  1. I have investigated their location and as if being in San Antonio wasn't enough, the main campus' ready access to the Leon Creek Greenway provides enough jealousy to adequately fuel my rage and hatred of utSA. It is too bad that an away game would not involve going anywhere near the campus though. This should not be an object of pity however; only spite. They are like a panhandler with a cool hat but a detestable attitude and a foul odor.
  2. Since there is no way they could have a swamp in that arid place, couldn't they have put in a Lazy River like at Hyatt Hill Country? At least TX State has a river and springs. I can't properly hate on them in place of Monroe unless they have something that makes me almost want to like them. Connection via roller coaster to Fiesta Texas would do it.
  3. UTSA is the new Northeast Louisiana University of Monroe. I hate them already. Though I have been to San Antonio several times I have no idea where this UT System dropping's campus is. At least Lame-O had a swamp on campus.
  4. He's going to find there is a big difference between this NT defense and high school. He can see how this same thing worked out for SoMiss.
  5. Thursday was an opportunity for me to go around campus during a school day for the first time in many years. It is still a vibrant and positive place. The stadium is an outstanding extension of the campus especially with the bridge. Wins at home definitely increase the energy level. I toured a lot of campuses with my son. UNT stands up really well in comparison.
  6. Totally agree. Years ago it was evident that if the powers that be at UNT cared about winning, they would organize a campaign to raise the funds to hire a super coach and staff who could win and recruit despite our then humble facilities. They did not do that. Complaining about attendance is a smoke screen, and where there's smoke there's fire. It's plain: people do not want to come when there is a really big chance of seeing 'your' team lose. University of North Texas would be supported by the people of North Texas if those residents thought they would likely be on the winning side by affiliating themselves with the university. It is a classic chicken and egg problem and the only way for the cycle to be broken is for the university leadership to decide to be a winner and take charge of the situation. Instead they sort of keep expecting that some critical mass might rise on its own, and don't even seem to care whether it does or not. We could look at this coach and see that he was not of the caliber needed, and that is because the school raised money for other things. Stop being a loser North Texas, and don't ask me for more money or support. GO and get it from others who are not already contributing. Then use it to pay for a winner. $600K or whatever, I know was a big jump, but it needed to be a lot more. I said it before it was built: that stadium won't do anything without a great coach in it. And the stadium not only does not pay for a coach, it apparently used up all the fundraising mind power the university leadership could muster. ACCEPT the fact that college football is a big reason why colleges are so prominent now and so heavily attended and expensive, and get in the game!
  7. As one who has to make a long trip to see a game, I can say that the likelihood of seeing a win is a big factor in the decision whether to make the trip. I don't look at that on a game-by-game basis. It is more based on trends across several games. If we win 6 or 7 of any 10 sequential games, there would be a large increase in attendance and enthusiasm, that would persist, grow or fade depending on the performance across the next series of games. Unfortunately it is much easier to lose attendance than to grow it. I don't expect much impact from any one win, well unless we Beat Georgia.
  8. For this week I say: Beat Georgia!
  9. If next week every North Texas player brought the same level of intensity for 60 minutes as Derek did in the second half today, North Texas would beat Georgia. His clearly evident will to win made me very proud as a fan and supporter of the Mean Green. He was certainly not the only one who played with determination and focus today, but that was great leadership on his part. GO MEAN GREEN!
  10. There are some questions to be answered but one thing was immediately clear. He moves in a way that shows more potential than anyone else I have ever seen at QB for the Mean Green. If he can live up to that potential we are in for some good times.
  11. Having traveled across Arkansas and a good portion of Texas to attend the game, I am happy to say it was a great experience. That was not a powerful opponent but in the past they would have had success against our defense anyway. This NT defense played really well. The offense has some great players and executed better than I have seen in a long time. Much appreciation for anyone who was over on the sunny side! My wife was happy there is funnel cake but would like to have better funnel cake. The band looks bigger and hey they played YYZ and Carry On. I cannot fault such a band.
