  1. I think it would be great if Dodge ended up as an OC at a big school and did a great job there. But I think his reputation in the college ranks is wildly overblown. What has he done to earn respect in the college coaching community? He's a great high school coach, but that's a completely different animal than leading a college program. Dodge's failure here should cement that conventional wisdom.
  2. That is an awesome quote by Riley. One of the best I can recall from a player in the press.
  3. "North Texas fired coach Todd Dodge on Wednesday, declaring its decision to put a high school coach in charge of a Division I program a failure after 3½ dismal years." -- CBS Sports "UNT pulled the plug when it became apparent the gamble was a complete failure." -- Brett Vito, Denton Record Chronicle
  4. Hiring a permanent coach at midseason would make UNT a laughingstock in the sports media. Neither Jim Leavitt nor anyone else with decent job prospects would agree to that.
  5. No kidding. I would take 14 winning seasons with some sub-par opponents over the massive streak of suck we've been on since the late Dickey years.
  6. Is there any chance the coaching change will cause UNT to dump the Southlake Carroll-looking uniforms and go back to something more traditional with the right shade of green?
  7. Bower led Southern Miss to 14 straight winning seasons and bowl games for 10 out of 11 years. I think he'd be a damn good hire.
  8. I love Georgio, but if people didn't know the program was "way down" back then, a big reason was that he always wants to be the Mean Green coach's pal.
  9. I'm glad that UNT made this move. I was afraid that Dodge would be given the coaching equivalent of a medical redshirt because of all the injuries this season. It's a shame he didn't succeed here, because for the most part he seems like a good guy and a worthy representative of the school. But wins matter, and no coach in UNT history has found it harder to get them than Dodge. I don't think Canales should be considered for the full-time gig after this season. UNT should hire a name coach who has proven he can win at this level of football and will get the media and DFW excited about the Mean Green.
  10. He's not gone, though. RV could still decide to keep him despite the seven-win ultimatum.
  11. I appreciate your loyalty to Coach Dodge and your son's commitment to UNT, but I can't share your belief that this team is a "proven" winner robbed of those wins by injuries. We didn't hire Dodge just because he's a good representative of the program and appears to have good character. He was hired because he won ballgames. He hasn't done that here. He's never won as many games as Dickey did in the season that got him fired (3). I'd prefer that the next crop of Micah Mosleys who enroll at UNT have the chance to experience some on-field success instead of year after year of Bottom 10 failure. Your son and the other players currently at UNT deserved better than four years of misery while Dodge learned on the job. Hiring a high school coach as head coach of a college is a colossal mistake that ought to never be repeated. I'm ready to see Dodge fired and a well-known coach with a proven history of wins open up the new stadium.
  12. I can't recall Dodge ever saying anything in public that reflected poorly on UNT. If you combined his attitude with Dickey's results, he'd be opening up the stadium next year and we'd all be expecting great things.
  13. I only brought it up because people keep talking about what a class act Dodge is.
  14. It doesn't happen that often. Schools usually honor the commitments, particularly at programs like UNT that struggle in recruiting. I challenge you to look at Dodge's first recruiting class and tell me there wasn't room for this athlete. But even if you buy the premise that it is a common practice, Dodge didn't call the kid or his parents. The kid's coach had to call repeatedly to find out. It was a completely sorry-ass move.
  15. People who think Dodge has always been classy at UNT need to read about the Dickey recruit whose scholarship was not honored. The kid didn't even get a call from Dodge. His coach is still pissed off about it. When Dodge goes back to high school where he belongs, I hope their teams meet.
  16. The team gave up in the second half against Army. They've played better since then, but to suggest they've never thrown in the towel is inaccurate in my estimation.
  17. George Dunham played the we were just six points away from two victories card in the postgame interview with Dodge. I know Dunham tries to be kind, but it's a loser's mentality. Making Dodge respond to that rationalization for failure is sad.
  18. I don't think he will resign. Between the stadium and his son's two more years of eligibility, he has big reasons to stay if RV decides to keep him on. He woudl have a great Texas high school job waiting for him any time he quits, no matter how things are at UNT.
  19. What's embarrassing about that? Would you prefer it if RV didn't give a shit?
  20. We still lost by 24 to Troy and 27 to Louisiana-Monroe last year. In Dodge's first two years, we lost 10 games by 30 points or more, including games to Florida International, Troy (twice), Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic. It is the worst run in school history, which is why he entered this year needing 7 wins.
  21. Maybe, but would you hold it against him if a defender dropped an easy pick? It all evens out in the end. You can't credit him for zero turnovers when there was one pick.
  22. No. We're a bad team, but the media hasn't been feasting on us this year because we're not losing as badly as we did in Dodge's previous seasons.
  23. All this go-for-2 talk is nuts. If Dodge had done that and we failed, he and UNT would be a national laughingstock in the media. We had all the momentum going into overtime after scoring two touchdowns. Our kicker was not injured. We were at home. No coach would go for 2 in that situation.
  24. Auuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh!
  25. This win is great. I predicted a victory because I had a feeling the team was better than its 0-3 record. But how about we wait until Dodge has won two conference games in a row -- something he has never done -- before declaring this team is on the right track and all the doubters are wrong?
