  2. Remember that in '04 the EWAC still existed. '05 is the new WAC with NMSU being Tech's closest conference mate. Here's some travel figures from another board for Tech '04 - $1,175,000 '05 - $1,600,000 (no Hawaii trip)

  8. Recruiting teammates New North Texas head coach Todd Dodge seems to be employing a tried and true tactic early in his tenure with the Mean Green -- recruiting teammates. UNT has already received commitments from Colleyville Heritage teammates Breece Johnson and Evan Walker. The Mean Green has San Antonio Alamo Heights wide receiver Sam Dibrell in the fold and is also after his teammate Giovanni Vizza, a quarterback who offered a soft commitment to Nevada earlier this winter. This weekend UNT will host the Lufkin trio of quarterback Jeremy Clayborn, linebacker A.J. Penson and defensive back Ralph Thomas. Recruiting teammates can help a team's cause. It certainly seemed to help with Walker, who followed Johnson's lead in committing to UNT. The Mean Green's staff is hoping its strategy will pay off again this weekend with the Lufkin trio. Thomas (Rice) Penson (Houston, Iowa State, UTEP) and Clayborn (Houston, Rice, Tulsa) all have offers on the table from other schools. If one commits to UNT this weekend, the other two could follow, giving the Mean Green a huge haul from one of the state's top programs.
  9. Look at the bright side. In the past we've signed lightly recruited all-district players. TD's signings so far are lightly recruited all-state players.
  10. Dodge's collection of all-state players grows New North Texas head coach Todd Dodge is quickly picking up all-state players for his first recruiting class. The latest to join the group was Colleyville Heritage wide receiver Evan Walker on Sunday. Walker was a first-team selection on the Associated Press Class 5A All-State team. Three members of the team have committed to play for the Mean Green thus far in recruiting. UNT has picked up Walker's high school teammate and fellow all-state wide receiver Breece Johnson and Southlake Carroll linebacker Justin Padron. San Antonio Alamo Heights receiver Sam Dibrell was an honorable mention all-state pick in Class 4A. The interesting aspect of all four players' backgrounds is none were not all that highly rated on a national level in terms of recruiting. Johnson, Padron and Walker only received offers from UNT. Dibrell was offered by New Mexico State and Texas State. Their background raises an interesting point: What matters more, a recruit's high school production or the evaluation of talent scouts that base their ratings in large part on what colleges are interested in a player? Chris Hurd, Johnny Quinn and Patrick Cobbs turned out to be a few of the best players the Mean Green has had in recent years, despite the fact they were not highly rated. Jamario Thomas lived up to expectations early in his career, but other more highly regarded players never panned out. Feel free to weigh in with your thoughts on the blog. Is UNT headed in the right direction by taking on some highly productive players who did not receive offers from other programs or does it bother you that some are not all that highly rated because of their size and speed?

  13. He coached the system that was in place & RF called the plays.
  14. There was still an EWAC then. Haven't seen any travel figures released with Tech's actual travel cost with their closest conference member being NMSU. Also how about the road trips for "other" sports. Didn't Tech fans have to take up a collection so the tennis team could play a tournament in El Paso ?
  15. Waters has done some very good things, however he needs to be very cautious about how much he tries to get involved in individual school athletic decisions.
