  3. Football: DeLoach's reputation led to return to UNT Dodge received good reviews from many in coaching fraternity 11:37 PM CST on Thursday, January 24, 2008 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer North Texas head coach Todd Dodge was driving to his office at the Mean Green Athletic Center in early December when he heard that Karl Dorrell had been fired as UCLA's head coach. That bit of news got Dodge thinking about Gary DeLoach, a coach who thrived as UNT's defensive coordinator for three years during the height of the Mean Green's four-year reign as Sun Belt Conference champions from 2001-04. "I had known Gary for a while. He recruited Carroll for UCLA," said Dodge, who coached at Southlake Carroll before taking over at UNT. "I knew about the success he had both at North Texas and at UCLA. He was the first person that came to mind when I heard that the staff at UCLA was fired." Dodge gave DeLoach a call a few weeks later once he had an opening for a defensive coordinator and eventually hired him, a move Dodge said will become official today. DeLoach will attend the Mean Green's season-ending banquet on Saturday. DeLoach's defenses led the Sun Belt Conference in both scoring and total defense in his last two seasons with the Mean Green. DeLoach coached UNT's defensive backs during his first stint with the Mean Green from 1998-2002. His role with UNT the second time around has yet to be determined. Dodge said DeLoach would coach either UNT's defensive backs or linebackers, depending on who he hires for the final open spot on his coaching staff. DeLoach will also recruit for UNT and will be responsible for an area that includes Grand Prairie, Arlington and part of Fort Worth. DeLoach will replace Ron Mendoza, who was fired after his only season as the Mean Green's defensive coordinator. Mendoza coached UNT's linebackers. Butch LaCroix resigned his position as the Mean Green's cornerbacks coach after last season. The more Dodge looked into DeLoach's background, the more comfortable he said he felt with bringing the Houston native back as UNT's defensive coordinator. "I talked to some of the coaches whose teams played against him and they had great things to say about him and his defenses," Dodge said. "Once I set my sights on him, I also asked some coaches who I respect who I should hire, without telling them that I was looking at hiring Gary. They said they would hire Gary DeLoach." Dodge said that he knew of DeLoach's reputation as a solid defensive coach and was impressed with the line of coaches he worked under. DeLoach built on that reputation during his time at UNT. The Mean Green's 2002 defense is considering among the best in UNT history. The Mean Green ranked third nationally in scoring defense with an average of 14.8 points a game and also ranked ninth in total defense with an average of 290.6 yards allowed a game. DeLoach will take on a massive rebuilding project at UNT. The Mean Green ranked last nationally with an average of 45.1 points allowed per game last season and loses several key players, including All-Sun Belt Conference defensive end Jeremiah Chapman. "I feel great about bringing coach DeLoach back," Dodge said. "He will be a great fit." BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870. His e-mail address is bvito@dentonrc.com.
  4. Actually we've got SEVEN 3-star recruits. Troy Franklin is a Scout 3-star and a 5.4 rated Rivals 2-star. 5.5 is 3-star with Rivals & they nick Franklin by .1. With all the good stuff that's been said about his ability, seems that he should have his 3rd star with Rivals also.

  7. Breaking news -- Horton commits to UNT I just heard from a solid source that Alonzo Horton, a defensive end from Northwest Mississippi C.C. has committed to UNT. Horton is ranked No. 91 by Rivals.com among junior college players and will fill an immediate need for the Mean Green. Check back on the blog later tonight for more on Horton and the return of Gary DeLoach as UNT's defensive coordinator. And be sure to post your thought on DeLoach's return on the blog.
  8. 2007 North Texas Mean Green Recap: The debut of “Dodge Ball” in Denton was a rocky one, but considering the dramatic changes on offense, the results surprised few observers. There were growing pains everywhere in Todd Dodge’s first season, none more so than on defense, where the Mean Green allowed more points than any team in the country. Recognizing that it wasn’t going to vie for a conference title, North Texas played for the future, handing the ball to true freshman QB Giovanni Vizza, who threw for a ton of yards to go along with an equal amount of rookie mistakes. Offensive Player of the Year: WR Casey Fitzgerald Defensive Player of the Year: DE Jeremiah Chapman Biggest Surprise: The Mean Green broke into the win column on Oct. 13, beating a UL-Monroe team that wound up in third place in the league. Getting its best defensive effort of the year, including two picks for touchdowns, North Texas scored the first 21 points, holding on for a 31-21 victory. Biggest Disappointment: The offense. No, this is not going to be an overnight transformation, but considering how often the Mean Green put the ball up and how many prevent defenses it faced, 24 points a game comes off as underwhelming. Take out the 62-point explosion in a loss to Navy, and North Texas managed just 21 points per game. Looking Ahead: There’s a justified feeling around Denton that it’s just a matter of time before North Texas is once again a dangerous Sun Belt opponent. Dodge had to break old habits and basically start over before moving forward with his vision for the program. He’s recruiting well, and destined to be more competitive in 2008.
