"I can’t be bothered to learn too much about such a team (UNT)...&
Eagle1855 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
There's nothing in the world wrong with T-shirt fans. I have three rules for t-shirt fandom: 1) You don't get to talk s*** to an opponent's fans who are actual alums of that program. (For ex: T-shirt Aggie fan doesn't get to talk trash to actual Rice grad) 2) You don't get to say "we" when referencing said team of which you are a fan. SEC fan are notorious for this. 3) You don't root for your chosen t-shirt program over you alma mater. Ever. Follow these three rules and we can all have a happy Saturday. I welcome all the t-shirt fans UNT can get. All day, every day. Buy some green and cheer on the team. -
I'm neither young, nor uncorrupted. Just realistic and unwilling to put the blame of our ineptitude on the shoulders of others. We don't lose these games because of refs. We lose these games because we simply aren't as good. When was the last time a game at UT was close? 26 years ago? Hell, when was the last time a game at any elite P5 school was close? Georgia? We didn't almost beat Georgia; we lost by 17 points **edit, sorry, 24 points. We lost to Georgia by more points than we scored.**. We didn't lose to Georgia because of the refs. We lost at Georgia because we had no run game and our defense gave up 640 yards. Because we weren't as good as Georgia. And if we lose to UT on Saturday, it won't be because of the refs. It will be simply because our team isn't as good as theirs. You guys can keep playing the ref card and keep thinking the world is out to get UNT football. The reality is, UNT has only one entity to blame for its own shortcomings: itself.

The UNT Mean Green, Iraq, and my Texas Flag.
Eagle1855 replied to UNTDoubleAlum's topic in Mean Green Football
God Bless you, sir! And God Bless Texas. -
Referring to the fact that we're closer to the right side of the quadrant than the left, but I should have remembered this is the NT Football Forum, where we're baselessly on the defense about everything that ever happens related to our program. Thanks for the reminder. Someone write a Senator and alert the news; we've been aggrieved again.

They used several different criterion to determine the embarrassment factor, which I believe included whether or not the athletic department supported itself, financially, whether there was a student fee in place, 4-year graduation figures, APR, numbers of players arrested, etc. But at least we're closer to powerhouse than weakling.

Texas Longhorns Tuning Up with North Texas

So many players from that 2006 Texas team went on to play in the NFL. -
UT's Vance Bedford comments on UNT Offense
Eagle1855 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Bedford thinks giving up almost 2 yards per quarter is unacceptable. And for every NT completion, someone loses a toe. -

Eagle1855 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Rooting against one's Alma Mater is a universal no-no in the sports fan world. But that was not my point. Which was perhaps poorly illustrated. But simply, my point was this: painting fanbases with broadbrushes is a waste of time. The commenter makes it sound like "UNT fans don't support the investment into athletics" because "it's a music school" and "my friends told me so." That carries no more weight than my absurd comparison (which are both factual, though far from the norm). Further, no, rooting for UT-Austin becaue you went to UT-Arlington/couldnt get into UT-Austin is not even close to the same thing. Lastly, people can root for whoever they want. Life's short. Have fun. -
I say win at UT or die. It's pretty black and white with me.

Well, I know a UT alum who roots for a&m and another one who doesn't even LIKE football at all. So, I guess that says everything we need to know about the entire UT fanbase. -
Reasons to believe we MIGHT open the offense up

I don't even... -
This. But I too am obviously hoping this isn't the case. --- Further, a lot has changed in the 26 years since we were robbed. Mainly, the entire landscape of college football. Every call can be scrutinized. We have instant replay. The calls in that game in 1988 wouldn't have ever stood up in today's game, and very likely wouldn't have even been made. I think it's harder than ever to "fix" a game. Too many eyes. Too much money. Not saying it doesn't happen. Just saying, I have a hard time believing such egregious calls would/could be made in today's game. Gotta figure those officials like having a job -- and like many of us, would prefer to be known for doing the best job they can. If that makes me naive, I'm okay with it.

That game was 26 years ago. No one playing in this year's game was even born when that happened. In fact, most wouldn't be born until 4 years later -- at the earliest.

I agree with you, Harry. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if we lose, it likely won't have anything to do with the refs.

Reasons to believe we MIGHT open the offense up
Eagle1855 replied to GOMG2013's topic in Mean Green Football
Bring it! We managed 7 yards against Georgia, last season. 7. We averaged somewhere close to 250 yards per game in conference play but managed just 132 in non-conference (heavily skewed thanks to said Georgia game). That said, Texas did give up 200+ five different times last year (three of which were after the Ole Miss game). So I suppose it isn't totally out of the realm of possibility. And I might have researched that before I made said proclamation. But whatever happens, it's a win-win. -

If we run for over 200 yards against Texas, I'll get a tattoo of the flying worm on my ass, next to the final score of our victory. -
Reasons to believe we MIGHT open the offense up
Eagle1855 replied to GOMG2013's topic in Mean Green Football
Agreed. DT was fantastic against Idaho and had a nice game against Ball State in the air and on the ground. But he had awful performances in 2 of our 3 "winnable" losses (UTSA and Tulane) and costly turnovers in the other "winnable" loss vs Ohio. So his performance was directly related to 3 of our 4 losses (I'm calling Georgia a team loss), last season. He also wasn't particularly "good" in the wins against MTSU and Rice -- but he did as much as we needed to do to win those games. Anyway, my point is not to bag on Thompson -- we had an historic season -- but rather to say, we've not had consistent QB play in a good while at NT and I am hopeful that Greer represents a turning point to that end, building on what this 2013 team accomplished. -
A UT Fan's Perspective On Upcoming UNT Game
Eagle1855 replied to LongJim's topic in Mean Green Football
Seems like a pretty fair assessment. It all hinges on QB play and winning the turnover battle, in my opinion. The defense will do what they do. -
UT also played in a better offensive league. So it's unlikely our offense faces a better D in practice every day. I think our OL is our strong point, but I also don't think that will matter a single bit if we can't throw the ball. If we cannot pass effectively to keep them from stacking the line (like we did in the K-State game), we will be in for a very long, disappointng day in Austin. We will not beat them at straight-up, smash-mouth football.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I thought this was had a sand-bagging quality to it since they first released the information re: his "injury." It's a significant development, for sure. He's a big part of their offense and ST.

Official Texas Game Score Prediction Thread
Eagle1855 replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
Head: I think it's something like 24-0 before ending with a final score of 31-10, in favor of Texas. Heart: It's a really ugly game that's even uglier for the home team. 20-17, North Texas. -
This is a good post. And to this point, the fact that we couldn't get anything going on offense against teams like UTSA and Tulane (forget Georgia) is further cause for concern. UT will likely have a better defense than every team we faced last season. But as it's been said, it's a new season, and you assume the team has progressed with another offseason under their belt. And you hope Greer is a ready-made starter and game-manager who can help take pressure off the run game with effective throws.

This is such a big part of why we had so much success on defense and ultimately, in the W/L column. To have a shot in this game, we've got to be much, much better with our average field position than the last few times we played down there.
