agreed. although FIU might be a lot closer than you think. They won several games at the end of last year and return a lot of players from that squad. I would love to beat SMU, and I think it is important we do, but I would take a loss to SMU and a 9-3 season over a 6-6 season that features a W over the ponies. In other words, I want to sniff the top 25... at least get a couple votes. Baby steps...

LINK After just two years at the helm, SMU will fire head coach Jimmy Tubbs, according to sources close to the situation. Tubbs took over two years ago after spending 12 seasons as an assistant at the school and the previous two under Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma. The Mustangs finished 14-14 in his first season and were 13-16 and 4-10 in conference play this past year. The reason for the late timing on the decision was that SMU athletic director Jim Copeland was out on medical leave until Monday.

What was the first UNT game that you attended?
Eagle1855 replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Football
it hasnt. Id be suprised if you even saw a footnote. Thats why this Rice series will be a good thing. Would like to see UH in there as well. Of course, moving to C-USA would be tremendous for our visibility as well, as Houston is a C-USA (and Big 12) city. -
even more remarkable was the fact that he managed to haul in a 53 yarder-- from himself. Man, we have got to get this guy on the field more often! All in all, I am excited about the upcoming season... too bad its April.

Its actually called the "Dickey Draw" and it was highly effective against UT in 2004, so I wouldnt mock it if I were you... -

If this is how we play the game this year, we will lose by 60+ points again. Notice on 3rd and 10, we run up the middle and Michael Huff, the SAFETY makes the tackle on a one yard play. Yeah, Id say they felt the passing game was of little concern. Of course, who can forget the next play after this sequence. Painful. -

I agree with everything in the second half of your post, but I disagree with this. Recruiting classes do mean jack. UT is the winningest program over the past 8 years with an 83-19 record (ahead of Miami, BSU, OU, and FSU). You think having one of the best recruiting classes in the nation for those 6-7 years had anything to do with that? And although its certainly possible that someone who aces the SAT could end up on the street, the incidence of such occurance is certainly far lower than someone who is mentally handicapped or mentally ill. That being said, I still maintain what I said in my first post. This is as good a chance as we have had in years. Long shot, sure. But I will still be there in green cheering my ass off. -
you would think they could find someone to read over these things or at least run them through a spellcheck before posting them

My thoughts exactly. I didnt watch the game, didnt even know it was going on, but I would imagine with a freshmen QB, there is no reason why we shouldnt be showing them all kinds of different blitz's and try to disrupt timing as much as possible maybe forcing some trunovers. I think UT's defense will still be stout, so moving the ball will be still be quite a feat... and if history is any indicator, it will be actually be more like a nightmare as we havent even been able to get as much as a field goal the last 2 times we played. Our O-line will have to play out of their minds for us to have a chance. -
yes and Baylor snuck in to that deal because the gov of Texas wanted them there
-
actually, the chances are better now than they ever have been. Utah went and won one 2 years ago and TCU would have made it last year under the new provisions. A playoff is never going to happen. Until we go undefeated and get snubbed from a BCS bowl, we have nothing to complain about. Any undefeated non-bcs team will make it to a BCS bowl game, assuming they play a couple of strong games in a season. I doubt we could do it by playin all the SBC teams, a coule of 1AA'a, SMU and Temple, but with a win over Texas, Tulsa, SMU, La Tech, and the 'belt, I have no doubt we would be in a good position for a BCS bowl game by the end of the year.

Im not bored of others memories. I think its great that at one time we were legitimate, and I enjoy hearing about days when our program was viewed as such. Its the constant bemoaning over the current state of affairs and how we "missed the boat" that I find to be annoying. Thats true. We did miss the boat. If we had gotten into the SWC maybe we would have had a lot more success and became one of the "big dogs" in the state. Or we could have just as easily been a U of H, who enjoyed a lot of success then slipped into the dark ages with the formation of the Big 12-- because make no mistake, we would have been left out of that as well. Texas, OU and A&M would have had no interest in sharing recruits from one of the nations' hottest recruiting beds with another large state school located in that market. I think that is a large part of the reason Houston was left out. Either way, it would have been better than it is now. But whats the point of constantly saying, "things would be/were different if/when Hayden was around". Well no kidding. He is regarded as one of the greats. Just look at all the assistant coaches that learned under him that have now become great head coaches. and for Texas State's sake, I hope Bailiff isnt the next Francione.

Designers selecting mascot for Dallas campus
Eagle1855 replied to NTEagle08's topic in Mean Green Football
Point is, there are ZERO schools that I can think of that are in a system that take on the same mascot, logo and colors as the main campus. They are not the same schools, so would not have the same logos, mascots, or colors? -

I still disagree. Its not the same school, nor should it be. UH-Downtown does not share the same Mascot as UofH's main campus. And if UNT-D ever has any sort of sports team, how could they possibly have the same name? I propse a compromise. how about the UNT-D "Annoyed Yellow". That way it takes from our history but has a new, sunnier color that promotes the brighter days we see ahead at UNT. -

why? its not the same school. That would just cheapen the Denton campus. Its not the UTEP Longorns or the TAM-Commerce Aggies. Why would UNTD be the Eagles or Mean Green? -
Mansfield ISD negotiating FB stadium naming rights
Eagle1855 replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah. Im all about representation of the majority, not catering to the minority. SO, if the majority of people want a Muslim Hospital to sponsor a stadium, I say go for it. What I am not a fan of is one person whose hurt feelings derail an entire stadium funding project because of something so trivial as a name, when that hospital system has been named such for 70+ years. -

Eagle1855 replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I think we spend WAAAAAYYYY too much time worrying about people's "feelings" but that a whole other discussion. Are there many highschool stadiums that have corporate sponsorship? I havent heard of that in the past. -

I have grown bored of all the Hayden Fry talk. I realize that Hayden Fry was once our savior, He was the greatest coach at NT, blah blah blah We get it. He is gone. He is not coming back. Been gone 30 years. Time to move forward. Comparing DD to our savior Hayden Fry is a waste of time. It was a different time then than it is now. Its a different game. There is more money in college football now than ever before. If we had a coach like Hayden Fry, we would keep him for all of 2-3 seasons, then some BCS school would scoop him up and we'd be back to square one. Just look at Dan Hawkins. Urban Meyer. Not that I wouldnt love to have a season or two like that, but it wont be Hayden Fry who takes us there.