  9. Off the Muts board from the Atlanta paper. from the AJC: ...The 2007 college football season ended just 17 days ago but, for a number of schools, crunch time for the 2008 season is here. At least 10 schools in the six BCS conferences, including Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech in the ACC and Kentucky and LSU in the SEC, still need a game to complete their 2008 schedules. "I can't remember having this many schools needing games at this late date," said Nick Carparelli, associate commissioner of the Big East who has three schools (Louisville, Rutgers, Syracuse) still looking for games. And for those schools the clock is ticking because a lot of very important people are waiting: ? Season-ticket holders are set to renew but want know exactly what they are getting. ? Conferences need the final schedules because, in the case of the ACC and Big East, the league office waits until late January to assign dates to the conference games. ? TV needs the final schedules so they can sit down with the conferences this spring and start picking the games they like for September. "For a lot of different reasons football scheduling has become complicated," said Mitch Barnhart, the athletics director at Kentucky. "Finding a game this time of year is very complicated ? and expensive." Make that very expensive. Arkansas, for example, needed a game for Nov. 1. It already had one Division I-AA team (Western Illinois) on its schedule and didn't want another because NCAA rules stipulate that only one of those games can count toward the six wins needed to qualify for a bowl. Tulsa had a contract to play Texas Tech on Aug. 30 but also an open date on Nov. 1. Tulsa paid a $150,000 fee to Texas Tech, which is stipulated in the contract, in order to cancel the game and play at Arkansas for a guaranteed payment of $850,000. A Division I-AA team would have received about half that much in guaranteed money to make the trip. The move made good business sense for both schools but it's fair to say that Tulsa athletics director Bubba Cunningham and Texas Tech athletics director Gerald Myers, who now needs a game, will not be exchanging Christmas cards this year. "It's a tough business," Mark Womack, the executive associate commissioner of the SEC, said. And it is a business that operates under the law of supply and demand. "If you need a game on a specific date this late in the process it is going to cost you," said Rick Chryst, the commissioner of the Mid-American Conference. "We haven't seen guaranteed games worth $1 million, but I don't think we're far away." Georgia Tech has been trying for three months to find a non-conference opponent to replace Army, which was supposed to host the Yellow Jackets on Oct. 11, 2008 at West Point. But last October, just moments before the two teams were set to play at Bobby Dodd Stadium, Army athletics director Kevin Anderson handed Georgia Tech counterpart Dan Radakovich an envelope. Inside was a check for $125,000 and a letter stating that Army had decided not to play the 2008 game. Now Georgia Tech faces the likelihood that it will have two Division I-AA teams on its non-conference schedule. The Yellow Jackets open on Aug. 30 against Jacksonville State and are expected to announce another I-AA opponent late this week or early next week. If Tech is forced to schedule a second I-AA opponent, it is going to have to go 7-5 against a schedule that includes home games against FSU, Miami and Mississippi State, and on the road against Clemson, Virginia Tech and Georgia. "It's tough on our season-ticket holders but when somebody pulls out of a contract that late your options are really limited," Wayne Hogan, Tech's associate athletics director, said. For most schools in this situation there are really only two options: 1) Pay the large guarantee to get a Division I-A opponent or 2) Pay a Division I-AA school which will take less money and not require a return game. That is why three teams in the ACC (Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech) are expected to play two Division I-AA schools this season. That number could be four when Virginia Tech eventually fills an opening on its 2008 schedule........ Link: Tech among schools still looking for '08 opponent

  11. 21. Todd Dodge, North Texas – Dodge’s incredible run as a high school coach in Texas may carry over to the college ranks, but it’s going to take time; probably a little more time than most expected. The Mean Green struggled to compete in most games, winning just two and laboring to pick up the nuances of Dodge’s free-wheeling passing attack. In the coach’s defense, North Texas spent most of the year with a true freshman, Giovanni Vizza, taking snaps, and was saddled with the nation’s weakest defense. 12. Early '90s ? How about 2000-2003.
