  1. also, water is wet and fire is hot.
  2. bingo run some blitz's, stunts.... something. ANYTHING. I mean, if you're going to get torched, might as well have it happen while you're going after the QB.
  3. hell yes it is. I like the bowl shape design. And they are hosting UT this weekend. Very niiiice. On a sidenote, I dig the avatar. Obviously.
  4. Unless we start getting some pressure up front, it's gonna be tough-going for anyone we put back there in single coverage.
  5. yeah I meant to post that as well. That SMU team won 2 games that season... one over "perennial football powerhouse" U-Conn, the other was our beloved NT. Ahh memory lane. Anyways, back to the topic at hand. Eliminate costly turnovers, we win last week's game. Add in a couple defensive plays, and it's a pretty good beating. If we improve as much between now and the 22nd, as we did between OU and SMU, we'll finally post a W over FAU (though it pains me to say "finally")
  6. I dont know, but Im guessing the 1989 U of Houston team is up there... they posted 1,021 yards on the Ponies on the way to a 94-21 victory that year. A lot on interesting quotes from the 1989 article... UH calls it execution; so does SMU By JERRY WIZIG Staff After the Astrodome scoreboard mercifully was turned off Saturday, the fallout remained on both sides following the Houston Cougars' 95-21 demolition job on SMU. In the wake of the first 1,000-yard show by an NCAA team, there is conjecture as to how the Cougars might have taken a little pity. Punt on third down, for example? "I thought about that a couple of times," UH Coach Jack Pardee said Sunday. "But you can't be hypocritical. How do you tell your own players to work hard all week and execute, then you do something like that?" SMU Coach Forrest Gregg and his players were angry. They felt the Cougars needlessly poured it on during their NCAA-record 1,021-yard show. UH averaged 11.9 yards per play. Gregg noted Pardee pulled quarterback Andre Ware after a six-touchdown, 517-yard first-half passing performance "or they could easily have scored 100 or whatever they liked." But noting backup David Klingler was throwing deep passes until late, Gregg added, "I didn't appreciate that, whoever was responsible." Gregg's emotions seemingly had cooled only a little by Sunday. "I won't dwell on it now," he said. "It's over and done with. We will never, ever forget it. "I've been in that situation myself. The object is to win, not to embarrass your opponent. The emphasis here was to score as many points and get as many yards as possible. That's not a good feat against a bunch of freshmen. "But if that makes them (the Cougars) feel good, I'm glad for them." Pardee said he understood Gregg's emotions. "I told Gregg that this situation isn't what college football is all about," Pardee said. "I can understand his feelings. It's demoralizing. "I'd been dreading this game all season. How do you get it over with when you stress good execution to your players all the time? "My goal has never been to gain 1,000 yards. We just executed well. When the defense comes up to take away the short routes, our receivers react and run deep. That's the way they're taught." Offensive coordinator John Jenkins, the man who calls the Cougars' plays, responded, "We had no goal of 1,000 (yards), no sir. That didn't figure into it at all. "If all I was interested in was the statistics, or Andre's chances for the Heisman Trophy, we'd have left him in there to throw for about 12 touchdowns and 1,200 yards. "I tried to remind our guys during the week that we'd been through three spring practices here. We've had about 15 scrimmages in that time. In two or three, we were casual and lollygagging around and looked terrible. That would happen to us this time if we went out and played SMU with that kind of attitude. "They (the Mustangs) do a great job, but they're just freshmen, yet you have to take them seriously, like you take any game seriously." SMU players indicated they would take the Cougars more than just seriously in the future. Said quarterback Mike Romo, "Coach told us that we'll be here for four years and to remember this. We won't forget." "I don't think even Oklahoma would do something like this. I'm sure they wouldn't," Tre Giller said. "We're going to be the power someday, and things will change," receiver Michael Bowen said. "We'll remember this." When Gregg noted starters like Manny Hazard, Paul Smith and Brian Williams were still running pass routes late in the game, Jenkins said, "We don't have anybody else. We were using everyone we had, every walk-on." Receivers Verlond Brown, Kevin Mason and Henry LeBlanc were already out for the year with injuries. Tracy Good (leg injury) was held out. Kody Smith hurt a knee on the game's first play. With Kimble Anders and Chuck Weatherspoon the team's only two superbacks, Anders had to play inside receiver and Weatherspoon played nearly the entire game. "I had more running backs than this in the USFL with a 40-something-man roster," Jenkins said of his Houston Gamblers days. "We had Todd Fowler, Sam Harrell and Daryl Clark. If Spoon had been hurt, we'd have had to use five receivers or put an offensive lineman in the backfield." Walk-on Craig Alexander already was an alternate receiver. Jenkins also used walk-ons Tim Woods and Derrick Reeves plus freshman Marcus Grant. Grant had practiced just two weeks after the NCAA declared him eligible under Proposition 48 guidelines. Jenkins tried to add another body, Jeff Adams, an equipment manager who had played receiver at Baytown Lee. But the NCAA said that since Adams receives financial aid for books and tuition, he would count on the football scholarship roster if suited up. "We played everyone capable of playing, outside of people that we are redshirting," Jenkins said. He may put out a call for volunteers this week in the student newspaper, the Daily Cougar. UH's offense let the final seconds expire at the SMU 17 without going for the touchdown to breach the 100-point mark. The last series included three straight running plays by Anders, a shovel pass to Anders, an incomplete screen pass and a pass to Woods for no gain. Gregg, asked if he still considers Pardee a friend, replied, "This is not a good day to be asking me that." Pardee said he didn't know what could have been done to alleviate the Mustangs' situation. "How do you get over the death penalty?" he asked.
