  2. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2005/Ho...hos_Hot_Not.htm North Texas running game Despite having the nation’s last two NCAA rushing champions, North Texas is currently 94th in the nation in rushing a mere 103 yards per game. Out of 119 teams, the UNT offense is 119th. Patrick Cobbs has rushed for 237 yards and a touchdown in three games, while Jamario Thomas has 133 yards and no touchdowns. Thomas ran for more than 133 yards six times last year. As bad as things have been for the running game, it’s not as bad as the …Kent State running game
  3. Isn't the Harris Poll the new one that will be used to help determine BCS standings? If so, how beleivable will it be ? Look what winless team (not UNT) got 5 votes! Incredible http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2005/Rankings/Harris.htm

  8. How can people be disappointed and negative ? Just because we got blown-out at home by a so-so Tulsa team, can't put any points up against anyone, rank somewhere between Slippery Rock Teachers and Miss Hardins Girls School in defense, and squandered the best pre-season publicity and hype this teams ever had there's no reason to be disappointed and negative ? If you can't understand , you really need HELP.

  11. A little humor from our local paper's on-line edition as the print-paper has been suspended until Sunday due to the hurricane evacuation. Most businesses boarded & shut down, post office deliveries suspended (until Saturday), newspaper closed ..... but ....... Rita Doesn't stop Bingo By kathryn garcia/Caller-Times September 23, 2005 In a city with many of its residents evacuated and most businesses boarded up, bingo must go on. "I just won $750," said 90-year-old Dafena Leyba, beaming as she continued dotting the G59s on her sheets of bingo cards carefully arranged before her. El Mercado Bingo Hall reopened Friday morning after more than 30 regulars phoned owner Silverio Valencia begging him to let the bingo games continue. "With bingo, it’s a part of their lives," said Valencia adding that despite Hurricane Rita he had the same amount of customers. Leyba said she was grateful to have returned to her lucky chair having spent Thursday playing solitaire and watching telenovelas cooped up in her home alone. "When I’m playing bingo, I don’t worry, I don’t think," Leyba said. Contact Kathryn Garcia at 886-3792 or garciak@caller.com.
  12. In The SPOTLIGHT Rian Johnson Staff Writer September 23, 2005 A national rushing leader will be featured this weekend. Unfortunately for the Mean Green, he is in the opposing backfield. Wildcats junior running back Thomas Clayton enters the game atop the NCAA with 164.5 rushing yards per game. Clayton leads a category that NT has dominated over the past few years. In addition to Clayton, the Kansas State offense relies on the ability of its quarterback to recognize defensive schemes at the line. “They are big and physical up front,” NT Head Coach Darrell Dickey said. “Coach Snyder does a great job in his game planning of always having his quarterback get them in the right play. They do a lot of play checking at the line, and they know how to attack you defensively.” Junior quarterback Allen Webb enters the game with relatively few passing yards. Webb has thrown for four touchdowns and two interceptions, with a completion percentage of 58. On Sept. 10 against Marshall, Webb had 18 rushing attempts for 58 yards, alongside his 10 of 19 passing for 126 yards and two touchdowns. The Mean Green offense is looking at a very tough defense as well. The Wildcats have limited opponents to 78 yards rushing, and the defense is rated 25th in the nation so far this season. The Mean Green wide receivers will also have a hard time against the Kansas State defense. The Wildcats are ranked 20th in the nation in pass efficiency defense. “Defensively … they play a lot of man, and they play it very well,” Dickey said. It will be a difficult challenge for the Mean Green to rebound from last week’s loss with a win over a BCS school, but Coach Dickey said he is anxious to see how his players handle a loss like last week. “We’ve got our hands full based on our opponent this week, but my biggest concern right now is our football team and how we react to a disappointing loss just like how we reacted to a big win,” Dickey said. Coaching Briefs: NT Head Coach Darrell Dickey played quarterback at Kansas State and took the program to its first ever bowl game. Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder was an assistant coach at NT from 1967-78 under Hayden Fry. Also, Snyder’s first win as a head coach was against NT.
