TEXAS vs. USC--BIGGEST GAME IN DECADES
Eagle1855 replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
I think OU already did that to the tune of 65-13 -
good call. lets do it. Dont say, "we could never do that at NT" just because it hasnt been done. If we had taken that approach, we would have never gone to the NO Bowl 4 times in a row. How many people thought back in 99 we would ever go to 4 straight bowl games? Stop selling the program short, start figuring out what we can do to make it reality!

Had a great time watching one of the most mind-numbing bowl games of the year. Glad I stayed up for that. Both kickers doing their best Jay Feely and Billy Cundiff impressions. Hard to tell if the defenses were that good or if the offenses were that inept. Then to top it off, there was more yellow fabric on the field than you'd find at a craft store. Reminded me of some of our games. And I am convinced Jo Pa does nothing during the game anymore. Its like the prop him up and go back to calling the plays. I saw the coordinators calling times out. Same goes for Bowdens gang. Last night it looked more like a show down between the grandfathers of college football's coordinators going at it, rather than the legends themselves. Anyone else notice this? On the flipside, we should all be so lucky to be doing something we love at the ripe old age of 79! Plus, I took FSU to cover, so I found it to be a profitable game as well!

TEXAS vs. USC--BIGGEST GAME IN DECADES
Eagle1855 replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
I dont know if you saw the game, but I was there and I didnt feel like they ran up the score at all. We played like trash. We didnt even look like we deserved to be on the field. They could have scored 100 points. They scored off their first play from the line of scrimmage, and never stopped. -
Best bowl season in recent memory?
Eagle1855 replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I have really enjoyed this bowl season. Texas Tech losing that game like that was classic! Karma's a real bitch huh? I know the OU fans were smiling... The sugar bowl was my favorite. I enjoyed all the big plays in the Fiesta bowl as well. Penn State and Ohio State will be right back in the mix next year if they can replace those LB's Hope the game tonight lives up to the hype. Im so tired of hearing about USC. ESPN has lost their minds comparing this USC team to the best all time before they even play or win the game. What an insult to Texas (and I would say that about ANY team they might have played) The Holiday Bowl should be named "The Ryan Leaf Disappointment Bowl". What a let down this game is. Every year a top 5 team gets left out of a BCS bowl game, then lays an egg against an opponent they should have beaten. Glad to see OU expose the Pac 10 just like Tech did last year. -
Would it be wrong for me to wear orange?
Eagle1855 replied to AustinTalon's topic in Mean Green Football
only if you continue to wear orange if the longhorns get beat on Wednesday... if its your school, support it. I will always wear my green. NT is my first love and will always take precedence over all others, but I would/will support whatever graduate school I received a degree from as well. Your real challenge comes September. If it were me, I'd be in green. Its easy to wear orange! -
I guess if you reduce all of NT Football's shortcomings to a lack of an effective passing game, then its pretty easy to say a mere change in scheme will bring about donors, fans, etc. Of course you cant do that without ignoring all of the other factors that influence a person's attendance or donation decisions, or even the other external factors that influence NT's athletics program. Have you considered that Texas Tech is in a bit of a different scenario than NT? Tech had a decent fanbase BEFORE Leach was hired. Tech was also in the Southwest conference and are now in the big 12. They play teams that other people in the state actually care about. We can beat Guacamole State and Avacado U 70-3 year in and year out and those games attendance would still be surpassed by the attendance we would have if Texas or A&M came to Fouts (or the elusive new stadium). Much of our attendance issues come from lack of interest in the teams we play. So I think you should add in "joining the big 12" as part of your answer(s). Another thing to consider is the fact that U of H had somewhat unimpressive attendance numbers when they were hanging tons of points on the SWC with their "high powered offense" in the late 80s and early 90's, and they were a top 10 program with a heisman trophy-- a far cry from the 50k+ you see at tech games. They couldnt even get people to the astrodome for games. Oh, and U of H has a huge alumni base. In short, a high powered offense isnt an end-all. So I must disagree. I think it would be a nice start, but I would like to get that nasty defense back as well. dont get me wrong, I would like to see an effective offense, but I would rather have a BALANCED offense that can hurt you with the run and the pass--- and that wins games. That's what puts butts in seats.

