You had me up to this point. But I hate the idea that UNT shouldn't go for a big name because someday he will leave us. That reeks of insecurity. There are times in your life when you should go for somebody who is out of your league. I did, and my wife hasn't figured it out for 23 years and counting.

It's hard to believe that any UNT alumnus would be offended by Coach Canales and his wife lobbying hard for the UNT job.

We don't know that. It's great that Canales and his wife are fighting hard for the job, but we can't assume that he's the only one who would do that. UNT settles too quickly in coaching hires. We have a new stadium and a not-too-distant run of success in our conference. We are in a major media market in a football-mad state. These are selling points that make us attractive to coaches. I'm OK with Canales being considered, particularly if he wins two more games, but we are not the ugly stepsister of the FBS anymore. We should weigh our options.

They are probably the worst FBS team in the past five years. They may eventually put things together at this level, but for now they are so hopeless UNT fans feel sorry for them. Seven people voted down my comment, but none of them gave a rebuttal. Canales will not fill seats. He will not excite the media or casual fans. It would be a mistake to hire him as head coach when name coaches are out there looking for an opportunity.

I can't believe so many people are jumping on the Canales bandwagon after a win over Western Kentucky, the most beatable team in the Sun Belt. It's great that we won and the players got a much-earned chance to revel in victory, but let's not go crazy here and make UNT think Canales deserves the full job without looking at better known, more accomplished alternatives. It was WKU.

Canales does not deserve a shot. He does not have enough of a name to generate excitement. The next coach has to be someone with experience winning at this level who is well-known enough to excite fans and the media. We have a new stadium to fill.

I'm surprised you have to ask. Coaches should follow the same rules they expect of their players and keep their hands to themselves. No slaps, facemask pulls, helmet slaps, nada. The fact that football is a violent game does not excuse violence around the game. Coaches expect their players to be disciplined. They should expect it of themselves.

Yes. There's no justification for a coach physically assaulting a player. I am glad UNT is considering Leavitt, but that doesn't mean we should act like what he did was OK. It was a huge mistake and I hope he's learned from it.

That run of success is a big reason why we got the athletic facility upgrades. I don't think students would have ever supported a new stadium without the Dickey years. To suggest it didn't help "one bit" is nuts. It's amazing what some people are posting here lately. Are we running a contest for the most uniformed post of the month and nobody told me?

The coach-in-waiting situation is a pain. It helped divide the Florida State fan base for years before Bowden finally was driven into retirement.

Yeah -- we're horrible people for wanting the losingest coach in UNT history to be replaced. If all you care about is character building, instead of wins and losses, let's hire Mister Peppermint to coach the team.

One of the things I liked about Jimmy Johnson's coaching was that he rejected bad luck and other excuses for losing. You make your own luck. Dodge never won more than two games a season here, and he didn't have excessive injuries in seasons one to three. It can't all be blamed on luck.

Since Todd Dodge is from Port Arthur, that probably colors West's view of the firing. I think he'd be unhappy no matter when Dodge was let go.

I think we should consider Leavitt, but the litigation has to be over before he signs a contract with UNT. We should not take the PR hit of new information coming forward during litigation.

Why does Tommy Bowden never get mentioned? He was a good coach at Clemson. He has a name that would attract attention.

I can accept pool parties. But I thought Georgio took it too far when he rubbed pumice on DD's corns in the locker room after practice.

Dunham's a great announcer, but one of his flaws is that he's extremely reluctant to criticize the current coach. If he really took shots at the UNT fanbase, he needs to stop bogarting the bong. He knows better than anybody that Dodge's tenure was a disaster on the field.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't care what kind of man the next coach is as long as he wins lots of games without cheating.

You do? Hindsight is 20/20, but I think he might have had a better shot if he realized his staffing mistake earlier. UNT in his first year showed some promise, particularly on offense.

You are too emotionally invested in Coach Dodge. I could understand that when he was still the coach, because you were showing loyalty to the school, but he's just a coach. They get hired to get fired. He knew that the day he arrived. The answer to your question is that most of us so-called "Dodge haters" will not freak out if he comes back and does well with a new team. But if UNT does well under the next coach, Dodge's woes will be forgotten and people will remember how he handled himself.