  13. What did Ethan Szatmary call the board that got some people so upset?
  14. Deep just glad to hear from ya.
  15. Don't know numbers on others, but Cedric Hardeman had 38 career sacks.
  16. Holman making impact on field for Mean Green UNT linebacker starting to fulfill expectations 09:18 AM CDT on Friday, September 23, 2005 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer When asked about making the biggest play thus far this season for North Texas late on a Saturday night two weeks ago, Maurice Holman said it was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. UNT defensive coordinator Kenny Evans is pretty sure there was a little more to it than just luck, even if it appeared as if Middle Tennessee quarterback Clint Marks went temporarily color blind in the Mean Green’s 14-7 win over the Blue Raiders. MTSU had a seven-point lead in the second half and appeared to be on its way to putting UNT away when Marks threw the ball right to Holman, who took it 99 yards to the opposite end of the field for the game-tying touchdown. The interception was just the latest in a series of big plays and solid performances by Holman, who has gone from afterthought to backup to starter in just over a year. “Maurice is such a hard worker and student of the game,” Evans said. “He utilized his time last year when he was not starting in practice. When he got his opportunity he was ready for it. That is the difference between him and some people. Sometimes people want a chance and then don’t take advantage when they get one. Maurice did.” The former Mt. Vernon standout will look to add to his list of big plays in UNT’s last three games when the Mean Green face perhaps their toughest task to date on Saturday, a 1:10 p.m. game at Kansas State. Holman will enter that game with added confidence after leading the Mean Green with 10 tackles in last season’s New Orleans Bowl and essentially saving UNT in its game against MTSU. Holman attributes his recent surge to his desire to make an impact this season. “This offseason I decided that I wanted to play,” Holman said. “I am roommates with Patrick [Cobbs] and Chris [Miller]. They are seniors and I want them to go out with a bang.” UNT’s coaches knew Holman had a chance to be an impact player when they signed him in the winter of 2003. It just took a little longer than expected for Holman to capitalize on his potential because of a knee injury he suffered before the beginning of his redshirt freshman season. Holman was in the middle of a battle with fellow freshman Brandon Monroe for playing time and lost out when he had to miss several practices. A second chance came when Monroe was injured in the New Orleans Bowl, forcing Holman into the game. “I got my chance to play in the New Orleans Bowl and didn’t want to let it go,” Holman said. “It was great to play under the lights on national TV with people at home watching. It was a great feeling.” The way Holman played during that game was one of the first indications he had turned the corner. UNT coach Darrell Dickey said it appeared as if Holman broke through late last year when started reacting instead of thinking about what he needed to do on the field. “Last year I second-guessed myself,” Holman said. “This year I know what to do and can follow my instincts.” Those instincts are what helped Holman end up in the right spot to post his interception against MTSU. “It was a great, great time against Middle Tennessee,” Holman said. “It was a good come-from-behind win for us in conference play.” While Holman has progressed, Evans says he is just like the rest of the Mean Green’s young defensive players who still have a long way to go to reach their potential. Holman finished with three tackles last week and only played well in the first half against Tulsa before the Mean Green’s defense collapsed along the with the rest of the team in a 54-2 loss. “Maurice is a brand new starter and every game is different,” Evans said. “He still needs to learn how to play with focus and intensity every game for four quarters.” Taking that next step could help make Holman the complete player UNT’s coaches believe he can be. “Maurice has the size, speed and strength,” Evans said. “Plus he is a very intelligent football player.” Chapman to play against K-State Defensive end Jeremiah Chapman will play against Kansas State on Saturday, UNT coach Darrell Dickey said Thursday. Chapman’s status was in question because of an ankle injury until doctors cleared him on Wednesday. The sophomore ranks third on the team with 13 tackles and has also recovered a fumble. 17. You figured that out by yourself ? Outstanding!
