Realistic expectations come into focus
Aquila_Viridis replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
I'd like to know what a REALISTIC expectation for next week's score is. Is it a 100 point margin? I'd say that would be a realistic expectation for a Division II school or maybe a Division I school without a coach. Anyway the final margin in this game is not nearly as much a concern as the infantile way this team started. Some people seem to think that the coach started the job this week. It DID look that way. What has been going on? -
Oklahoma debating conference options
Aquila_Viridis replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't think it makes any difference. We are a joke or unknown at best. Triple what we pay for a coach and the same result: a team completely unprepared. You can either motivate and train or not. That was not promising. Promise is the only thing we would have to offer a conference. -
If y'all are getting together somewhere in Austin please post location here or PM me and I will probably be there. Thanks. Adam

Actually I'm hostile toward them. UT system droppings need to dry up and quit using otherwise beneficial resources. They would maybe make a good UNT system campus. We will happily accept the PUF allocation.

At what point does the WAC become a good option?
Aquila_Viridis replied to shaft's topic in Mean Green Football
Regional who cares? If we can't make a rivalry with UH we may as well give up. I hope I never have to read another post on here pining away for a rival in San Marcos or San Antonio or San Arlington. How about San Nacogdoches or San Huntsville? -
The fact that there is a division about this within the university - and reflected on this board - is typical of all that is wrong with North Texas/UNT when it comes to the failure to achieve potential over the many years. WHY is it that North Texas/UNT suffers so bad from this division and wavering, holding it back over decades??? Other schools overcome this crap. North Texas/UNT wallows in it eternally. Absence of leadership. Won't someone take the reins of this animal and get it in fighting shape?! These administrators should be ashamed. I hear people down here saying 'UNT' sometimes. That's only because someone gave them that idea; years ago no one would have said 'UNT'. It's a terrible idea that should have been axed by a decent leader. I understand why someone had the idea initially, but if they had sense they would have questioned this baby idea using their own powers of critical thinking (if it existed) and seen that any merits of it are far outweighed by the downsides. What that shows is really weak thinking, inability to go to the second level. Unfortunately that too often has characterized the 'leadership' coming out of the administration building or wherever they have gone now.

If these NT greeks have half the swagger of that monkey, please get them in.

But Aquila Viridis aqtually IS my name!

Not bad azz. My impression was at the end our guys thought LR was just going to quit. It was textbook how to lose a close game. We would be killing all SB teams if our team moved the ball around like they should. I can never see much of a plan or coordination in our possessions. Happy they pulled out a great season with the tournament run, but DAMN.

Unt Launching "branding Initiative"
Aquila_Viridis replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
I think some are missing Rick's point about the chant. It is a great example of one of the small things that when combined with a series of other small things make a big difference. These things have to be coordinated and if they are it makes a great impression. UNT has not demonstrated great ability to coordinate such things to a collective dramatic result. I do believe someone at the U should take responsibility for it. -
There was a time I would have supported the alumni assoc logo as the main graphic identity of the university. Not anymore. Many years ago I noted that the star was the best graphic element we had going. Unfortunately, A&M since has adopted it. It is on their basketball court. I suppose they are trying to get away from the 'A&M'. Also the alumni logo appears derivative of the 'old' aTm logo. The new eagle logo is an excellent graphic symbol for the university. I hope that anyone pining away for the alumni logo is not detracting from adoption of the eagle logo as a pervasive symbol. If you don't like eagles you're unAmerican and I hope one flies off with your little dog.

Whew! I was just hoping it wasn't going to be for onanism or frottage.

North Carolina and Southern California are directionals too. This is an issue? North Texas is different in that the term mainly means a metro area. I'd like to see us play against other metros like Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Pitt, Miami, BC, San Diego St., Boise etc. We could have a Cities League. It will help to develop more national recognition of D/FW as 'North Texas'. It is actually very modern, a metro well defined but not by the name of just one of its member municipalities.

I'm Just Not As Confident As Some Of You
Aquila_Viridis replied to emmitt01's topic in Mean Green Football
I have raged on UNT administration in the past, but one thing I am very confident about is that if there is any opportunity to lobby with officials of desired conferences at this point our people are doing it. I don't think North Texas can be kept down much longer. In some respects we are not down. At least we are recognized as a National University. We belong at least with the Memphis and Houstons of the world and someday will be much higher in many ways. The main thing we have to watch out for is the soulless UT system droppings and their PUF support. This is a challenge but Tech has managed and they are in the worst location possible so it can be done. -
Actually this rebranding is the most ingenious idea anyone on here has had in awhile. It's simple. We just start calling the league 'Conference USA' and we'll see if they are man enough to fight us for it. My guess is they'll back down, and if they do it with grace maybe we'll let them have our old name.