  16. THREAD - North Texas http://209.200.248.16/~natex2/forum/vB/sho...ead.php?t=14353 Todd Dodge is a proven winner, on the HS level, but will be faced with a tough task @ UNT in athletic match-ups. The Sun Belt Conference shouldn't be an overly tough Conference to compete in, but the end goals are BCS Bowl/National Championships. As far as UNT looks, now... They will graduate 18 Seniors, and return a bottom heavy R-Freshmen/Freshmen and R-Sophmore/Sophmore class, of 55. QB-Daniel Meager, RB-Jamario Thomas and leading WR-Brandon Jackson return, whcih should give Todd some comfort. Outside of that, the entire program needs a face-lift, having scored only 154 pts, in 12 games. What would I do and/or see Todd doing? I'd work more with my youth. Next year is a learning process, for most of the players. Period. Everyone in the universe knows he's bringing the "Spread Offense" to UNT. My projection, for 2007... Spread Offense QB - Daniel Meager (Jr/6'2 205) (Leading passer) RB - Jamario Thomas (Sr/5'11 210) (Leading rusher) WR - Korey Washington (So/5'10 190) WR - Brock Stickler (Jr/6'3 220) WR/TE - David Collins (So/6'4 220) Optional Pckg. WR - Brandon Jackson (Sr/6'1 210) (2nd leading Reciever) TE/WR - Bryant Seidle (So/6'3 240) Optional Pckg. LOT - Jeremy Brown (Sr/6'5 310) ROT - Adam Venegas (Sr/6'3 290) LOG - Ajani Banks (So/6'3 325) ROG - Chris Eidd (So/6'3 310) C - Tyler Bailey (So/6'2 280) Short-yardage/Goal line pckg = FB - Ryan Davenport (Jr/6'2 235) Convert BACK to a 4-3 Defense. (Also run 5-2 out of pckg, dropping Brandon Moore or Maurice Holman on the line, as Primary Pass Rushers.) DT - Joseph Miller (Jr/6'3 280) DT - Montey Stevenson (Sr/6'2 290) DE - Jeremiah Chapman (Sr/6'4 245) (5th leading tckler) DE - Derek Mendoza (Sr/6'2 240) (Converted LB) SLB - Brandon Moore (Sr/6'2 240) MLB - Tobe Nwigwe (So/6'2 240) WLB - Maurice Holman (Sr/6'1 225) (2nd leading tckler) CB - Aaron Weathers (Sr/5'11 200) CB - Antoine Bush (So/5'11 180) SS - Germaine Dawson (Jr/6'1 210) (Converted LB) (3rd leading tckler) FS - Colt Mahan (Sr/6'1 200) (Converted LB) (4th leading tckler) DB/AP - Roy Loren (Sr/6'2 205) Utlity/Nickel-back + Special Teams (Speedy athlete that will see plenty of PT time.) In closing... Out of these starters, 12 players will return for the 2008 season, and assuming Todd has a solid recruiting class - next year - the future will become brighter, sooner. __________________
  17. From the Troy board via the MUTS board comments off troy board, FWIW: ...While in New Orleans I talked to a Bowl Official (NO Sports Authority Board member actually) and my soucre in the Athletic Department confirmed that Wright Waters is in negotiations with the Big 10 and Big 12 to bring down the number 6 team in either league to play the SBC Champ. Both conferences want to trade off either the Detroit Bowl (Big 10) or the Independence Bowl (Big 12). Seems our game and increased crowd not only impressed bowl officials but caught the eye of the other schools. They are looking to give their teams rewards with nice trips, not sentence them to Shreveport or Detroit for a week. New Orleans is obviously more fun. My source was pretty dead on about ticket sales lets hope he is close on this one. Bowl officials are really pushing for it as well. Although Rice brought a great crowd, they are nervous about CUSA's poor performance on the field as well as in the stands. I guess ECU didn't bring many foks to B'ham (they are locked in for another couple of years though), Houston stunk up Memphis, Tulsa brought about 3k to FTW and Southern drew by default. Waters is also talking to the Mobile Bowl as a second bowl for the league. The MAC's luster is wearing off. More details to come, but talk about a coup for the league. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ...First, the SunBelt Champ will play in the New Orleans Bowl. Second, Bowl and town officials would love to host EITHER a Big 10 or Big 12 school in replace of the current CUSA school. It's economics. And yes, it would be muched funner playing Big 10/12 6th place rather than CUSA 4th place. Come on are you kiddnig me Rice over Michigan State, Wisconsin, Colorado or Texas Tech or someone like that? Third, the Mobile Bowl, or whatever its called, would like to see a more regional team participate. Ohio didn't bring many fans and Mobile is just not interested in the MAC. Forth, the Big 10 isn't interested in playing Detroit. They already own the market and it isn't much fun for their Alumni to travel to Detroit, when a lot of them live there anyway. The Big 12 would like to travel to NO as well. OkState drove in a ton people to Shreveport, but the excitement level just isn't there. That's it in a nutshell..... THREAD FROM MUTS BOARD http://middletennessee.rivals.com/showmsg....142&style=2 THREAD FROM TROY BOARD http://www.gotroytrojans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5970 CUSA FOLKS REACT (Posted thread on their board. 18. But Texas is "A whole other country" and after all Louisiana is just Louisiana.
