could Patterson stop it if Meacham was offering that coach a promotion?
  10. You're living in the past. Football has changed because of CTE. You can't head hunt or do anything close to head hunting any more. This isn't the era where those hits always get you celebrated on SportsCenter. It's the one where they get you flagged and ejected. The refs who tossed Carlos watched replays. The call wasn't a mistake. It's how they enforce the rules today. If you love the game you should welcome the new rules. CTE is an enormous health problem and there's new stories all the time making the case that football is too dangerous for young people to play. The latest story is that Frank Gifford had it. Here's a brain scan an 18-year-old who suffered multiple concussions in football and already had CTE: http://www.bu.edu/cte/our-research/case-studies/18-year-old/ Football players have to adjust how they hit to protect each others' brains. Refs will use penalties and ejections to enforce this.
  11. Doug Meacham: Mark Metcalf (Animal House, Twisted Sister "We're Not Going to Take It" video): An early transcript of Meacham's first speech to the team has leaked:
  12. If North Carolina wins the game, it will be their first ACC championship since 1980. This would be terrible timing for him to announce a move.
  13. It wouldn't make sense to tell the outgoing seniors early. That's more people who could leak it, and they don't have a direct stake in the decision like the returning players. I am guessing the players being told are all experienced players coming back.
  14. It doesn't make her more of a UNT fan to wear UH gear. Do the right thing: Buy her nothing but UNT gear for Christmas, for this and successive holidays, until she gets with the program.
  15. The longer we keep RV, the more we tie the new coach to a dysfunctional and under-performing athletic department. Fans who are excited about the new hire, whoever it turns out to be, should be concerned about whether RV will hurt his chance to succeed. Put RV in another position and begin the search for a new AD the day after this hire.
  16. Not sure what you mean here. McCarney was the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at Florida when hired by UNT. Florida met all of your criteria for national relevance.
  17. I agree with you that some of the comments about Harris were over the line. He's not going to prison because he got ejected from a football game and reacted childishly. But he just shot himself in the foot, as far as career aspirations go. He could have ended his playing career on a high note and been remembered primarily for the receiving numbers he piled up. Instead, he'll be remembered best for the head-hit stunt and what he did on the way out of Apogee. There are going to be Mean Green alumni in the field he pursues after graduation. There also will be people who look him up on Google. This stunt isn't going to help him. Like many of us at his age, the guy still has some growing up to do.
  18. Nobody questions wearing gear for another school you attended. You get a pass. But when I went to UNT there were more students in UT and A&M gear than UNT gear. That got on my nerves. I love Derek Football, so I am not going to give him any grief for wearing the gear of his future siblings-in-law. As long as he only did it once. And he felt sick inside.
  19. Carlos posted his illegal hit on Twitter 23 minutes ago and retweeted people praising it: https://twitter.com/CarlosDHarrisJr Before the game:
  20. That call wasn't questionable. He left his feet.
  21. Yes. It would deny the world the sight of his silky midnight black head of positive thinking hair.
  22. Derek Football's fiance Mandy Hardin has responded:
