  1. Why balk at taking a Texas History course? If you live in Texas shouldn't you know her history?
  2. I think we're on the same page. Education isn't a one-size-fits-all thing. Every student should look at his/her needs & make an informed choice about their education. By the way, I share your concerns about on-line classes. In my opinion it's one more way of trying to do things on the cheap. That's rarely a good plan.
  3. Hi Screaming Eagle 66, I don't mean to paint community colleges with a broad brush. They have a place in education and, when everything works well, they serve a valuable function. Much depends on the faculty the community college employs. Often they are well prepared to teach their subject, sometimes they are not. Our local community college has several well-trained biologists (my area) who are full-time faculty and who do an excellent job of teaching introductory biology, microbiology, and other freshman & sophomore courses. However, they also employ many part time instructors, many of whom are poorly qualified to teach college level biology. It's true that university classes are often too big and are sometimes taught by teaching fellows (grad students, at least in my area, rarely teach anything other than labs). I think the biggest academic failing at universities I'm familiar with is the huge classes at the freshman level. But, even with that failing, it's still a university, with all the excitement & intellectual atmosphere that goes with being at a major university. That's something the community college student misses out on. I know there are good reasons for going the community college route - lower costs, close to home, & small classes with lots of attention from the instructor - but I still think academically prepared students should choose to attend a university if they can afford to. I'm biased. I loved my time at UT & UNT and I still love being in a university environment. My son, when he's a bit older, will be encouraged to attend the best university he can get into - and hopefully that will be UNT.
  4. Oh! And Fake Lonnie Finch, what courses do you want those finance, economics, & business law classes to replace?
  5. So much to think about: 1) Universities have a choice - a bigger core means a smaller major. I would rather my biology majors have a 3000-level course in genetics than a 1000-level course in music appreciation. 2) There is pressure from politicians to 'dumb-down' the college education & make it quicker & cheaper. If that's what they want they should just invest in community colleges. A true liberal arts education is expensive & time-consuming - and critical if we want an educated citizenry. Of course that name's part of the problem - some idiots think a 'liberal' arts education is an effort to turn out political liberals. 3) Dual-credit courses are, in my humble opinion, a joke. This is an integral part of the campaign to make education cheaper & quicker - never-mind the effect on quality. Universities should look more closely at a students's transcripts & award dual-credit courses college credit only if they truly were taught on a college level - including a stipulation that the instructor would have passed muster on college accreditation (usually meaning that they had a master's or equivalent in the subject). 4) OldGuyStudent - I ain't calling B.S., but where are history majors required to take a course in molecular biology? Yeah, I'm calling b.s. There. I feel better now.
  6. Personally, I'll never forgive Todd Dodge for burning DT's redshirt in a meaningless series against Arkie State. Stupid, stupid, stupid! Did I mention it was stupid?
  7. Brett, Thanks for the great coverage of UNT in the HOD Bowl & throughout the season. A special thanks for ignorring the idiots.
  8. This is a positive. It puts as much distance between UNT & MTSU, WKSU, & the Florida twins as possible. Have I ever mentioned that I hate the Sun Belt?
  9. Please come back for another game & bring some friends. There's nothing wrong with being a Navy fan & cheering for the Mean Green. The Heart of Dallas Bowl would be a good setting for a few beers with a few Navy buds!
  10. "It’s not the kind of morally conservative Christian campus I knew at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor." Thank God. Oh, that doesn't sound right....
  11. I predict that if we score more points than the Owls then we will win. I don't care how we do it. I don't care how many turn-overs we have. I don't care what percentage of our plays are runs. Just win baby.
  12. They all sound great EXCEPT the New Orleans Bowl. I hope to never, ever see UNT play another member of the SBC, ever.