  13. Is Jones really the "big bad wolf" that's going to make life a lot tougher for TD and the Mean Green ? Have any BCS schools ever made offered and tried to get him ? In 9 years at Hawaii, his schedule was, to say the least, over loaded with home games. 1999 - 9 2000 - 8 2001 - 9 2002 - 8 2003 - 7 2004 - 8 2005 - 7 2006 - 8 2007 - 7 In 9 years Jones never beat a BCS team on their turf. Actually in 9 years, Jones only played FOUR teams on their turf other than WAC teams at away games, losing all four. Just wondering what his record would really be without the over load on home games and teams going to Hawaii to play in the sun as well as play Hawaii ? Two of three coaches before Jones had winning records at Hawaii. Dick Tomey was there 10 years (77-86), had 2 losing seasons and an overall record of 63-46. Left Hawaii for Arizona where he coached 13 years ('87-2000). Bob Wagner was there 9 seasons ('87-'95) with a 58-49 record. Did have 4 losing seasons including his last two years there. The only coach there for the past 30 years with an overall losing record was the one that Jones replaced. Fred VonAppen ('96-'98) was 5-31 with no winning seasons. BUT - Go back even further. Larry Price ('74-76) did have an overall losing record of 15-18, but 2 of 3 winning seasons. Don Holmes ('68-'73) never had a losing season & his overall record was 46-17. VonAppen is actually the only coach at Hawaii in 41 years that has done zip.

  15. Breaking news -- UNT lands DL North Texas landed a defensive lineman after all over the weekend. Tevinn Cantly, a 6-4, 292-pounder from Arlington Lamar confirmed on Monday night that he has committed to play for the Mean Green. UNT was the only Division I school to offer Cantly a scholarship, but Fordham, Stony Brook, Northern Iowa and Missouri State showed interest. Cantly started on the varsity team for just one season and didn't settle in as a defensive lineman until the end of the season. He didn't make the all-district team, but has the frame to be a Division I player. The addition of Cantly came on a weekend when two of UNT's other defensive line targets elected to play elsewhere. Defensive end Shane McCardell of Beaumont Westbook committed to Baylor and Miami transfer Chris Perry committed to Texas Tech.
  16. Could you seriously see TD even considering this ? I for one don't think so.
  17. BREAKING NEWS: Former SMU coach Phil Bennett offered defensive coordinator's job at Marshall Mark Whipple front runner for offensive coordinator position by Chuck Landon Daily Mail sportswriter HUNTINGTON -- Former Southern Methodist Coach Phil Bennett has been offered Marshall's defensive coordinator job. "Yes, I did offer it to Phil," said Marshall Coach Mark Snyder today. "He's my first choice. We had him in here this weekend and it was a good visit." Snyder is seeking a replacement for Steve Dunlap, who left after one season as Marshall's defensive coordinator to rejoin the coaching staff at West Virginia University. Bennett, 51, coached SMU for six seasons, including a 6-6 record in 2006. But after the Mustangs' record dropped to 1-7 last season, Bennett was notified on Oct. 28 that he would be fired after the final game. The Mustangs finished 1-11. The former SMU head coach, who is renown as a defensive coach, was seen here in a downtown hotel Friday night. If Snyder has his way, everyone will be seeing a lot more of Bennett. "I would like to have Phil," said Snyder. "I just don't know if he will take the job. He had to go back home and talk it over with his wife and kids. He has a daughter, who will be a senior in high school next year. So, they need to talk about it." Besides that, Bennett has other options. "He's got another good college offer and, then, there's the NFL," said Snyder. "I hope he takes our job. I have to be honest, he's the first choice. I should know by Tuesday on Phil." Although Snyder plans to fill the defensive coordinator vacancy first, he also is getting closer to finding an offensive coordinator to replace Larry Kueck, who wasn't retained after last season. "Mark Whipple is the front-runner," said Snyder. Whipple is the former Massachusetts head coach, who led the Minutemen to an NCAA I-AA National Championship. Then, he became the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback coach in 2004 under then-Coach Bill Cowher. New Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin fired Whipple last Jan. 25, however, replacing him with Ken Anderson. "Mark has been to our practices four of five times," said Snyder. "I really like him. We just have to see if he is going to get any NFL offers." Snyder insists he will have both new coordinators on-board before Feb. 6. "I'll have the coordinators before signing day," he said, referring to national signing day.

  22. So your problem with one person is reason enough to withold financial support for your school's athletic program financially?
  23. Hmmmm. Wonder if Jones will personally attend any parole/probation hearings or just send a surragate ?