  12. I saw someone with a UAB shirt on last weekend. First time ever.
  13. If we're going to be on the map, we need to move to better territory. Unfortunately I think some are happy just to be on the map.
  14. Shovel pass.
  15. I thought it was going to be smashing mailboxes, spraying graffiti, busting car windows and stuff like that.
  16. I have no issue with setting achievable but difficult goals. 6 wins or more is not going to be easy this year. It would certainly be a huge step in the right direction, and it is a meaningful number of wins. Honestly I will be astonished if it happens, but it IS doable. We are where we are. In the overall scheme of things, yes it's deplorable that 6 wins against this competition is a stretch for North Texas in 2013, but we have to look forward, at least that is, as long as we can keep looking.
  17. I agree with the part about firing the AD and being ashamed. Do you realize how much bigger North Texas is than some of the schools it can't compete with? I do not agree with anyone saying Houston has better academics. Basically in the grand scheme of college rankings they are both crap schools. Frankly so is TCU just not quite as bad. Academically TCU is about as good as Tennessee. Wow that's some lofty heights. Get out of here. Here is the problem for UNT sports. UNT IS a 'commuter' school. The reason I say so is that as student, I never felt like I had to join some cult to get a degree. And at the time that is EXACTLY what I needed: a place that was there to allow me to achieve a goal, like a workplace, that did not make me feel like my whole life was wrapped up in the place, even in the times I lived on campus. I went on to Virginia and while there were many people there I really liked, I was back in that 'all or nothing' kind of a place like Missouri and that made me not like the school experience (leaving aside the social experience) and that was in GRADUATE school. VIrginia is no real high water mark for sports but I think most of us would feel good about UNT having a sports program at that level. However UNT is not ever going to be a comparable school from a student experience standpoint and I am starting to think maybe it should not aspire to be that. I don't know exactly what that means for the UNT sports program but as a student I found it to be an annoyance. As an alumnus I have found it to be largely a disappointment and embarassment. I am about done with trying to help it to be a tool to transform UNT into something that maybe UNT should not be. It is likely anyway that UNT sports will never be successful without that transformation occurring first. UNT had made a choice back in the 80s when I was there. Maybe all this frustration is because at some point that choice was reversed but not with conviction, and a giant mess ensued.
  18. We should trade the marching band in for the Neville Brothers who do a rousing version of this song.
  19. On behalf of our brethren MT, I would like to send out a big FLICK YOU to Gene and Ohio State, cause you could just as well substitute 'North Texas' or several other similarly situated schools wherever he mentions MT.
  20. The athletic department does not run the show, and 90 is right, the ones who do run it, do not care whether the teams win or lose.
  21. The actual headline was 'Most UTSA Students Still Hoping to Get into The Real UT in 2015'.
  22. After reading this thread I have concluded that North Texas should give up athletics.
  23. I used to get very worked up about us being left behind. At this point I can live with winning most of the time regardless of who we play. For the foreseeable future there will be no running with better established programs or developing meaningful rivalries. I just want to see our administration commit to frequent winning, at whatever level they can accomplish that at. First I guess we need to have an administration though. I have to travel several hours to see North Texas play no matter where it is. Now I don't even have the easy Jonesboro trip. I won't do it if there is a high probability of losing, so continuation of the current trend will make the Mean Green irrelevant for me pretty soon.
  24. Oh and I'm dubbing the flame motif, "A green light to greyness." That is the effect it has had on me.
  25. I don't see much on which to dispute a dire 2-10 prediction. The unfortunate minority of students who show up will eventually find, as we alumni have, that North Texas probably won't change when it comes to athletics. I think some who shape what our school is, find that comedic athletic programs fit their vision for North Texas: a place for people to come who just don't care about the whole school spirit foolishness. Maintaining some profile for the dismal programs allows the programs to serve as a beacon of sorts. A flame for cynical, lazy stoner moths looking for a laugh. To those who think the new stadium is a sign of a commitment to improve athletics, it is much more likely a sign that someone finally became annoyed that the school harbored such an eyesore as the old stadium. They really don't care what happens in the new facility; they are just happy there is a new facility.
