  1. '90, in the post you're referring to I mentioned that I was referring to the 20th Century. And without the Brits standing up to Hitler, virtually alone. while the US stayed neutral in the waar between democracy & fascism, America would now be a very lonely place.
  2. We certainly did. They, however, sacrificed more on battlefields in which we fought for a common cause. In WWI we lost ~ 117K killed, the Brits lost ~800K dead. In WWII we lost 407K dead, the Brits a bit less at 384K dead. The totals for the two world wars was US = 524,000, Great Britain = 1,184,000. Obviously the US sacrifice in Korea & Viet Nam was much higher than the UK's, but overall for the 20th Century the British sacrificed more for for western civilization than we did. My point, is that '90 is wrong in asserting that Great Britain owes us a debt that must be paid by blind adherence to US foreign policy. Both countries have paid a high price for the common good of humanity. Both countries still have many interests in common. When they support us in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or the Ukarine it should be because our interests coincide, not because they owe us some imagionary debt.
  3. Sometimes. Usually a country will support another country when their current interests coincide. Even the UK's policy of generally supporting American foreign policy is based on their perception that our countries share interests and goals. As for debt, I would think we owe them more for their sacrifices in the 20th Century than the other way around.
  4. In the case of the Ukraine the inability of the US to push our European allies towards more severe economic sanctions has more to do with the greater ties Europe has with Russia. Sanctions against Russia will be met with Russia cutting off the supply of natural gas to Europe. No big deal for us, but for the Europeans it could make for a cold winter. Every country should be expected to act in its own best interest. When the best interests of the US & it's allies are not coincident it is unreasonable to expect cooperation regardless of who is president.
  5. My attitude is that the US military should only be employed to protect vital US interests. That makes me much more conservative - on this issue at least - than you.
  6. Unfortunately there may be little beyond exerting political and economic pressure we can do in the Ukraine. We can't be the world's policeman & we shouldn't do anything as stupid as bluffing about military action on Russia's borders. And make no mistake - it would be a bluff. There is no way we can bring enough military might to bear in the Black Sea - sans threat of nuclear war - to threaten the Russian hegemony in that region. What we can do is support our European allies as they exert economic pressure on Russia & as they strengthen their support of the Baltic States & eastern Europe. Even here it has to be an European initiative - our economic impact on Russia is too limited. Your attitude in this matter is part of what scares me about America's radical right. You're willing to risk everything over ideology. This statement is simply untrue.
  7. You are talking about US troops in the Ukraine. That makes zero sense. Sadam Hussein & Vladimir Putin are both authoritarian despots who flaunt international mores. We find them offensive. We should do everything possible - withing the context of our own best interests - to constrain them. Driving Hussein out of Kuwait was in our best interest. Driving him from power & replacing him with a weak pro-Iranian government that may easily be replaced by a radical Islamic regime is not in our best interest. Constraining Putin in the Ukraine is in our best interest. Involving US troops in a war in the Ukraine is not.
  8. If there is an after-life imagine a band with Stevey Ray Vaughan & Johnny Winter playing together.
  9. Like we stood up to Sadam Hussein. That worked out well. Ask Napoleon about the wisdom of fighting Russia in the Ukraine. US or NATO military involvement in the Ukraine would be the silliest possible thing we could do. Agreed peanut farmers & bad actors have no business being President.
  10. '90 is right (oh, that hurts to say). I'm proud that so many UNT supporters responded. That may well make DMN think twice in the furure. However, the damage is done. Readers of the original story - that skipped UNT - got the message that UNT was not a major FBS player in the Metroplex. The DMN shouldn't just have corrected their stupidity - they should have publically apologized.
  11. '90 do you really think that US military action should be on the table in the Ukraine? Oh, and I agree that Nancy was a forceful leader. She would have had Ron say something really powerful.
  12. Obama condemns Russia after airliner downed in Ukraine http://news.msn.com/world/obama-condemns-russia-after-airliner-downed-in-ukraine "an outrage of unspeakable proportions" Now '90 will bash President Obama for harsh rhetoric.
  13. On offense games are won by the big ugly dudes. The 'skill position' guys are just skinny boys who get the girls and the glory - but they don't win games. UNT will be fine on offense. On defense......
  14. Interesting commentary from the president of the AAU: http://chronicle.com/article/Texas-Makes-an-Appalling-Mess/147561/?cid=at&utm_source=at&utm_medium=en
  15. Sad, sad thread. Steve's BBQ, The Texas Pick-up.... gone. Never to return. Gone.
  16. Underlying the soap opera are some inportant philosophical issues. Are students customers? Is education a product? Governor Perry says 'yes' to both, President Powers says 'no'.
  17. Yes, short-term the free-market works. It means choosing short-term profit over long-term good. It means drilling on the north slope so the BP & Exxon can make huge profits while the ecosystem is damaged for the fore-seeable-future. It means pulling oil out of the tar sands that will increase atmospheric C. It means paying a football coach $7m/yr that fills a stadium this year and sets a precedent that will cost all NCAA institutions for years to come. Damn, I sound like Karl Marx.
  18. Alabama is a public university so I guess the public has a right to say it's too much. Alabama has needs that are much more important than a successful football program. Hell, that university has many needs more important than football. Paying Saban 28 times as much as a nobel-prize winning physicist is stupid.
  19. I don't believe that any coach of amature sports is worth a million a year. It's one more sign that our priorities are out of whack.
  20. I agree that this sends the wrong message to our enemies. POWs shouldn't be bargaining chips. For the most part I approve of how our president has handled our Middle Eastern entanglements but this, in my opinion, was a serious mistake.
  21. Nope. I consider those to be excellent universities - among the best in North America. Most people though have only a vague notion of who Cal Tech & Johns Hopkins are, and if they know anything about Georgetown it's that Georgetown has fielded pretty good basketball teams in the past. The only justification I see for the expense of fielding athletic teams is the increased recognition that athletics brings a university. Perception is reality & we don't want UNT perceived as second class. I believe that North Texas can become a major player in athletics. If that won't happen - if our school is doomed to perpetual second-class status - then I feel we should seriously reconsider our committment to intercollegiate athletics. We're too big of a school - too good of a school - to be associated with second-rate programs.
  22. Our goal should be athletics at the highest level. Anything less reflects badly on the university. Sadly, most people perceive UT, TAMU, LSU, & OU as 1st class universities. When we play UT or TAMU some of that perception rubs off on us. If the mega-conference formally separate from the rest of the NCAA the perception among the ill-informed will be that UT is a real university & UNT is something less.
  23. Good luck with the new job. I'll be pulling for Harker Heights HS.