  7. I think our O-line play has been one of the highlights of this season. It's the D-line that needs some serious help. Good pick up. Keep em coming (regardless of what Captain Kangaroo says...)
  8. ditto...all this talk about Rodge all but having the starter spot locked up when he arrives is absurd. Also, Riley isnt going to be able to run like he did in HS in college-- he'll get killed. I've seen him at couple events this year, and there's no way that guy is 6'0.
  9. I think this thread is clearly shows we are 0 - 2. Also, Dave Chappelle has an interesting take on how women dress in one of his stand up routines. Look it up sometime. It's funny... unless you don't like stuff that's funny or you are always looking for something about which to be offended.
  10. well example 2 was locked down because Dodge2007 doesnt subscribe to "board think" , and that apparently rubs some people the wrong way, enough that they resort to name calling... boo hoo... I'd like to see the thread about What's Hot and What's not opened back up and then combined with the thread about the "belly girls". We can do a letter by letter assessment of what in fact IS hot and what is not.
  11. Well this was a fallacious argument from the get-go, I think it's important everyone understand that. It makes no sense to go into a game and "allow" your top-10 opponent to score 79 points so that you don't show the lousy team in Dallas what defensive schemes you are running.
  12. Im not panicking, im just pointing out the fact that our defense is about as exciting as Amish porn. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to see our offense after just two games. I don't know how many times a QB has passed for 600 yards in a losing effort, but I imagine it's close to "rarely ever" bordering on "just about never"... I also think SMU would be a middle of the road Sun Belt team. So for me, this is indicative of how we'd fair against our better conference mates. I will say this, if we improve as much between game 2 and 3 as we did between game 1 and 2, we might actually beat FAU and get Dodge his first W. Great step forward, just surprised to see Defense our #1 problem.
  13. Just about ANY secondary will struggle when there's no pass rush. You need both to have a strong defense.
  14. While "your all dumbasses" is a hilarious statement, I do agree with the sentiment. I dont care if Meager threw for 1000 yards. We lost. Our defense cant (or wont) make adjustments. We can't win any games with a defense that doesn't make adjustments. We have no pas-rush. I miss Booger. 0 and 2 feels like hell. There are many things I saw at the game that I am really excited about, but there are just as many that are red flags that show we've still got a ways to go. I don't think SMU is very good, so I was wrong about that. If this is the best team they've had in 20 years, I almost (almost) feel bad for their fans.
  15. uhh, maybe Im alone, but I DO care how many interceptions a guy throws... especially when they are part of the reason we lost the game. I imagine it matters to Dodge as well. Im excited about things to come, but Meager is going to have to throw less than 3 picks a game for us to win game consistently. We had a chance to tie the ball game, he threw the pick that put the nail in the coffin. Of course, it would be nice to see some semblance of a ground game to take some pressure off him, but you take what the defense gives you. I'm also sending out an APB out for the North Texas defense. Last seen somewhere in Denton in 2004. If found, please exercise caution when apprehending. Is very aggressive and should be considered dangerous. Or at least, it was at one time.
  16. ha was thinking the same thing... who the hell are the mean "En"? "I been Mean En to get this scoreboard fixed..."
  17. screw that! I hope OU wins by 100!
  18. and condescension. In other words, beat them at their own game. They are the inferior football program here, folks. When was the last time they won ANYTHING of meaning? When was the last time they went to a bowl game? Exactly.
  19. logical honesty has never been appreciated over here, watch yourself! Homerism or bust! UNT-119 SMU-2 (our coverage kinda breaks down, we take a 23 yard sack in the end zone)
  20. maybe Dr Bataille will get on here and post her thoughts as well. That would be awesome and not weird at all.
  21. just ignore them.... then, after we win, flood the board with things like "you guys have a good team, you'll get it back on track" "Saw some good things out of your team, best of luck with the rest of your season" "To your credit, your guys played really hard. Tough break" This will drive them crazier than any venomous statement you could possibly muster.
  22. Completely agree. My dad and I were watching the game and were commenting on what an asshat that guy was, and how frustrating it is that the jerkwads cant give any credit where it's due. (of course that's my language, not his). Guy kept saying how Louisville was "letting" them hang around. REALLY? I almost called into the radio station here in Houston to go off on that this morning, decided against it because I had done it yesterday (dont want to be THAT guy). They were talking about how UT and Louisville had no business keeping the game that close, and I'm thinking, MAYBE THE SUNBELT ISNT AS BAD AS YOU ALL THINK? I mean, a somewhat logical person would have to arrive at that conclusion at some point, right? It annoyed me even more that the conversation was going on on a houston station because both of the hometown teams lost to SunBelt teams last year. In fact, 3 out of the 4 sunbelt victories over C-USA were Texas schools. Oops. It will be interesting to see how we do in the rest of our OOC games this weekend. FAU/Ok-Lite and us at SMU... both big opportunities to accidentally hang with teams we arent supposed to hang with.
  23. the last part really brings it home for me. There's brilliance in that succinct summation.
  24. GREAT game for the blue raiders. made a few mistakes down the stretch that cost them dearly, but a very VERY solid showing for the sun belt. Im not into moral victories, but they and ASU took a lot of steps in the right direction this week. Should be interesting to see how all this translates into SBC play the rest of the year (barring MTSU's first mishap with FAU). and all this from a SBC "hater"...