  19. 1. Received my 2007 on campus parking pass in the mail the last week of December. Last year it didn't arrive until (I beleive)February. 2. E-mailed that an invoice for 2007 ticket renewals would be arriving soon in the mail. Much earlier that in the past. Things just seem to be moving faster since TD has been hired.
  20. WOW !
  21. A key weekend for UNT football team Todd Dodge began one of his first key weekends as North Texas' new head football coach on Friday when a host of recruits arrived in Denton for official visit weekends. UNT already has three recruits in the fold and the number could grow quickly. The unofficial list of players who are visiting this weekend includes Euless Trinity tight end Jordan Scroggins and San Antonio Alamo Heights quarterback Giovanni Vizza. Vizza has already given a soft commitment to Nevada, but is keeping his options open. UNT coaches will try to convince him to play closer to home and follow his teammate and close friend Sam Dibrell to Denton. Scroggins could be the toughest of the bunch coming in this weekend for UNT to land. Scroggins has multiple scholarship offers and has stated that he wants to play tight end in college. Dodge runs a wide open offense that uses wide receivers more than tight ends. UNT is also loaded with young and talented tight ends, including Draylen Ross, Bryant Seidle and Charles Brown.
  22. Rice's new football regime didn't last lost. From the sportscaster's blog: Thursday, January 11, 2007 College Fball Sources: Graham accepts Tulsa offer Hi folks. Ahhh, the college football coaching carousel is simply amazing. Here's the scoop and it involves Rice Head man Todd Graham. Just when you thought he felt at home at Rice, Tulsa comes calling. There's an opening with Steve Kragthorpe exiting to Louisville and College Football sources confirmed with Local 2 sports that Tulsa officials called Graham, offered the job and that Graham has accepted the job with Tulsa. It will become official on Friday. In Graham's first season at Rice, he led the Owls to their first bowl game in 45 years leading Rice to a 7-6 record after the team finished 1-10 in 2005. Graham last spoke with Local 2 Sports earlier this week and Rice AD Chris Del Conte has not returned phone calls all week. Also on the Major Applewhite front, college football sources tell Local 2 Sports Applewhite will accept a position at either Alabama or LSU in the next 24 hours. Sources tell us he will NOT be the new head coach of Rice.

  24. Gotta love some of the tidbits in this thread. Post by My3Sons (From some of his post, seems to get pretty good info) I understand that the newly hired staff at UNT has been making plenty of phone calls to local high school talent this weekend. Players from Colleyville, Trinity, Keller, Lufkin, and oh yeah, Southlake have been on their contact list. Sure is nice to recruit without having to travel or watch too much film. Go Mean Green! Post by TexasFrog I can see Coach Dodge and his staff wrapping up some pretty good Texas talent from the Metroplex and cherry picking East Texas and some in West Texas. I do see them making North Texas a Sun Belt powerhouse and maybe even pulling off a couple of major upsets in the next few years. Post by SLCDragon to anybody douting unt's potential with dodge, just look at mizzou's O. dodge held a clinic for the tiger coaching staff and installed a colleget form of his offense. if thiat offense can win in the big 12 your out of your ind to think that dodge can't do the same in thesunbelt . dodge will absolutaly be seccessfull with the local talent he brings in.
