WHAT THE...?? I agree on a couple of those points, but I think Denton has a lot more going for it than Collie Station.

1. He has a tough school and location to recruit to. 2. He faces two of the most formidable foes to recruit against in Texas in MB and Stoops at OU. 3. Leach is kicking his ass on a regular basis, and moving up the recruiting ladder. 4. His strength and conditioning program was Big 12 subpar up until about 2 years ago. 5. Reliance on JUCO's at aTm's level is alarming. Makes me wonder how good Flim Flam really is in mom and dad's living room.

Can't print it all, but here are some excerpts: ************************************ After winning four consecutive Sun Belt Conference titles from 2001 – 2004, the North Texas Mean Green suffered through a 2-9 campaign in 2005, finishing in last place in the conference standings with a 2-5 record. But with the margin of all five conference losses totaling just 21 points, 2006 brings new hope to the Mean Green with the return of a few talented players and the expectations of a resurgence to the top of the Sun Belt Conference. After losing just nine lettermen from the 2005 squad, North Texas returns 50 letterwinners to the team this Fall including a balanced mix of 22 on offense and 26 on defense. (Jamario) Thomas will have the luxury of running behind a offensive line that returns four of five starters from 2005 plus tight end Robert Harmon. However, the team's success in 2006 may ultimately be determined by how much their quarterback play improves from last season. In a situation that should sound all too familiar to Longhorn fans, the 2005 Mean Green team entered the season lacking a signal caller that had ever taken a snap in a college game. While (DRC's Brett) Vito believes the Mean Green linebackers will be the defense's strength in 2006, he has concerns about play along the defensive line saying, "UNT was terrible against the run last season, giving up 221 yards a game. The Mean Green's line will have to be better for UNT to have a chance at a winning season. UNT doesn't have many experienced defensive lineman. Losing a key guy or two would be tough for the Mean Green to overcome." Things are much less settled in the defensive backfield where UNT will be forced to replace both starting cornerbacks from last season, Ja'Mel Branch and T.J. Covington. Senior Tyrone Carter and sophomore Dominique Green are the leading candidates at corner, but both players are facing competition from a solid group of redshirt freshmen. Perhaps the biggest loss on for the Mean Green comes on the special teams unit where Nick Bazaldua, North Texas' all-time leading scorer, departed after a four-year stint. While Vito picked Thomas as his team MVP, he understands what a difficult matchup the Longhorns pose in the season opener, "Opening at Texas will be tough for UNT. Jamario will need a big game if UNT is to stay in it." Fans should expect for the Longhorns to make a point to dominate the line of scrimmage in this game, while breaking in Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead under center.

Those are the kind you have to watch out for.

"Peruna has also KILLED another mascot, the Fordham Ram. During a game between the two schools, Peruna was led too close to the ram and kicked it, killing it immediately. He’s also belted Bevo and tried to mount the Texas Tech horse." LOVE IT! Great article.

Hehehe! Guess the badger shouldn't have picked up a State flag and tried to run it, huh?

THAT would be AWESOME!

Most Horns view aTm as similar to your crazy redneck nephew or brother-in-law. For all the antagonism and rivalry, aTm is still 'family'--sort of. You want to whip them, but the rivalry is a bit more fun. The aTm alums I know are some of the best people I've ever met, and some of the truest friends you could ever want. I enjoy talking football with them during the season. OU is different. IMO, No Texan who supports athletics in ANY Texas-based school should pull for OU in ANYTHING. EVER. Their athletic success is bad for Texas schools--including UNT. Having said that, I also enjoy sparring with my Sooner friends--(my 85 year old next door neighbor is a die-hard.) No lie, she's in a wheelchair, and called me several times on the phone to tell me to take down my UT flag flying on the porch on game days. "If I could get over there, I'd take that thing down and burn it." she told me. In fact, for Christmas, she got my wife some nice wind chime or something, and I opened my gift from her, and she had bought me an OU Christmas stocking! I personally think that UNT should keep building the rivalry with SMU, and also schools like Texas State, Arkie State, and Tech. The more rivalry games with teams in Texas, the better for the program. There is a thread right now at a UT board about that 1988 game, and the more mileage that can be pulled from that game as motivation, the better. Those kind of things are what build rivalries. The next thing UNT needs to do is try kidnapping BEVO, or painting Scrappy's head at Jones SBC. Hell, Rice is notorious for that kind of thing, and they never win anything. I'd like nothing better than to see the score of the 1997 game at Jones painted in GREEN on the parking lot, or something. Why the hell not??

Makes for a good story, but unfortunately for Lassieland...: (full text here.) "The University of Texas originated in 1839, when the Congress of the Republic of Texas, in an act locating the seat of government, ordered a site set aside for a university. A subsequent act the same year allocated fifty leagues (231,400 acres) of land to the establishment and the endowment of two colleges or universities. Whether because of frontier conditions, scarcity of money, a feeling that higher education was the concern of the rich who ought to pay for it, or disagreement as to where the university should be located, nothing more was done by the Congress or by the Texas legislature until 1858. That year the legislature made financial provision for a university by appropriating for the institution the fifty leagues granted in 1839, $100,000 in United States bonds remaining from the $10 million paid to Texas in the Compromise of 1850, and one section of land out of every ten reserved to the state in grants made in aid to railroads and a navigation company. The same act placed the university under the control of ten administrators: the governor, the chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court, and eight others nominated by the governor. Secession and the Civil War prevented the act of 1858 from being carried out, however. Indeed, a great portion of the university fund derived from the sale of the fifty leagues granted in 1839 was diverted to the general needs of the state and was not fully repaid until 1883. The Constitution of 1866 directed the legislature to put the university in operation at an early date. In 1871 the legislature established the Texas A&M College, but the university was still postponed. The Constitution of 1876 specified that the legislature, as soon as practicable, was to establish, organize, and provide for the maintenance and support of a "university of the first class" to be located by vote of the people and styled the University of Texas, for promotion of the study of literature and the arts and sciences."

Probably the TEXAS State game. -
Gruu, I'd like a copy of that game, and am willing to pay. PM me if you're agreeable.

I think it might have been very similar, but the logo was the new green, and the material was not that dark. Kind of a khaki. At any rate, it's the one I'm getting next.

Saw a new (to me anyway) hat at Hat World (Ridgmar) yesterday. Similar to the Afrayed and Apprentice styles at their website, but had a faded, sort of distressed look. Pretty cool. Anyone else seen it?

Classic.

That's a really nice facility. Sounds like a great time.

Very cool. Go Patrick!

UNT will be playing a home and home w/Rice. Thought some might enjoy the info on them. God forbid. Would you like a snowcone or something? "UNT also finalized a deal with Rice to play a home-and-home series in 2008 and 2010. UNT has stated its intension to develop more regional rivalries and reduce the number of high-dollar contract games the Mean Green play on the road. “It is increasingly important for us to develop regional rivalries with teams such as Rice,” UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal said. “Our fans appreciate the ability to travel to games within a reasonable proximity and have a better association with teams from the state of Texas like Rice and SMU.” "