Click on his/her name (SUMG) and click "send a personal message" under the "Communicate" section

Without question we run one of the most conservative and most boring offenses in the nation. And after this year, you can tack on "most ineffective" as well. This is why I am suprised to see the same OC here. You would think with the fan altercations and the "awe-inspiring" production stats, there are enough reasons to find a new OC. But I guess thats a whole other issue unto itself. I dont think you can teach DD or RF new tricks, so I expect more of the same next year. Hopefully with at least a little more effectiveness. I might need a straight jacket if SMU does anything remotely close to what Tulsa did in our opener.
-
Ok fair enough, but its hard to quantify "the hearts and affections of America". My point is, the offense isnt infallible. U of H had a hell of an offense in the late 80's and early 90's but it was rendered ineffective once people figured out how to stop it. Same for Techs offense. The defensive juggernaut Baylor held Tech to 6 points into the 4th quarter. The "overrated" Texas Longhorns destroyed Tech. Tech lost to 3-8 Oklahoma State. They needed help from officials to beat 7-4 OU. They beat up on 2 and a half div 1AA teams. They beat an A&M team with one of worst secondaries in the nation and needed a last second TD to beat a lousy 7-4 Nebraska team. All of this = worst 9-2 team in the nation, with 0 quality wins. Most of the Big 12 has figured the offense out. I cant think of a time in the last few decades where a gimmicky offense won a championship. If there was one, please share. Defenses are just too fast these days. Its great for building interest in a program, I agree with you there. It makes for exciting games. In fact, I wouldnt be opposed to something like that at NT if the right guy came along and could do it effectively. I'd love to have 9-win seasons. Of course, I wouldnt be opposed to ANY type of offensive production at NT.

Will not support DD & RF any further....
Eagle1855 replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
I do. All the SBC wins in the world wont matter to me if we start sunbelt play with an 0-3 record. If we lay an egg against SMU like we did against Tulsa, then lose games in Sun Belt play, you will see a new coach in 2007 (in my opinion). I dont think we can afford to go 0-5 at home again without some shake ups. Especially when we are in the freaking Sun Belt. -
I agree. Its both. At least in the Big 12 you can say to top talent, "we are gonna go to a BCS bowl game and go for a National Championship". With an exciting offense, you get the casual fan to tune in. I will go see a tech game having little interest in Texas Tech solely because I know it will be fun to watch. On the flip side, it doesnt always take a wacky offense to accomplish that. Sometimes it just takes an exciting player. I'll watch a Falcons game because of Vick, and I have ZERO interest in most of the NFL. Same with Young, Texas. Bush, USC etc. But until Tech wins anything that matters, I'm not jumping on the gimmicky offense band wagon.

from the way it looked on tv, I would say there was about 16,342 or 16,343 KU fans and about 6,924 U of H fans. Just a guess though. Like I said, I only caught a couple glimpses of the crowd on TV.

JUCO Signings, why nothing on UNT Site?
Eagle1855 replied to untbowler's topic in Mean Green Football
why would a "pro style" QB want to come to NT? Have you seen our offensive play calls? -
I meant every other bowl game this year. Not every other New Orleans bowl. And it still stands. The New Orleans Bowl has been the best of the rest of bowls so far this year. Most of the others havent even been close
-
they scored 42 points off 3 pointers. but, UH doesnt have a great defense. We were able to score on lay ups all day.
-
game over. 92-84 UH The cougars shot 14 of 28 from the 3 point line and 58% from the field... thats pretty impressive. We went cold on FT's at the end of the game. Frustrating loss in a very winnable game. Too bad more of our fans werent at the game, it sounded like a really good one til the last minute. Hopefully this will bring some people out. We now drop to 4-1 at home this year, right?
-
90-83, missing free throws, only seconds remain. That off balance 3 was the nail in the coffin for us
-
that will probably be game over lost the ball and they dunked it with the foul
-
stupid sutpid shot out of the break. we have been beating them down low all game and they come out of the time out with a 3?
-
that might be the killer... Houston burys a 3 from deep 1.03 to go 88-83, UH ball
-
the commentators in Houston are talking about the A&M game and how NT should have won that game. one point game we need this! what a game to miss, sounds like the game of the year. 83-80, NT shooting freethrows
-
79-75, UH... ~4 min to play. Calvin Watson fouled out with 6:20 to play, now Latham of UH has fouled out Ramon Dyer of UH has hit 7 threes and has 23 points. wow
-
56-50, Cougar ball. They are killing us with 3's. We are winning the turnover battle. They are out-rebounding and out-assisting us.
