Black uniforms cause backlash Abel Prado Issue date: 11/22/06 Section: NEWS As head coach Darrell Dickey's final home game at Fouts Field faded to black in a 17-16 loss to Florida Atlantic this Saturday, so did the color of the Mean Green uniforms. Several students were upset when they saw the traditional green-colored jerseys replaced with "plain Jane" uniforms that do not display the player's names, the color green nor any reference, logo or insignia related to NT. In correspondence to the Daily, alumnus Shane Bevel accused the black jerseys of violating NCAA logo regulations and uniform guidelines. After extensive research of the NCAA rulebook, it was clear that such charges are ill conceived, said NCAA spokeswoman Renee Scales. "The rules strictly stipulate what can be on a uniform, but it doesn't restrict any lack of logo, school branding or manufacture logo," Scales said. "The teams are perfectly free to go play a game in plain jerseys so long as they have contrasting colors, and they do not violate any illegal equipment regulations." Even if the jerseys had violated any logo restriction rules, the ramifications would be non-existent as the NCAA rules state that all punishment for illegal equipment on uniform matters are punished by charged timeouts, five yard penalties and delay of game assessments. All punishments are assessed in-game and hold no justification for suspensions, fines or further repercussions, according to the NCAA rule book and Renee Scales. Mystery still shrouds the arrival of the black jerseys, as their ominous arrival preceding the firing of Dickey. Athletic Director Rick Villarreal was out of town when the jerseys arrived and Dickey did not return several calls seeking comment, though he did say in a post-game conference that the jerseys were the result of the players liking the color and nothing more. Student Government Association President Alan Ross, among other student body leaders, spoke out against the jerseys Tuesday. "I think that it was a lack of school spirit," said Ross, who, along with the Speaker of the Senate Chris Brown, passed a resolution encouraging the boosters to continue their support for the athletic program. Villarreal said he did not see the jerseys but shed light on allegations of NCAA restrictions. "It should be said that the jerseys did not violate any NCAA regulations or restrictions," Villarreal said. "We should all acknowledge that coach Dickey was a great coach and that is how his reputation should be remembered." The Mean Green will close out the season this weekend when it travels to Louisiana to face Louisiana-Monroe.

FAU trustees endorse open-air football stadium » » Venue could be expanded for more seats, dome » » By Sarah Talalay | South Florida Sun-Sentinel » Posted November 8, 2006 » » Florida Atlantic University's Board of Trustees took a conservative » approach Tuesday to building an on-campus football stadium, endorsing an » open-air venue that could one day have a roof. » » Despite the urging of football coach Howard Schnellenberger and Athletic » Director Craig Angelos, who preferred a more expensive and elaborate » proposal for a 40,000-seat domed stadium, the board directed university » staff to pursue the "phased project" option at a meeting on FAU's Fort » Lauderdale campus. » » The smaller version of the stadium, projected to cost $98.7 million, would » be constructed so more seats and a dome could be added later. » » The team hopes a football stadium can open for the Owls' 2010 season. » » The university is working with KUD International, a team of private » companies that designs, builds and manages sports venues, to develop a » private-public partnership that includes the stadium, dormitories and » retail stores on the Boca Raton campus. » » The idea is the housing and businesses could generate most of the dollars » needed to finance construction of the football stadium and possibly a » basketball arena. The university and KUD plan to spend the next six months » hashing out the details and full scope of the project, including the » stadium's seating capacity. I guess they know what they're doing but having been there recently for a game it doesn't make since to me. I think they announded while we were there that future games would be played in Miami at the Orange Bowl. Where they play now is antiquated but their fan base doesn't come anywhere near filling it. They have two campuses and are a large University but with the competition they have from major Universities it's hard to see them filling any stadium. I don't see the "if you build it they'll come" working in Ft. Lauderdale/Boca Raton.

Coach's son gets big payoff to leave Florida State By BRENT KALLESTAD, Associated Press Writer November 15, 2006 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden received a $537,000 buyout from the school's boosters to resign. The settlement was revealed Wednesday when the school released a copy of the agreement Bowden's attorneys reached with the university and its boosters. The resignation takes effect Nov. 26, a day after the season finale against Florida. Bowden -- youngest son of head coach Bobby Bowden -- retains his present $141,000 salary until his contract expires next August. He then will receive annual payments of $107,500 until August 2012. The agreement, dated Nov. 14, was signed by Jeff Bowden, whose legal first name is George, and Andy Miller, president of Seminole Boosters, Inc. Jeff Bowden had been under fire for the past several years as Florida State's offense declined and his dad defended his performance. But with Bobby Bowden's contract expiring in January of 2008, it was uncertain how the university was willing to negotiate an extension while Jeff Bowden remained on staff. "It's just amazing," Bobby Bowden said Wednesday. "When things go wrong the first thing they blame is the offensive coordinator. That's kind of the game we Americans play."

