  1. that didnt even answer the question. Good to see the local media still gets its digs in whenever they get a chance!
  2. For the guy who calls out everyone else on reading comprehension, I will explain the point of my post since it could not be extrapolated using the context clues. My point was simply that many people in the Big 10 might think a close, hard fought matchup is in fact an exciting game, and that the fact that a final score was 13-10 doesnt necessarily preclude it being entertaining. That is typically the style of football you see there. I didnt say the tradition, or the fanbase, or the programs, or anything else were in anyway similar.
  3. did you know that it was going to be a 52-14 beating BEFORE you came to the game?
  4. well, we got the largest crowd in Fouts history to the Baylor game running that same boring-ass offense, so I dont see your point. 'Boring wins' (which I am assuming you mean, "wins with a boring offense") dont bring masses to the games? Tell that to the Big 10.
  5. ah yes, another classic tale of how one man's passion for another causes him to be blinded by emotions and act out irrationally. same story, different 'mountain'
  6. You arent taking into account the fact that TCU's alumni base and student enrollment pales in comparison to NT's.
  7. No. we average as many or more per game than many C-USA, MAC, and WAC teams -not to mention other Sun Belt teams. Win games, people will come. Get into C-USA and play teams that people have heard of and even more will come. Winning is the #1 thing.
  8. I honestly have no idea. I was originally going to Texas Tech (which was also random), had a dorm assigned and everything, then decided I had little interest in being in Lubbock. To tell you the truth, I dont think I really had much of clue coming straight out of highschool. Growing up in Houston, I knew I wanted to go away from home so U of H was never an option (though I will probably now end up getting my MBA there, in a strange twist of fate). A good friend of mine who was going to Belmont in Nashville told me about NT. Having some interest in music, it sounded alright. Went up and visited, decided in August I would go there- which is how I ended up in beautiful West Hall (though never did a thing related to music). Like UNTSIG, my fraternity and the guys I met really kept me there. I wasnt all that impressed with NT when I first arrived. Seemed like everyone was from the DFW area and had kind of defaulted there. In fact, I had even seriously considered transferring. I ended up meeting some great people, got involved in several organizations, fell in love with Denton, started going to athletic events, and the rest is history. Glad I stayed. The vision of Dr Pohl and RV is probably the biggest reason I am passionate about North Texas. I have always been a fan of the underdog, and I see huge potential in North Texas- I believe in it. I just wish the campus and the atmosphere on campus was as it is now back in 1999!
  9. you get what you pay for. you must be the only person on this board that didnt know he would be at North Carolina. There was NO chance of him coming here. Who cares about what all the local newspapers think. They dont have the Longhorns race to the national title game to gush over anymore and the UT/A&M game isnt til next week. what else would they talk about? not. a. chance. although, if you want backlash or negative PR, this would be a GREAT hire.
  10. ahh, I love the backhanded comments. reading all these articles from the various news outlets in DFW really affrims everything I have ever thought about people having gross misconceptions of UNT. Or maybe they all just want NT to remain bathed in mediocrity (or worse) so that it doesnt represent a challenge to either of the golden children of the metroplex, SMU and TCU. why is this such a hard sell? i imagine there are many coaches in the state and nation that would have loved to have a schedule like ours this past year- and would have seen that as an opportunity to wil a lot of games.
  11. when the hell did we play 4 or 5 money games a year? where is this misconception coming from? We are not Rice, who played @ UCLA, Texas, and @ FSU... we played @ Texas, SMU, @ Akron, @ Tulsa and La Tech- not exactly a bunch of world-beaters. The way I see it, we've really only played 1 - 2 money games a year for the last 5. He's right, this is a great job opportunity for someone, and in the end it will prove to be a great jump for someone's career.
  12. no highschool football coaches!! there are plenty of good coordinators out therefrom BCS schools, with ties to high schools all over the state of texas and beyond. with a maximum base of 500k, we should be able to find someone who already has experience in the college ranks.
