We the fans should have called better plays. We the fan should have gotten the players better prepared. We the fans should have had a better game plan. I see his (veiled) point. We really screwed up by just showing up expecting our team to play well. Hopefully we will do a better job saturday.

Nice work LongJim, those stats tell a pretty good story. Next people will argue the top 10 teams didnt DESERVE to be, etc... blah blah blah.. everyone will find a way to qualify the team they perceive to be best--- and thats all ANYONE can do because its all "perception" without a playoff. It wont matter in the end, IMO, as Texas and USC will be the only teams to win out---yes, that includes a USC 'w' over UCLA. UCLA doesnt have enough "stuff" to spend 60 on a field with USC. In the end, I like the Longhorns in a game against USC. It is the SEXY pick, but its a good matchup. I think its a winnable game for Texas. OU had no passing defense last year. Anyone who saw them play A&M and OkState knows that and shouldve known the impending disaster that was waiting in the Orange Bowl. If Texas would have opened up the play book and thrown it at ALL down field against OU last year they would have been in Miami, not Pasadena. Who cares though, we have a must win game in Denton on Saturday.

Weiss makes more a game than DD does in a season? amazing. I think its ridiculous to pay a coach that much, but I also think its ridiculous to do this after just 7 some odd games... I mean, really? My guess would be that Notre Dame thinks they have their ticket back to becoming a national elite power and wants to hang on to him. Truth is, they almost (and should have) beat a USC team who's defense isnt as near as good as last years (still impressive, but does one game a season make?), beat a sorry Pitt and UW team, an average purdue team a schizo michigan team and lost to Michigan State. Yeah, they have done well and Im not trying to take away from that, but its a bit early (IMO) to be writing checks that large.

Agree... and Auburn getting left out of the mix was pretty absurd. Imagine an SEC team going through that schedule then missing the big dance... kinda rough. Truly, its stupid if ANY team gets left out from a BCS conference in this age of parity. I almost hope all 4 of these teams are undefeated so that it makes a big mess of everything and they are forced to reevaluate the way a champion is crowned. Can you imagine the stink that would be raised if TEXAS got left out? A playoff system is the only hope for the mid major programs to EVER have a shot at a NC. And for that reason, unrealisitic as it may be, I hope the whole system falls apart!

Perhaps we are declaring 'fault' to mean 2 different things...my point was, UT didnt recruit for OU or A&M or Nebraska, nor did they coach their players or call their plays. Its hard for me to understand how one can say that it is USC, or UT's (or whoevers else is in a historically strong conference that is having a down year) fault for having a weaker conference schedule one year. UT scheduled Ohio State, went in to one of the toughest places to play football and won. Ballsy move when the big 12 usually has more than a couple top 25 teams and a couple top 10 teams. But I'll stop here before I get branded with a scarlet "A" for being a big 12 "apologist". Let the games play out before you light your torch in town square and set out on a hunt for Mack Brown and company... it may not even be a factor. Bama and USC have looked shaky in some games, VT has a big test coming up this week.

I dont think there will be but 2 teams in the end that go all the way and it will work itself out but... If Va Tech or Bama goes undefeated, it would be hard to formulate any argument keeping them out. Likewise for Texas or USC. Its not like Texas had anything to do with the big 12's mediocrity this year, and if Bama and VT win out they may jump Texas (or USC-- Texas was ranked #1 in all the computers this week, the human polls cause USC to jump back ahead). I think if you set your hatred for UT aside and looked at it objectively, you would see that all 4 of those teams are incredibly balanced, strong teams and that a case could be made for each of them. Personally, I think if Bama and VT win out their respective conferences, they have a more legitimate argument than Texas OR USC...

Belittling people is an excellent way to make your point, Emmitt So let me ask you, at what point would it be acceptable to raise our level of expectation? When should I/we start to expect us to at least be COMPETITIVE in our non-conference games? I can appreciate differing opinions- thats the beauty of a board like this... just trying to wrap my can't-quite-count-to-fifty mind around the thought process that lies beneath the sarcasm...

Well, maybe if we DEMAND a better showing in our OOC games, perhaps the university will FIND a coach that can get us there, because I, for one, am unimpressed with ANY 50 point loss, regardless of the team or how well we played. But then again, I didnt go to the game, nor have I ever played or coached football on a collegiate level, so what do I know... back to my cave

I think the fact the date was changed had alot to do with the lack of showing by NT fans... I had 3 tix that I couldnt use because the date change conflicted with a prior engagement... originally I had a hotel room in Baton Rouge and the weekend planned out. I think this was the case with several people. I wish I would have been able to go, but such is life.

Beating SMU isnt anything special. A lot of teams have done that the past 5 years. Winning the Sunbelt is kind of the same thing. Everyone beats sun belt teams. I would be content splitting the OOC games (inevitable loss to Texas and then dropping a close one with La Tech/Tulsa) and I EXPECT to win the Sun Belt...again. In fact, Im rather embarrased we even lost a game in the conference. I really think we have a legitimate shot at a 9-2 season next year. Anything less than 8-3 will be a big disappointment for me. I'd also like to score a touchdown against Texas and maybe sustain a couple drives. That would be great...92-0 is kind of embarrasing.

Agreed, but I think as a coach you kinda have to think before you throw out opinions like that in a PC-sensitive-to-the-point-of-absurdity soctiey, thats why I think it is a stupid thing to say. Empirical evidence suggest there is merit to the statement, but I dont know that it needs to be stated in a press conference. Anyways, I dont want to turn this into a big political debate, that wasnt my intention!

Not really. I think people make the jokes about it as a coping mechanism for the fact that we are having a pretty rough year. I dont think anyone wants our team (or any fan of ANY program) to be considered one of the WORST teams and implying such kinda ridiculous.

i dont think it will be that awful. something more like 45-0. LSU goes in at the half up big, sends in the young players for most of third and all of fourth.
