  1. I don't think you realize what Mack Brown did for Texas. He effectively put the program back on the map. First, with boosters and season ticket sales. Then with a product, which netted a national title, a record string of 10-win seasons and a few BCS bowl appearances -- far beyond what anyone else in the State of Texas accomplished during his tenure. A couple bounces one way or the other with a healthy Colt McCoy and a tackle on Michael Crabtree and his legacy might have been different (granted, it would have been a total disappointment had USC converted a 4th & 2 -- or punted). Mack's downfall was refusing to continue to recruit and backfill positions with blue-chip talent, as Saban does at Alabama. Saban stocks every position. Best guy wins out and the rest can wait until their turn or transfer out. Saban doesn't do ego. Saban doesn't promise guys he won't recruit someone better for a given guy's position. Mack seemed so worried he'd hurt the egos of the big names he did secure, combined with -- and I'll agree with you, stargazing -- that he lost his edge at the only place he used to consistently dominate: the living room.
  2. I mean, I'd take $2M a year for a job in a state that I'd spent the last decade and a half recruiting. It's not like he's starting over, creating new relationships with new schools. He was fairly adamant he planned to coach the duration of his contract, so he may have one more stint in him, for the right price. Plus there's almost no one that can shake hands with wealthy donors like Brown.
  3. 1.) Frowney face. These idiots record this stuff so that they can show it to other idiots who get off on watching fight videos online. That's why he keeps yelling "World Star." How's that for class? 2) I can't imagine it would take more than 2 minutes for UNT police to respond to such an issue in one of UNT's campus parking lots or designated tailgate areas. But like I said, I found it impressive and surprising. Not appalled. As of now, I've no plans of writing a congressperson or committing my life to blogging about it.
  4. Two Observations: 1) There's always a woman sreaming hysterically over and over in every fight video. 2) There's always some jerkwad saying "World Star" over and over in every fight video. And a bonus thought: I wish for once that someone would take a swing at the World Star losers that just stand around taking video instead of doing something useful. Like helping break-up the fight or alerting someone who can. Impressive it went on for over 5 minutes before any authority made it over there.
  5. I PM'd yesterday as well. If someone else has tickets to the game Thursday that they're looking to off-load, shoot me a message. Else I'll just buy walk up tickets in the absence of any threat of a sell-out.
  6. It shouldn't matter. Everyone has issues, different reasons why they can or can't make a game (and kids are absolutely a valid reason). My point is this: There are over 270k people in the metromess alone (alum + students + the six or seven casual t-shirt fans in Denton) that have ties to UNT. So while some people have kids, work, etc... you're only asking for a little over TEN PERCENT of those people, in some combination, to show up week in and week out... and that doesn't include those who come in from out of town (like myself). So when you figure all that + the insanely low cost of tickets, it's actually quite pathetic we've still not yet managed a sell out.
  7. Ha. Until we beat (or compete with) a big boy, no.
  8. Hahaha yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that they now represent the B1G's only [realistic] shot at having an undefeated participant in the inaugural playoff!
  9. Still have 36k students, right? Still got a couple hundred thousand alum in the D/FW area alone, right? I guess the answer is: for gameday to become more of a priority to those two groups.
  10. I work from home, so I basically just sat around and high-fived myself for a little while this morning. Will probably do so again this afternoon... if I have time before the lady gets home.
  11. Mr. 1855 and Trusty Sidekick will be in Denton Thursday for the Big Green Hootennany at Apogee.
  12. Indeed, sir. Good to make the aquaintance. They've got a great thing at Silo. Gameday or otherwise, highly recommend it next time any-of-you's is in Austin. I believe I'll be watching the La Tech game in Denton. Finally.
  13. Really wish UTEP had pulled out that game against Tech and UTSA against Arizona. Both were there for the taking.
  14. I think it's interesting UTEP and Texas Tech are so far apart on the list, given the way they just played against one another. I'm also not convinced TCU would beat UTSA. But I feel failry confident saying Baylor and Texas A&M would (or will, in the case of Baylor) beat everyone else on that list.
  15. Not any more than UT was a program-defining loss. We did what we needed to do -- what we had to do -- against a team in a tailspin to stay on track. Handle business against La Tech on Thursday and we're easily on our way to a 3-1 start with a road date in Indiana. If we can start 4-1, the program will have begun to define itself.
  16. Win with class, lose with grace.
  17. I think we just enjoy the realization that there's no conspiracy, rather if we do somehting worth writing about, they'll write about it.
  18. Oh sure they do! They're a back entrance for people who couldn't get into UT-Austin the first go-'round. If you can fill out an application, their 83% acceptance rate says you've got a great future ahead of you as a Roadrunner!
  19. You were right!
  20. A) There's nothing to do in Lincoln. 2) You're comparing us to one of the best fanbases with the more tradition than most of college sports. C) If UNT wants to lead the state in a non-revenue sport that's going to do nothing but soak up dollars, they should add men's soccer and become THE team in the state.
  21. If you consider their average attendance vs student enrollment, they're kicking our asses in. And when I say our, I mean UNT. I don't want to speak for you. Rice averaged 18k fans per game with 6k students. NT averaged 21k fans per game with 36k students. So which program is it that "no one" follows.
  22. The difference between UNT and UTSA these past three seasons is basically QB play. They had QB's who could go out and win games. We didn't. That's pretty much it. Yes, their QB threw away the game last night with a dumb-ass throw, but the only reason they were even in that position was because he eluding defenders in the pocket (pocket awareness!) and made a few key throws throughout the game. I hope they do win out, following an inevitable loss against OSU. And I hope we kick the s*** out of them in SA.
  23. I dont think UH cares as much. There isn't this animosity between the universities like there is with SMU and UNT. I think from the AAC's perspective, as UNT 90 said previously, it's all about market. Why take another Houston team? Similarly, why add UNT when you've got SMU, a similarly perpetually-underachieving G5 metroplex school? It always comes to down to the same thing: just win. That's all we can control. One year of posting a respectable record got us a lot of run. Imagine posting 3 or 4 of them in a row?
  24. I've held nothing but disdain for the F_U schools since they joined the SBC. From UNT's perspective, they offer absolutely zero upside to any conference they are a part of.
  25. Exactly. AAC is a better conference. It's the CUSA we wanted to be a part of. And we'd join the first chance we get. Too bad the next spot is going to Riverwalk U.
