agreed, though I personally think he could have done better. Wonder if Bama would have had any interest? Im sure he has several ties down there coming from Auburn.

...and we know they are not actually spelled 'SMUt'. whats the difference?

I don't know about that. I was at the USC/Oregon game, and USC looked pretty sloppy at times. Booty threw several balls at the feet of the wide receivers. Oregon just played really poorly in that game turning the ball over a couple times in the red zone and couldn't capitalize on USC's slow start. USC turned it on in the end to win handily, but keep in mind they also played several other games against lesser opponents close this year, and Ohio State has PLENTY of speed on both sides of the ball. While I have little interest in seeing a rematch and don't believe it should happen, I still feel Michigan and Ohio State are the best 2 teams in the nation. I'll agree with you on one point, however, and that is I think Notre Dame has been overrated all year playing a weak schedule. Look to the USC and Michigan games for further proof.

The polls are rigged!

well this all worked itself out over the weekend, in my opinion! The way I see it, Boise State WILL play the winner of OU/Nebraska in the Fiesta SEC will probably have 2 teams in the BCS, SEC champ and LSU Michigan will play in Rose Bowl USC destroyed an overrated Notre Dame team and will play Ohio State (assuming they dont choke the UCLA game) I dont really care about any of the games except maybe and LSU/Michigan rosebowl and Im interested to see how Boise represents the non-BCS in the fiesta. with any luck, it will be a win, which would put non-BCS teams at 2-0 in BCS games. -

it's actually a Buckeye, which is a nut -
well, rice only has 5k total students (3k undergrad). Taking that into consideration, 12k isnt all that bad on a holiday weekend. If we had that same attendance to enrollment ratio, we'd have like 80k at our games.

FW*Telegram Defiant Dickey defends results

no question. to get outscored like that against a school like MTSU- at home - is reprehensible. To me, that is what sealed DD's fate. -
if by some off chance Rice ends up in the New Orleans Bowl by losing to SMU this weekend, I'll be rooting for Rice. they havent been to a bowl in 45 years- something we can all identify with- and I think it would be neat thing for them. If it's anyone else, I'll root for the Sun Belt champ- even if its MTSU.

i didnt realize our athletic department was in a position to say "sorry, you arent classy enough to donate your millions, thanks anyways" im not arguing whether or not what he did was right or wrong, I just think it turned out fine. He annoys me, I get tired of him involving himself in everything. On the flipside, he donated a hell of a lot of money- he's entitled to his opinion, whether he's right or wrong.

thank you! this is a good thing to hear peoples. I still dont understand the "holding hostage" comments. we didnt have to take the money, nor did we have to appropriate it to the things he requested- they could always send it back. He got emotional and wrote a scathing letter to support a friend he felt had been unjustly fired. Big deal. He just has the means to make his opinion more audible than the rest of us. The guy gave us a million bucks. That has to count for something... yes, he beats me down, yes he is often in it for what he can get out of it, but in the end, him making a big deal out of it just got our names read in the headlines of national media several times a day! if i had to do it all again, Id want it to work out the exact same way.

this pretty much sums up what i was trying to say- in a lot less words

Im not disputing is effectiveness as a highschool coach. In fact, I would love for him to translate that success to the Div 1 level, and all the better if its at North Texas. I just think everyone ought to tap the brakes a little bit on this love affair with a guy who has only proven he can win at the highschool level. Im not saying he wont someday be a great coach, Im not saying other organizations havent taken an interest in him because of his unparalled success at said level, its just the odds are not in his favor. North Texas really needs this hire to be a homerun

well, he actually spent 3 years at Tech as a running backs coach before taking the Houston job. I agree, Briles has done a really good job with UH, ive seen them play a couple times this year, but you cant tell me that the time he spent at tech was of little value, or that he didnt learn things that have helped him at Houston

I will try to find it, but I read it on one articles about the Board of Regents... if someone else has that, please post it! thanks -
ok I see what you are trying to say about going from college to pros, but I dont think its the same thing. I would argue the jump from highschool to D1A has a lot more added job duties and responsiblity than a jump from college to NFL. Thats just my opinion. I dont think it is an accurate relative comparison. For it to "work" i mean when was the last time a guy took a team to a bowl game? had successful seasons? I have never heard of it. I think theres something to be said for spending time as a coordinator before running the show. College is very different than highschool. In highschool, you do the best with what you are given with your zoning (granted places like Katy and Southlake have "recruits" of their own those are exceptions). In college, you have to sell the program, the school, the town and get them in there before you even get to talk about X's and O's. Its a lot more involved. I think the time (even if it is a short period- and more than ONE YEAR in the early 90s) spent as a coordinator, working with and seeing how a head coach handles his responsibilities, delegates power, prepares, etc is extremely valuable. Im not saying Todd Dodge couldnt be the one exception that transcends all other highschool coaching hires and is the greatest thing we've seen since Hayden Fry, but I think this next hire is absolutely CRUCIAL to NT's future, and I wouldnt feel real comfortable rolling the dice on a hire with a typically lower rate of success.

want to explain your point? right now im inferring Johnson went from highschool to NFL? im not up to date on every hiring the cowboys have made over the past 30 years.

Eagle1855 replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
only a north texas board could take a highschool football conversation into a we hate UT thread derailment. good god I hope we hire a coach soon, I cant take all this much longer! haha -
I think Dickey made about 100K more than that. Secondly, as soon as someone can show me a time when a highschool coach going straight to head coach of a D1 program has worked, I will be on board. In fact, if someone can show me that it works out even 25% of the time I will be shocked.
-
yeah and Im sure Todd Dodge will also be a great COORDINATOR whenever he starts out.

yup...I wrote a novel! i dont know how much of that they really take into consideration, but I think its a GREAT idea and its about time.

ditto. if it had been trimmed out and fitted with the appropriate logos (sponsors and conference), it might have been a cool thing for one game. the way it was done made it look bush-league AT BEST