  13. he did play at Texas in 1969... rode the pine during their national championship season. He then transferred to North Texas
  14. to be sure, he donates a lot of money to a lot of charities, events, etc... I believe he also provided A&M with their tennis courts. He is a terrific marketer, business man, and philanthropist (which kind of goes back to marketing ). He understands that anytime he gets himself in the news, its a few more times the name Gallery Furniture gets read by millions of readers. Growing up here, I always liked him. He has just gotten on my nerves the last year with all his newspaper ads on his opinions of what he thinks football teams he "supports" should do. Especially now that it is North Texas. I respect his right to have an opinion, and I love that he made the donation- it is greatly appreciated- and I think they ought to name the field after DD per his request. The notion that he knows what is best for NT as an accomplished furniture salesman in Houston rather than RV as an AD of the University is somewhat difficult for me to wrap my mind around. Printing up an ad in the paper for the next 5 years wont change the fact that of Dickey's 40 something wins (in 9 years), ~30 came against the worst teams (at the time) in Div 1A football, the sunbelt conference. It doesnt change the fact that despite all the percieved success of winning 4 straight conference championships, recruiting hasnt improved, people in the US (and people from Texas) still dont even know that we are a Div 1 program, we still get blown out by lousy teams, and he still never got a look from other institutions as a HC. You can spin that however you like, but the job wasnt getting done.
  15. Im planning on going... what is the best way to purchase tickets? through Rice? Id like to be amongst the rest of the NT fans
  16. great points. This was a difficult thing for RV, no question about it. While it may look like a no-brainer to some of us, from the outside it still looks like we fired the only coach that won 4 conference championships, took us to 4 bowl games (winning one), and increased our national recognition in the process. I have 100% confidence in RV making the right choice for our next coach, and look forward to seeing how far NT goes in the upcoming years. Join the MGC, buy season tickets. Try to attend the last home game of the season. Show everyone we are serious about our program in Denton!
  17. He was all bent out of shape that they werent going to take Vince Young so he was calling the radio stations here every week expressing his disgust, running full page ads in the paper supporting VY, and threatening on the radio (as well implying it in print) to pull sponsorship money if they didnt take him. from the Houston Chronicle: "mack" on vince
  18. who did you heard that from?
  19. again, Mattress Mac should stick to selling furniture instead of holding the teams he "supports" hostage by threatening to withdraw donations if they dont make the decisions he percieves to be in the best interest of the team (as well as himself). He did it with the Texans this past year, and now he's doing it with North Texas. Having a lot of money and an interest in sports doesnt necessarily make you an expert on anything. He can do whatever he wants with his money, but I think its pretty lousy (and myopic) to pull support because your buddy (whether it's VY or DD) didnt get what you thought he deserved. For him to think he knows what is best for an organization over someone like RV or Kubiak who has to deal with this stuff day in and day out is absurd. I appreciate the initial $1mil donation, and I hope this is nothing more than emotion over the firing of a friend.
  20. ha I think its hilarious that this guy posted a thread asking about how we treat the players, coaches, etc on this board and there is all-out-war going on between the posters. IRONY! Welcome to the board!
  21. my thoughts exactly.
  22. seriously, this thread might as well be entitled "here's something that doesnt have a chance of happening" Major is just getting into his coaching career. He hasnt even been at Rice a full year. I think he was at Syracuse for a year before that and helped out at Texas a year or two after he graduated. Make no mistake, I think he will someday be a great coach, and he is already a great person, but he isnt going to be making that jump next year. This is a really really important hire for NT. Rick isnt going to take a risk like that with that in mind.
  23. i think you might be thinking too far into this, Emmitt. I agree with Gramma, they will view it as support- and that's a good thing. I hope there are a lot of people there next saturday to see Dickey's last game at Fouts, as well as the seniors that were a part of the past few years.
  24. well in that case, you may want to get a 20 x 6 sign
  25. this is not an uncommon practice. Florida did it with Ron Zook, other schools are doing it right now. I dont think it makes our administrators look incompetent in the least. I think it makes them look gracious, and shows a great deal of foresight. They recognize they have to begin moving towards grabbing a coach ASAP, so that we dont waste anymore time with recruitment. It gives Dickey the chance to finish out the season with his players, and puts him out on the market for any other institutions looking for a new coach. I dont think they could have done this any better for Dickey or the University.
