http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2006/Co.../NewCoaches.htm Middle Tennessee State Head Coach: Rick Stockstill Former Coach: Andy McCollum Bio: It took his first head coaching opportunity to pry Stockstill, 45, away from the Atlantic Coast, where he’s spent the last quarter-century as a player and a coach. The former Florida State quarterback played for Bobby Bowden and learned on the sidelines from a diverse cross-section of coaches, including Steve Spurrier, Lou Holtz, Danny Ford, Tommy Bowden and Ken Hatfield. Stockstill spent the last two seasons working for Holtz and Spurrier at South Carolina, but built the majority of his experience at Clemson from 1989-2002, coaching receivers for nine years and quarterbacks for five. In 2003, he was the offensive coordinator for East Carolina. The Skinny: For a few years, the Blue Raiders appeared capable of breaking North Texas’ hold on to Sun Belt supremacy, but it never happened. Enter Stockstill, an offensive-minded coach, who’s watched film with his share of college luminaries and is recognized as a top-notch recruiter. He’ll need to be to get a better caliber of athlete to Murfreesboro. Should Raider fans be concerned that Stockstill has been a coordinator for just one of his 24 years as an assistant? Putting Out the Welcome Mat: WR Bobby Williams. Stockstill has had tremendous success tutoring wide receivers over the years, and Williams is his best looking pupil at Middle Tennessee. He’s 6-3, and as a true freshman, earned 10 starts and pulled down 22 receptions.

If I remember correctly, Dr. Pohl fired Trilli just after he fired Helwig and before RV was hired.

Sorry, just couldn't resist -
2. The Heisman finalists, before spring ball starts, are ... Adrian Peterson, RB Oklahoma - It's his to lose. This will be his last chance before becoming the number one pick in the 2007 draft. Brady Quinn, QB Notre Dame - The clear-cut number two going into the year, but the Irish must be in the national title hunt all season. Troy Smith, QB Ohio State - The numbers won't be there, but a win over Texas will launch the campaign. John David Booty, QB USC - You'd throw for 25 touchdowns if you got to work with Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett. Chris Leak, QB Florida - If Florida is in the mix for the national championship, Leak will get the credit. Five who'll be mentioned in the race at some point this year Brian Brohm, QB Louisville Chad Henne, QB Michigan Steve Slaton, RB West Virginia Drew Stanton, QB Michigan State Drew Tate, QB Iowa Five who'll put up ridiculous numbers but won't get a sniff John Beck, QB BYU Colt Brennan, QB Hawaii Brian Johnson, QB Utah Jamario Thomas, RB North Texas Garrett Wolfe, RB Northern Illinois http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2006/Sp...estions_3_1.htm