UNT shocked by Dickey firing By ADAM SPARKS and MONTE HALE JR. The Daily News Journal North Texas assistant coaches and players were taken aback last week when it was announced head coach Darrell Dickey would not return next season. "It was a total shock," said UNT assistant coach Kenny Evans. "In a six-year period we've only lost eight conference games. Our players were shocked. We know how close we are and how good we can be. "Less than two years ago we won a championship and played in a bowl game. But at the same time, it's part of the business. It's a great profession, but some times loyalty is not two ways." Evans credited Dickey for the way he handled the team last week. "He did a very good job," Evans said. "He said to continue to play with class and go out and have fun the next three weeks. It doesn't surprise me. Coach Dickey knows how to handle adversity." Under Dickey, North Texas won the first four Sun Belt championships from 2001-04 and reeled off a 26-game conference winning streak that ended last season. Yahoo recap. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Kendrick Davis scored 20 points as North Texas beat Charlotte 90-72 on Sunday to open its season 2-0 for the first time in 12 years. Four other players scored in double figures for the Mean Green, who overcame foul problems and turnovers to hold off a second-half rally by the 49ers (1-1). Rich Young scored 16 points for North Texas before fouling out with less than nine minutes to play. Michael Sturns added 14 points, Calvin Watson 13 and Ben Bell 11. The last time the Mean Green started off with a winning record was during the 1994-1995 season under then-coach Jimmy Gales, when North Texas opened with three straight wins. De'Angelo Alexander scored 25 points for Charlotte, which was trying for its first 2-0 start since the 2000-2001 season. But the 49ers couldn't fully overcome a slow start, in which they shot 28.6 percent from the field in the first half and trailed by as many as 18 points. Davis had put the Mean Green up 44-26 on a 3-pointer with 2:42 left in the first half, but Charlotte scored nine unanswered points to pull within nine at 44-35 at the break. The 49ers managed to cut North Texas' lead to four points three times in the second half, the last at 64-60 on Leemire Goldwire's jumper with 8:06 remaining. But the Mean Green went on a 16-8 run over the next five minutes, with Sturns' 3-point play with 2:59 left pushing North Texas' lead back into double digits at 80-68. The Mean Green then sealed the win by hitting 10-of-12 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes. (UNT hit 23 of 29 ) Goldwire, named the Atlantic 10 player of the week earlier Sunday, added 13 points for the 49ers, and E.J. Drayton had his second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Goldwire earned the A-10 award for the second time in his career after scoring 26 points and hitting 12-of-12 from the free-throw line in the 49ers' season-opening 88-82 win over Hofstra less than 24 hours earlier.

Where would you have them present the proposal other than in Austin ?
-
It's actually the old CITY HALL. PD & city jail were located there along with other city offices.
-
The UNT System will present the proposal for a new College of Law in Austin in 2007 and hopes to enroll the first class as early as 2009. Info from invitation(s) to a November 29th fund raiser reception & dinner. Looks like it's full speed ahead on this project.

Prior to that one of the area newspapers ran a story comparing Tech's possible expenses vs. revenue in the WAC vs. Sun Belt. In the article the conclusion drawn was that WAC membership was more expensive by far than Belt membership but that WAC revenue was just enough to make WAC membership the better deal by a few dollars. It was the typical half-arse reporting. First the bulk of WAC revenue at the time was from some really good NCAA Tournament dollars, not football generated dollars and who knows how long those units will be there. Second, the sample year for what it would cost to be in the Sun Belt was a year where La.Tech had traveled to Hawaii, Kansas State, Penn State, Middle Tenn, Auburn, Miami and Monroe. The sample year for what it costs to be in the WAC was a year where they traveled in football to: Clemson, Penn State, Texas A&M, Rice, SMU, San Jose, and Boise. Remember that was a cheap year for Tech travel because they didn't go to Hawaii (unlike the "Sun Belt" sample) and two of their four conference road trips were to Dallas (261 miles) and Houston (340 miles). With Tulsa in the WAC they had 3 potential trips of 450 miles or less. Today their shortest trip is in excess of 900 miles.
