Dreamer dies in Harvey rescue effort
GTWT replied to GTWT's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
You lost me, Lifer. How exactly is "And yet there are Nazis marching on our campuses & our president says that some of them are good people" a generalization (gross or otherwise)? -

And yet there are Nazis marching on our campuses & our president says that some of them are good people. -
Like most gross generalizations it is unfair and inaccurate. The verbiage reflects an all too common bias. Over the last 30 years I've worked with dozens of Mexican scientists and agency officials. Some are indeed arrogant and some seemed lazy. But most were hard-working and anxious to perform their duties. As a whole they are no different than the US scientists and officials I've worked with.

Yes it is a damn shame that kids are caught in the middle of it. Regardless of who brought them to the US they are now Americans. They speak English. They are educated in US schools. They share American values. They are American. Sending them back to Mexico, or Honduras, or Jamaica is grossly inhumane.

No it doesn't erase history, it rewrites history. Instead of a war against Federal intrusion,it becomes a war to sustain slavery. Instead of fighting for one's home, it becomes a war to sustain slavery. Instead of a war to resist northern tyranny, it becomes a war to sustain slavery. Tearing down the statues to southern heroes allows us to pretend the motives on both sides were simple. If you believe the South was fighting just to maintain slavery you are sadly misinformed. If you believe the North was fighting just to destroy slavery you are sadly misinformed.

Fire & Fury
GTWT replied to AustinFromUNT's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Obama was wrong to draw the line. He was right to back down when circumstances changed, making it a mistake to engage the Syrians directly. I'm glad we had president able to sacrifice his ego rather than American interest & lives. -
I certainly sympathize with the angst African American's feel when they see symbols & monuments they associate with people that treated them so shamefully. I don't know if my ancestors had slaves - I hope not. But if they did commit what for me - from my comfortable modern perspective - was a sin against humanity, that wasn't the only thing that defined them. They also loved their children, subsisted in a harsh wilderness, & fought in a terrible conflict. For all their faults they had qualities I admire. They had pride in their heritage & they loved their country (Texas or Virginia - not the federal government). They fought & they died & they had dignity in defeat. I'm sorry the statues of Robert E. Lee offend you. I'm sorry the song Dixie seems derogatory to you. I understand, but I hope you understand that those things mean something different to me.

Sometimes, Mailbox, the good guys lose. If you look closely you may find honor in defeat. If you foster an open mind you may see the motives for this conflict were more complex, on both sides, than you seem to think. It's okay to hate slavery. It's not okay to say that slavery was the only thing this war was about. I hate racism & slavery. But I know enough about US history to know that there were opponents of slavery on both sides, and owners of slaves on both sides. I also know that nearly every white person in 1860, on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line, were racist. The causes of the War Between the States were complex. Good people fought on both sides. I am truly sorry if that last line sounds like it's from Trump.

Athletics is UNT's window to the world. I don't want to turn on ESPN and see "UNT 24 Liberty 21". I'd much rather see "UNT 38 Army 32". I won't be. In fact I'm rethinking my relationship to my alma mater. I know this seems to many of you like I'm vastly over-reacting. However, to me this is a big deal. To me the people behind Liberty are to mainstream Christianity what the Taliban are to mainstream Islam. I'm going to stay off this site for awhile. Life's too short to spend it banging one's head against a wall. Have fun in the coming season.

So, you're saying we should tolerate pseudoscience?

Well, as long as we all object to the series I don't care why.

You miss the point. It's simple - UNT should not be associated with any institution that teaches pseudoscience.

Teaching creationism is teaching pseudoscience. You may believe that all life was specially created by Yahweh 6,000 years ago but your beliefs are not based on science. If you, or the professors at Liberty, teach creationism you're teaching religion and calling it science. That's pseudoscience.

creation 'science'. If they teach Genesis in a theology course that's fine. However, Liberty requires all science faculty to sign a statement that they accept a literal interpretation of the Bible - and that includes a young earth (~6 K years) & special creation of all life. That's what the students in their biology classes are taught. As others have pointed out above, you can be a Christian, be a theist, and still accept the evidence that supports the scientific theory of evolution. Many biologists do, including biologists at BYU, Baylor, ND, & other respectable universities associated with the Christian religion. Those scientists find ways to reconcile their religious beliefs with their understanding that Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago & that all life shares a common ancestor. Liberty doesn't accept this reconciliation. Liberty requires their biblical interpretations be taught as scientific fact. That's pseudoscience,
