  1. How does this not bite young Travis in the butt come NFL draft time? Jackson State has had one player drafted the past 20 years. The last big-time NFL player it produced was Jimmy Smith, a second round pick of Dallas in 1992 who became the best wide receiver in Jaguars history (and perhaps forever given how my local team drafts these days). Yes, the FCS does produce some draft picks each year but he won't be honing his skills against the best.
  2. G. Brint Ryan is a UNT alumnus who received bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting with an emphasis in taxation. He's donated $1 million to the athletic department and $30 million to create a business school -- the largest donation in school history. https://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/news/2019/02/04/university-of-north-texas-gets-biggest-gift-ever.html Dammit. I knew I should have majored in accounting with an emphasis on taxation.
  3. They claim to have begun in 1926 on their official website: https://studentaffairs.unt.edu/talons The same claim turns up in the North Texan: https://northtexan.unt.edu/archives/f03/downthecorridor.htm And on this UNT Facebook video: https://ms-my.facebook.com/northtexas/videos/unt-talons/151483216673783/ I looked for a history that explains the 1926 origin, but couldn't find one. I found another North Texan article that appears to agree with you that today's Talons had nothing to do with the 1920s social club and originated in the 1950s: https://northtexan.unt.edu/content/down-corridor-talons-swap-stories-egyptian
  4. Michelle Beadle went there. It's why, despite the strong physical attraction, our romance could never work.
  5. RoboCop is a classic. It's set in a future dystopic Detroit but was actually filmed in Dallas. Familiar places make cameos all over the movie, including the Starck Club and City Hall.
  6. What a legend of Texas journalism. Began at the Waco Tribune-Herald in 1943 and didn't retire until 1993. Saved the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Led the Football Writers Association of America. Became a big name in Texas football that will extend far past his lifetime. Won a Bronze Star.
  7. Our comments here have persuaded the NCAA to treat a fake slide like a real slide. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/32835751/fake-slide-pitt-kenny-pickett-blown-dead-new-ncaa-rules-interpretation New NCAA memo:
  8. Which fan base will your children will be raised in?
  9. Bowl games have increased from 15 in 1980 to 25 in 2000 to 42 this year. This trend tells me that bowls are making money for somebody. ESPN loves bowls so much it runs 17 of them (18 if they're handling the Frisco Classic). If they weren't profitable they wouldn't keep growing, and all that growth is in minor bowls.
  10. That little girl swore revenge and grew up to be CUSA commissioner. And now you know the rest of the story. Good day.
  11. The Talons are still around and turn 100 in five years. Here's the group's Twitter account: https://twitter.com/Talons23
  12. Here's a better link without the Google AMP junk in the URL: https://sports.yahoo.com/current-former-hawaii-players-allege-mistreatment-and-abuse-under-coach-todd-graham-055929891.html
  13. If he had another intent he could have explained himself in another tweet. He didn't. He also didn't apologize. I think it's fair to judge him by his words, which were bigoted and made UNT look bad.
  14. The forecast for the Frisco Bowl could be as low as 50 degrees at kickoff with a 31 percent chance of rain. There's no way UTSA can play in those conditions.
  15. Chris Cavalaris - wide receiver Jack Torrance - novelist
  16. Brian Shane - tight end Matthew Gray Gubler - actor
  17. Henry Beckett - kicker Jon Favreau - actor/director
  18. Those Hayden Fry years were my first exposure to UNT football. I can remember finding them on some random channels while in elementary school in Richardson in the 1970s and hearing the dulcet tones of Bill Mercer calling the games. Flying Worm forever!
  19. Before the vaccine, polio paralyzed 15,000 Americans a year -- mostly children. After the vaccine, it was eradicated to the point that the last polio case to originate in the U.S. was in 1979. Would you prefer there be no vaccine?
  20. Hayden Fry's North Texas teams never got a bowl invite despite going 8-3, 7-4, 10-1 and 9-2 from 1975-78. In 1977 they beat Louisiana Tech 41-14 and finished 10-1. A week later Louisiana Tech got an Independence Bowl invite despite finishing with the inferior record of 8-1-2.
  21. CFL quarterbacks drop like flies. I think Mason Fine will get an opportunity there.
  22. I don't see how a fake slide is even possible under the existing rules. If the quarterback does something like a slide, it's a slide. Motive doesn't matter. If a quarterback looks like the Keep On Truckin' Guy running down the field, it's a slide.
  23. Keep those tickets. You get to see Punt God.
  24. I don't have the time to become a college-aged elite athlete. I did have an hour to go to CVS and get the shot.
  25. A fake slide should be treated the same as a real slide. The quarterback appeared to give himself up and is down at that point.