Expanded Sunbelt And New Bowl Game In Sa
Aquila_Viridis replied to UNT Fan From a Distance's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree. Shut those schools out. And yes there probably are others saying 'shut North Texas out'. The interesting thing is that maybe academic rankings hold back the athletic program. As of last year in the US News NT was in the lowest tier of 'National Universities'. This is something that would factor into conference affiliation. I haven't looked yet to see where some of our would-be brethren stack up. -
Expanded Sunbelt And New Bowl Game In Sa
Aquila_Viridis replied to UNT Fan From a Distance's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah sure. So? So the UT system wants to drown us in their guano droppings. We're supposed to just go along with that? We know everyone wants to keep us down. Helping others up is only going to spread talent pool even thinner and none of us will have a prayer to compete with those further up the totem pole. Anybody going along with the 'let's make local rivals' idea is being DUPED! We have to play offense AND defense. -

Dude don't be baited by UTSA supporters. What a joke. Go away UTSA and stop wasting state money. Never mention UTSA next to our school again. DIE DIE DIE -
Mountain West Conference Meeting Today
Aquila_Viridis replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
We lost most of the bowls and both tournament games. I don't see fan base getting any bigger in the current league. If MWC doesn't work out then CUSA and SBC should swap some members and LT join one. There is no opponent in this SBC that many people will ever care about whether we beat them. -
NT ain't going to the WAC. I think both the WAC and CUSA as we know it will fall apart. We should get best of CUSA and Belt plus La Tech together and make a new conference and just get it over with. Losers in the WAC and SBC going back to FCS. Staying put NOT an option. South Alabama? In an era of sustainability, this is not sustainable. The landscape is shifting, we HAVE TO move and we CAN influence. I don't know why all the hate by others for La Tech. This should be a regular opponent for us. LSU keeps ULs down - makes the media use Lafayette city name etc., a stigma not shared by La Tech. They at least have tradition, the bobcat do not have that, LT should not have to suffer the same fate.

Since not enough people have posted on this topic, I feel compelled to offer some guiding principles. I personally like the color combination bright green and black, but that is not North Texas. There should not be black accents or black stripes etc but if needed for an outline OK. Otherwise all green and white. All athletic branding should aggressively focus on the current eagle logo, the full one not the head alone. The eagle should be a green eagle whenever possible, not white. The eagle represents NT and its people. We are the Mean Green, not the Mean White. The 70s flying worm belongs in the 70s. If we had stayed with it up to now there would be no discussion but its tenure was brief and now there should be long-term commitment to the current logo which is excellent. Other than the colors green and white I am not too concerned what they put on the shirts and pants. What matters is what is on the helmet. Let's follow Texas' lead on this and put just our symbol, not any letters, on the helmet. If there is effectively a way to have a green eagle outlined on a green helmet and have it clearly recognizable, that would be best, otherwise, green eagle on a white helmet, no stripes. The green eagle logo is awesome. If displayed enough, the people of the region will rally around it. The University of North Texas needs to essentially take over the North Texas region in that regard, with the symbol, not the words 'North Texas'. The association with the region will happen by itself if the symbol is all over the region. (Stickers, flags, magnets, posters and billboards needed.) The helmet is a strong way to connect with that recognition. Once people realize they are stuck with the presence of the symbol and its association with the region and thus themselves, they will start to care if the teams it stands for are good. When they care, they will contribute. One might ask if that is a valid thing to create. I think it is, I don't think it's fair that the people of the North Texas region are not as well represented in the arena of college athletics as they should be. Sure, TCU has an incredible team, but they do not represent the huge majority of people of the region and they never will. In sum, full green eagle logo on helmet.

Wac's Benson Going After Unt & Ul. Again.

4 Teams You Would Like To Home & Home With
Aquila_Viridis replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
If we get MWC invite yes take it, but many of those other 11 schools are also hoping individually they will be chosen for something. It would benefit these schools to get together and chart their own course together instead of waiting for some other group to accept them. The fact you could put together 12 decent schools in such a tight geographic region with meaningful rivalries is very compelling. On the other hand, CUSA as it stands today is ridiculous. And by the way, I say 'decent' above recognizing that joining such collective will in itself immediately raise the decency level of some of the programs. Further, all their status would improve as members over time. I agree with you that the SB - and further I'll add that CUSA substantially as it is now - will not have such an effect on their respective members.
