  1. You know what would be even better than worrying about catching teams when they are beatable? Being good.
  2. Saw this coming the second he was named comish. And in light of this, if UNT has the opportunity to any other FBS conference... I'd take Ponderosa's advice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIBtkVq5ujY
  3. This is probably true. I lived right in the middle of in Nashville, and I honestly never once gave a thought to, or had a conversation about anything related to MTSU athletics. And I'd have never driven to Murfreesboro to casually attend any sporting event (unless they were playing UNT). I did, however attend a handful of Vandy events. I can't say the same about UNT, because I'm not an unbiased observer of my time spent living in DFW. However, I don't know many people that really cared one way or the other about UNT in any capacity (and that includes a lot of alums). Always a challenge to get people up to Denton for anything. Living in Houston, I can say UH did create a big stir around town during their run this past year. It was infectious, and I went to a few games (I'm an unabashed UH lookie loo). But again, I have no way of knowing if DFW would do the same for UNT, as we've never done anything of note or worth celebrating. I do know that I'd welcome a lot more lookie-loos to the UNT fold.
  4. I mean seriously, it's clear how lowly we are thought of in the world of College Football. We aren't even discussed as a possible addition to ANY conference by anyone, outside of college football forums. There are now 7 BCS teams in Texas, and we aren't one of them. Which means we are now one of three other teams in the state currently playing FBS football that aren't in a major conference. Which means seven other teams will have first crack at every single recruit in this state, plus the hosts of schools surrounding Texas that regularly recruit the hell out of our backyard. What can we offer a FBS student above and beyond anyone in DFW, much less the rest of Texas? We aren't the best academically. We aren't in a good conference. We don't have a rabid fan base. We don't have the finest location in the state... I mean, what is there that UNT offers that bests the rest, in the mind of a college recruit? This last batch of realignment seems to have really screwed us. ASSUMING all things remain as they are... which we all know is subject to change... what's the bright side? What is there to be excited about? Being better than UTSA and Texas State? Who cares. Feel free to delete this if you think it will negatively affect recruiting more than the Sun Belt/WAC talk already does.
  5. It would certainly cost a lot less. and hey, we could win a national championship!
  6. If they actually do expel all these kids, I applaud it. I'm so tired of sports teams- and specifically, colleges- ignoring their values and principles in the name of wins and the almighty dollar.
  7. It's just a reflection of the rest of our society. Dec 21, 2012 can't get here soon enough.
  8. What becomes of the brokenhearted?
  9. A large reason the breed accounts for so many fatalities is the assholes who raise the dogs to be aggressive. So I think it's probably hard to say whether the breed is genetically prone to being aggressive or if the gross number of fatalities is merely a function of it being a breed with a great number of owners that train them to be terrible. Anyways, this debate is a lot like trying to argue politics- everyone already has an opinion that is likely deep-rooted therefore unlikely to change. You like dogs? Yeah, I like dogs.
  10. The Texans are building a team that will be good for a long time. People can keep marginalizing the Texans' season all they want, but the Texans have played good games against the Colts with shitty teams in the past. No reason to think this defense wouldn't have gotten to Peyton The Christ either. There aren't a lot of teams that are equipped to make a deep run in the playoffs after losing their first and second string QBs, missing one of the best WR's in the league for half the season, starting the season without one of the best RBs, and losing an all-pro DE for more than half the season. Yates did win the game at Cincy to clinch the Division. That was big time. And he played another great game in the teams first home playoff game. That shouldn't be discounted. In the end, they didn't win at Baltimore (which was an especially frustrating game because you felt like they really could have come away with that one). But still, give credit where credit's due.
  11. Eh, it's a big decision. I don't blame a kid for wanting to make sure he's making the right one. Who knows? Maybe visiting La Tech will strengthen his commitment to UNT.
  12. Yes indeed! Sounds good to me, good sir. Have you been to Downing Street in Houston? It's a nice whiskey/scotch/cigar spot. And I'm really intrigued and terrified of the Wild Turkey/Rumpleminz concoction. I'm fairly certain Fry Street ruined that peppermint horror for me some time ago.
  13. Exactly. Big business in this country is such a double-edged sword. And it's made it clear it will sh*t on nostalgia and tradition in the interest of bottom lines and profit margins, almost every singe chance it gets. This is just one example. College athletics is another.
  14. After a first-game drubbing at the hands of Lake Travis, Dodge marvels at the speed of players in the 25-4A district...
  15. Agreed on all accounts. This was the best team and the best-coached team in the nation. And I don't know why everyone hated watching this game so much! After watching all the arena-style track meets that preceded, I thought it was refreshing watching a dominant defense control every aspect of the game. Alabama almost played a perfect game (sans a pair of misses by the kicker and one late penalty for offsides). This was truly a spectacle and a clinic that Saban put on for all to behold. There will also be much debate about why Miles stuck with that bum at QB instead of bringing in the guy that kept them in the title hunt most of the season while the other dealt with self-imposed legal issues.
  16. Along with 60% of the rest of college football and 33% of the Sun Belt...
  17. While it occasionally seems sad how excited we get about "good" players coming to our "not-so-good" conference, this is a nice get for ASU or whatever, assuming it pans out. Even the SEC aka "The Greatest Conference in the History of Ever America to Infinity" was abuzz over the Cam Newton deal. This kid's a game-changer at the position. Excitement isn't without merit.
  18. Yeah, but how would they be *without* the MOB?
  19. When you can throw for 314 yards against us (only Rice and UAB's D gave up more against Tulsa) and 3 TDs, you needn't run it much at all. But like you said, shoring up that secondary is key. OSU and BSU both did a great job of keeping Tulsa's pass game in check. To me, that starts with getting more pressure on the QB, too.
  20. I'm not sure I understand the relevance of the location of SJSU. Who cares about SJSU besides SJSU alums? If you're a casual fan in that area, wouldn't you root for Stanford? Same for UTSA. I suspect most that haven't any connection to the school root for the Longhorns. There's history on their side, as is the case with Stanford. Oh sure the games would be fun now and then (I'll go to just about any college football game), but in the long run, SJSU and UTSA are going to be in an afterthought conference. I just don't buy all this "they're located near a major market stuff" anymore. So are we and it's never meant a thing. So is UH. So is Rutgers. So is FAU, FIU, et al. Again, nothing. Sure, there's an occasional fun year for fans of these major-market state schools, but none of these schools ever transcend side-show to powerhouse. It's a strange phenomenon in college sports.
  21. The possibility of winning a Superbowl could be a factor. Playing in a prolific offense could be another.
  22. The idea that a recruit or transfer bases where they continue their football career on a college's non-affiliated, third-party message board should also be taken out back and shot.
