We bonded there as Mean Green fans and joined GoMeanGreen 11 days apart in 2002. Brett loved sports and a good argument (as many of us here can attest). He collected jerseys and donated Cody Spencer's Blue-Grey game jersey to the UNT Hall of Fame in 2009. Spencer played so well in the game he was drafted in the sixth round by the Raiders. I thought every single person in El Paso attended the game to see UNT deliver a beatdown.

The writing was OK for a college newspaper story, but where are the quotes? The reporter didn't talk to any players or coaches.

Does anyone know if Stadium will offer this game on demand or repeat it? I missed the third quarter when the magic happened.

Excellent retort, but Bill grew more gruff and hilariously unenthusiastic with the press over time. Early Bill smiled and wore comfy sweaters.

The value of press conferences are to get the fan base pumped up and give sportswriters something interesting to say about the upcoming game. Nobody expects a song-and-dance routine from the head coach but it's nice when they make it seem like their job is fun as hell and they can't wait for kickoff.

Taking a W home from the Sun Bowl would be a big deal but let's not get carried away. Last time I checked the season has more than one game.

I got dragged to a play at UNT in the late 1980s and Mister Peppermint (Jerry Haynes) was acting in it. Aside from being an SMU graduate, he was a legend. And he fathered the frontman of the Butthole Surfers.

If SMU wants to dominate NIL spending they should focus on lacrosse or polo. They have no hope of outspending the big P5s in the long run or even short run. Headlines they get from NIL spending are like Dave Parker becoming the first athlete to make $1 million a year. That was a shocking milestone for around 10 minutes.

I'm impressed by what UTEP and the El Paso community are doing to hype the season opener. It will make coming home with a W all the sweeter. Even though DFW has more competition for fan attention, it would be nice to see Denton come together to promote a Mean Green game like this.

Their sport is amateur in name only. They became too profitable to ignore the elephant in the room -- all the other people getting paid. Fans who miss the era of amateur college athletics have a lot of other sports to follow other than football and basketball. I got a chance to see some women's college softball conference tournament games at UF this summer and they were great.

I think any student at a G5 who cares about football or basketball knows that their school is paying coaches (and now athletes) bigger money through outside sources, not through student service fees. Maybe the ones who don't support sports will be mad when they see some athletes are getting NIL money, but those students are usually too anti-sports to pay any attention at all. My sons are all in college at UF and UCF, and because I failed them as a parent they don't pay attention to their football teams at all. None of them know what NIL is.

I don't see how it could be about anything other than getting an athlete to come to a school and keeping him from leaving it to go someplace else. You don't want to talk about coaching salaries but when the top coaches are pulling down $10 million a year, that tells every top college football and basketball player that other people are making crazy money so why shouldn't you? And if you can't get crazy money, maybe you can at least have some nice-clothes, nice-car, make-it-rain money?

I could see NIL slowing the trend of players leaving before their eligibility is fully used up if they are projected as an NFL late-rounder. Especially those who might not get drafted at all, like a player whose name rhymes with TeAndre Dorrey. It's a crying shame somebody convinced him to give up his final game when his chance of being drafted was not assured.

I'm confused. In what scenario are student service fees for athletics going to be making direct payments to players? NIL is about outside entities -- companies, boosters pretending to run companies, Ken Hitchcock impersonator Rick Villareal -- paying players. The growing money monster in college athletics isn't because of student funding. It's because live sports on TV generates crazy amounts of money. Before NIL, that money was flowing to everybody except for athletes.