  13. First of all Kram is right, it's ludicrous to post a negative thread after a game like this. UNT won 55 to 14. Fifty-freaking-five to 14. Enjoy it! Heck, even UNT90 has become a light-headed, giggly optimist. Turn-overs? Who cares about turn-overs? Many of y'all were whining about Mac's conservative run-first & last offense. Part of the price of gambling is that sometimes you lose the darn ball. That's okay - we won! Live with it!
  14. This is a bad team. Beat them.
  15. Be smart. Use the 1st quarter to set up the 4th. Trust your defense & your game plan. Adjust to what your opponent shows you. Don't panic & don't pay attention to the folks who insist on negativity.
  16. FFR, you really need to apologize. You're a great supporter of UNT, but so is MG61.
  17. Had Dodge not burned DT's redshirt for a single series 4 years ago we'd have him back next season. Assuming he kept the starting job, & I think he would, think about his numbers.
  18. Professor, I applaud your school spirit. However, I suspect a low-life lawyer is salivating at the thought of bringing a first admendment suit against the instructor, her/hisdepartment chair, and our beloved university. What the student was expressing was unfortunatte, but still they had a constitutional right to express themselves. I'll save you all the trouble and award myself a -1 for this post.
  19. Travis, you do realize that fully half of FBS quarterbacks are below average? Bitching about a QB whyo has hit on 75% of his passes over the 1st two games is ludicrous. North Texas was in the Ohio game & was in a position to win in the 4th quarter. NT isn't a top Div I school, BUT we are considerably improved over last year. DT is considerably improved over last year. Have patience with the team & be grateful that we have a competent QB.
  20. Nobody take this wrong, please; but I'm damn glad we have actual professional coaches who make personnel decisions & call plays.
  21. Hi MG93-98, No the Supreme Court isn't above being ideological but it is encouraging how often the court (or rather its members) manage to rise above ideology. The most recent example is Chief Justice Roberts' decision regarding The Affordable Care Act. Was it legislation Roberts liked? No. But in his opinion, whether good or bad, it was constitutional. There should be, and there are, congressional checks on the judiciary, but that shouldn't extend to Congress taking on the court's role of deciding what is constitutional and what is not.
  22. It's a well written book, some of which I agree with some that I don't. Levin's amendments are: 1. Term limits, including for justices. 2. Repealing Amendment 17 and returning the election of senators to state legislatures 3. A congressional supermajority to override Supreme Court decisions (overruling what could be a stacked court) 4. Spending limit based on GDP 5. Taxation capped at 15% 6. Limiting the commerce clause, and strengthening private property rights 7. Power of states to override a federal statute by a three-fifths vote. 1. Term limits - seems like a good idea. However, there are positives about having folks in office long enough to understand the system. Sam Rayburn would have been missed. Also, I resent the hell out of anyone telling me I can't vote for someone. This amendment would do that. 2. Repeal 17th amendment - I agree that every state should decide how its senators will be elected. 3. Congress can override Supreme Court - No! The Supreme Court's role is to decide what is constitutional. Congress is too focused on the short-term & has a strong tendency to be ideological. How anyone can look at the current Congress & think these clowns should be able to trump the Constitution is beyond ludicrous. 4. Spending limit. I would rather see us spend money wisely than to have to put artificial limits on a budget. I know - 'wisely' ain't part of the equation. 5. Tax cap - No. This needs to be flexible. I would consider a flat tax sans all deductions, exemptions, & such. 6a. Limiting Commerce Clause - Yes. Federal role has grown too large. 6b. Strengthening private property rights - No. Too much abuse of 'common good' has taken place in the name of 'private rights'. 7. Power of state to override federal statute. Yes. Thoughtful book & interesting topic/ Thanks FFR.
  23. Earning some recognition is a reasonable early season goal. A few top-25 votes would fill that nicely. My full season goal, and it's reasonable, is to be invited to a bowl.
  24. Yes, congratulations to DT for a great game. But, let's not forgaet that when a QB (or RB for that matter) has a great game some of the credit belongs to the Big Uglies. Great game guys. God bless Texas!