Freshman eager to show versatility Edwards’ ability blends well with Mean Green By Andrew Bavarena Intern February 17, 2006 Coming from a former No.2 nationally ranked high school basketball program and being named first team All-State in Alabama, there was no question NT freshman Harold Edwards could play basketball at a high level. Edwards, who mulled over offers from prestigious programs such as Georgetown and Georgia Tech, said he chose NT because he felt he could make more of a contribution early on. Although he came from one of the top high school programs in the nation, LeFlore High School in Mobile, Ala., he still knows he has a lot to prove and more importantly is confident enough to know he will prove himself. “I considered Georgia Tech but in the end decided to go with North Texas because I wanted to come in and make an immediate contribution,” said Edwards, a versatile athlete who can play either small or power forward. While he hasn’t gotten as much playing time as one might expect from such a highly regarded recruit, Edwards is staying patient, knowing his time will come. “I just want to make sure I keep improving every year and never regress.” Edwards said. “If I do that, I know I will reach my potential.” Edwards said the way the team interacts off the court translates into good chemistry on the court. “It’s easy to play with people that you’re close with,” Edwards said. “You know they trust you, that they’re not doing what’s best for them but what’s best for the team. You don’t have any guys out there who are looking to get individual accomplishments or accolades, but rather team accolades.” Kobie Baker, a former assistant to NT head coach Johnny Jones, recruited Edwards. While Edwards doesn’t feel any sense of reluctance to prove himself again, he does know he has to make the most of his playing time with Jones to crack the starting lineup. “At the beginning of the year I wasn’t getting in too much, you know,” Edwards said. “I was studying hard and trying to stay out of trouble. I was also being a freshman, being bullheaded trying to do things my way. Now I’ve learned that if I just take my time and be patient, things will come around.” Edwards’ most memorable experience with the team wasn’t a no-look pass thrown to him by guard Isaac Hines on a fast break. Nor was it an alley-oop he caught making a back-door cut. Edwards’ most memorable moment came on a day when he might have otherwise been sitting in his dorm room eating packaged sliced turkey on wheat. On Thanksgiving, the coach invited all out-of-state players over to his house for Thanksgiving dinner. “Coach Jones opened up his house to us,” Edwards said. “You can tell he really cares about his players and it showed that day. It was as if we were sitting with our own family. I can’t say how much thankful I am and respect him for that.” That Jones opened his home to them is another testament to the cohesiveness of this team. While Edwards played mostly center in high school, he has already learned to play both forward positions. This trait has given him a versatility that many players would envy. Both Edwards and Jones said his flexibility on the court is his best contribution to the team. At 6 feet 6 inches tall, Edwards usually has a slight height advantage over a lot of the small forwards he plays against, which gives him more cushion on whoever he is guarding. On the other hand, he is quicker than most power forwards and can outmaneuver them because of his comparably smaller size. “Harold Edwards has the ability to play the three and the four spot,” Jones said. “I think that that gives him an advantage over some other people that we have on the team and that we’re presently recruiting. When you have the flexibility to play both inside and outside, that shows the talent level [of Edwards] and we’re looking forward to exploring that later on in his career.”

College Football News comments on CUSA team schedules. UNT vs SMU tossup vs Tulsa sure loss. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/Confere...am_Schedule.htm

Spring ball has already begun with North Texas kicking off its off-season sessions on February 13th and with Texas, Auburn and UCLA starting soon. Here are twenty questions heading into this important time to keep you going during this brutally painful time before March Madness. (Questions 13-7 coming Thursday, 6-1 on Friday.) 14. Which conference will be the best in 2006? 11. Sun Belt - It'll once again be one of college football's most interesting races all eight teams having a shot. 2005 newcomers FIU and Florida Atlantic should be better, while North Texas will find its groove again after struggling with its offense last year. The best team should be ... UL Lafayette 10. MAC - The star power isn't there with the loss of Bowling Green QB Omar Jacobs and Toledo QB Bruce Gradkowski, but NIU's Garrett Wolfe will be among the nation's rushing leaders. The division races should be fun with Ball State and Western Michigan sure to challenge NIU and Toledo in the West and Ohio sure to be better in the East. The best team should be ... Northern Illinois 9. WAC - It's a top-heavy league with Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada good enough to hang around with anyone in America, but the bottom is really bad. Even so, New Mexico State and Utah State can't be worse while San Jose State has the potential to be much better. The best team should be ... Nevada 8. Conference USA - This is potentially the most even league in the country. Remember that UCF was coming off a winless season and still came this close to winning the title. If that can happen, then SMU and Tulane should have a ray of hope. Fine, so Rice won't pull a UCF, but the other 11 teams should wage a fierce war with a few upsets over BCS teams sure to happen. The best team should be ... UCF 7. Mountain West - All talk of being better than the Big East should be put to rest after this year, but this is still a solid league with TCU, Utah and BYU as good as any mid-level BCS conference team and New Mexico, San Diego State, Colorado State and Wyoming sure to be competitive. Air Force and UNLV should be better. The best team should be ... TCU 6. Big East - 5. Big 12 - 4. Big Ten - 3. ACC - 2. Pac 10 - 1. SEC - FULL ARTICLE http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2006/Sp...tions_20_14.htm