  18. Where have you been? The Southland Conference has been on FoxSW for years. And why would anyone consider televising a replay during prime time. HELP
  19. Interesting post from the Sun Belt board. This is one of those FYI type of stories - also shows that despite four straight Sun Belt titles, it is not North Texas who rewards their coaches with the highest compensation packages. In the course of researching how the staff of the North Texas makes in comparison to the rest of the Sun Belt, the staff of the Denton Record Chronicle broke down all the major staff of each of the member schools of the entire Sun Belt Conference. If you've ever wanted to know how much the LB coach for Troy or the O-Line coach for Louisiana-Lafayette makes in a year, well...here is your answer. http://www.fanblogs.com/005679.php
  20. Things/circumstances change quickly. Corpus Christi has gone from 'Mandatory Evacuation' to preparing shelters for Houston area folks that are evacuating because of Rita. Kudos to our local officials for being able to quickly change priorities.
  21. Football players, coaches shake off tough loss Rian Johnson Staff Writer September 22, 2005 Receiver Johnny Quinn said the loss will help the team prepare for upcoming games. It is an annual event. The Mean Green gets thumped in a non-conference game, then goes on to succeed in its conference. Last year, NT opened its season with a 65-0 loss against Texas. The year before that, the Mean Green suffered a 37-3 defeat at the hands of Oklahoma. Three years ago, NT had two non-conference losses by 26 points. Yet all three years, the Mean Green finished the season atop the Sun Belt conference. How does NT manage to overcome the loss to Tulsa? “First of all, they realize the things we did throughout the course of the game that led to a lopsided score,” Head Coach Darrell Dickey said. “Second of all, they block out all of the things they are hearing around them.” Mean Green running back Jamario Thomas at Saturday’s 54-2 loss against Tulsa. It didn’t take the Mean Green long to begin tackling the issue. The morning after its 54-2 loss to Tulsa, a number of NT players arrived at the athletics center at their own will. “They were looking at film, wanting to know how they can get better,” Dickey said. Many of the players took Saturday night personal. The loss came in front of one of the largest crowds to ever attend a game at Fouts Field. “A score of 54-2 is tough, but the fact that it was our first home game,” NT junior wide receiver Johnny Quinn said. “We had a great turnout … it’s disappointing we played like that in front of our fans.” Quinn said the loss brought NT down a notch after winning its season opener against Middle Tennessee. “It’s a reality check,” Quinn said. “That was the first time for me to be 1-0. They beat us in all three phases; offense, defense and special teams.” Dickey said one reason for such a large defeat could stem from the team’s performance against Middle Tennessee in week one. That matchup had been designated the key game to determine the Sun Belt champion this year. “I don’t think we handled the big win real well,” Dickey said. “We came back and maybe thought we were a little better than we were.” Dickey said the win did not create a situation where the Mean Green thought it was superior to Tulsa. Rather, the players may have been a little more relaxed than they needed to be. “I don’t think we were as focused and intense as we need to be on game day,” Dickey said. “How you prepare each week, how you remain focused and how intense you play is as critical as anything else there is in trying to win a game.” Quinn said there is no doubt Saturday’s loss will help the team prepare for upcoming games. “As far as preparation, with a score like that, it just keeps us focused throughout practice to know we have a lot of work to do, to be where we want to be.” Dickey said the Mean Green has a long way to go before it is at a level it needs to be at, but the team is capable of reaching that level. “There is a lot of room for improvement,” Dickey said. “But there is a lot of potential for us to get a lot better. As long as our guys stay hungry, focused and want to keep working at it, then we will have a chance to develop this team as the season goes on.”
  22. Why would a coach ever cosider posting on a fan board?
  23. We may be dodging the bullet in Corpus Christi with Rita's movement. Evacuation order was mandatory, now voluntary. Best of luck to Deep Green & Island Eagle who's areas are really in the bulls-eye.
  24. We've got our own problems
  25. Geeze, you'd be in a real panick if you lived 400 miles south on the coast
