UNT Party in Austin on Friday the 29th!
Eagle1855 replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
In it to win it. +several. It's on. Can't get here soon enough. -
I had some thoughts on this, then I shot them all down as I wrote out my reply. So I arrived at: I really don't know. Unless LP is kicking in some extra cash (or ticket prices are substantially higher), it doesn't seem to make much sense, as Neyland holds about 30k more people than LP Field.

It's remarkable how many errors have been found in such a short time in an article that is by all accounts fairly brief. But I'm sure they have a pretty good read on how this game will go for Texas.

I'm pretty sure that game was played in Austin, the next week. It was at Columbus in 2005. Because it was VY on the way to the Rose Bowl.

MGB video: McNulty, Greer discuss their QB battle
Eagle1855 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
To be fair, Texas probably didn't offer a lot of the players Baylor used to kick their ass in, last year. So who cares. This is a non-issue. -

Accidental -1. My bad. New lap-top. Accidentally gave someone a +1, earlier. I'm new to the internet. But I gave this comment a +1 so you're back to even.

And my answer is: San Antonio. New market. Which trumps all of these. Because they already have the D/FW market locked down without UNT. We learned that with our treatment by the DMN. And if by some stretch of the imagination, SA ends up with an NFL team, I figure it makes even more sense. But all of this is moot because there isn't a program that has the clout or cache to enhance the profile of the Big XII in Texas. If there was, it would have already been added.
-
Assuming they ever did look to add 2 Texas schools and UH is a forgone conclusion for one of the spots, why would they take UNT instead of UTSA?
-
Not to be a downer, but moving to the Big 12 is all but an impossibility. We've got a better chance of getting into the SEC than we do the Big XII (and I'd put that at close to zero, too). The Big XII has absolutely no use for another Dallas-area school. If they expand again, the only Texas schools with an honest shot is UH. The Houston market will be in contention at some point, and the SEC already has a strong hold on it, with LSU and A&M fanbases well-represented. This is a bad day for UNT sports. But I do hope we kick the fire out of Texas on the 30th. For some reason, that feels like our best response.

At a detriment to TV contracts, I'm sure. Which bring in far more than a slight bump in attendance.

Would you say that if RV was making a killing for the Mean Green in Asia? I'm not being contentious. At least, that is not my intent. I can't say I would care. There's nothing that says he can't do this, that he can't treat the AD as a business, marketing it across continental lines. It's all a game, and this guy endeavors to play the game as well as he can, make as much for the university as is possible. Personally, I'm not a fan of it. But the system allows for it. And if the system allows for it -- and we agree it isn't good for the sport -- bitching and moaning about Patteron is a waste of time/forest for the trees. The system needs to be changed. And that's above even Patterson's pay grade. Another question: What is stopping UNT from doing the same thing?

Honestly: Is he saying anything we didn't already know? Do "haves" have a responsibility to distribute the wealth they generate to the "have-nots?"

I thought this was a good article on the subject: Autonomy 101

Mutha-scratchin' Schedule Nerds
Eagle1855 replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm not saying we can have only one "main" rival, I'm saying we're the Texas Tech of the non-P5 world: we have several rivals and none of them consider it as big a rivalry as we do. -

Didn't say that either. My only interest was Texas State because they also do not have a current FBS rival, having left SHSU in FCS. They start a series with UTSA (I assume that's Craphole?) in 2018 that then continues from 2021 on. So they have a really good understanding of how to build and maintain rivalries. We don't. We never have. Which is why we're everyone's afterthought in the State of Texas. No one hates North Texas because no one cares. But I'm sure that Army series will get heated. So we'll cross our fingers on that. -

Exactly. Rice already has a rival. It's never going to change. It goes back long before any of us watched football. Nowhere in my post did I suggest replacing those opening games with a Texas State. I suggested replacing a game like Army with an actual in-state program that could be considered a rival -- and has been in the past. Keep the opening games against P5 conference teams. And find some that are mid-level P5 teams that are willing to do 1-and-1 or 2-and-1 deals (like KSU). -

Not sure the two are related. But I am sorry that my goals aren't high enough Which is your favorite rivalry that we enjoy at UNT? And try to pick one where the other team actually considers us a rival. -

I don't think i meant that we "had" to in the sense that it is an imperative for the continued success of our program, just meant that it makes a lot of sense. Was pointing out that we have historically played them more than any other team. We lament a lack of rivalries. SMU has a rival in TCU and by conference default, UH. Rice has UH. MTSU has WKU. We have no sole rivalry we can point to. We compete with Texas State for the same recruits. We are a similar institution. We just lost to an upstart-team in San Antonio. I'm not sure what delusional world our fans are living, with respects to UNT's place in the college football world. I don't think there's a thing wrong with playing a Sun Belt program in our non-conference schedule. Especially one in the Austin area. -

Agreed. And I was one of the ones who was happy with the deal when it was put in place, for reasons you mentioned. But I think we've got to find a way to get Texas State on the schedule in the future. We've played them more times, historically, than any other program. And it's one rivalry in which we actually hold a significant advantage in the all-time record. Hooray. -

Am I the only one that would gladly trade a home and home series with Army for the a long-term home and home series with Texas State (ideally alternating home/away with our UTSA home/away games)? Having SMU and Texas State on the schedule every year, along with UTSA and Rice, seems like a great way to remind the entire state we're here, while building lasting rivalries. -

So we're at Iowa and at Tennessee in 2015? I mean, I realize this isn't ideal for scheduling purposes (as I think we're also @SMU) but those are fun road games. Knoxville is a fine town. And I've always wanted to visit the U of Iowa (which I guess is strange). -

TCU to play Ohio State in a home and home

It's this. Didnt the Big 10 (Or whatever it is now) pass something encouraging member schools to play P5 schools in non-conference play? -
So this thread asks if we are the most important, the title of the article asks which is the toughest, and the body of the article asks which is the biggest. And I figure each of those has a different answer. Assuming OU is not an answer, Most important? BYU. Placement on schedule ahead of a predicted loss against UCLA make it an important one and a gauge of program. Toughest? Ok State. On road. Late fall. A place they always seem to have problems. Biggest? UCLA. No question. Marquee matchup at Jerry's World.
