Junior OL Banks likely done at UNT 10:29 AM CST on Saturday, February 9, 2008 By Brett Vito/Staff Writer Junior offensive lineman Ajani Banks is no longer enrolled at North Texas and said he might not return next season. Banks appeared in six games as a redshirt freshman in 2006, but did not play for the Mean Green in 2007. He was a member of UNT’s 2005 recruiting class and spent his first season with the Mean Green as a redshirt. When reached at his home in Spring, Texas, Banks said he was unsure if he would return to UNT in the fall. Banks would become the second backup offensive lineman to leave the Mean Green since the end of the season if he elects not to return. Tackle Robert Peachey said in late January that he has decided not to return to the team for his junior season after serving as a key backup and starting one game in 2007. UNT will also lose starting right tackle Adam Venegas, who was a senior last season. Banks, 6-3, 328, was one of the largest players on the Mean Green’s roster in the 2007 campaign. UNT’s offensive line is expected to undergo a dramatic overhaul in the offseason. The Mean Green signed a pair of highly regarded Mississippi junior college offensive linemen in Gabe Hollivay of Itawamaba Commu-nity College and Nate Jenkins of Pearle River Community College. Both will arrive at UNT in the fall after meeting eligibility requirements to transfer to an NCAA Bowl Championship Subdivision school. UNT also signed three high school offensive linemen and will have a pair of players entering their redshirt freshmen seasons in tackle Matt Tomlinson and center J.J. Johnson. Wasn't Schnellenberger a big critic of TD's early recruiting strategy ? “I don’t want to take anything away from this class. This class was outstanding and the best we’ve ever had, but we’re not competing with the very top-of-the line Miamis, Floridas, Florida States, Penn States and Ohio States. And the reason why we’re not is those damn early commitments. People are offering these guys scholarships without even coming on their campus sometimes. All that’s doing is leading to a bunch of heartache for a lot of people. And it’s causing us heartache because we’re haven’t done that. I’m hard-pressed to think I’ll ever do it, but I’ve got to do something so we can get a chance. We have to get a chance to get them on a visit and our coaches can talk to them and show film and get them to come to a game. Riley Dodge Highlight Of 2008 Recruit Class
MeanGreen61 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Rivals has him as a 5.7 3-star just .1 away from 4-star (5.8). -

I think that may be a pretty fair assumption. TD did bring DeLoach in to handle his defense and he was on-board well before the decision was made. Would be difficult be beleive that DeLoach didn't have a major say in the decision to hire him.

Riley's here because of TD. Hard to over emphasis, because that's the only reason we were able to get him.

Troy, Middle Pulling Away In Rivals Rankings
MeanGreen61 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Actually If you knock off the bonus points, Troy, MTSU & UNT are about neck & neck in average stars per recruit. Also the Muts "nationall ranked" duel threat quarterback is a 5.6 Rivals rating and Riley is a 5.7 but he is classified as an athelete. Troy 2.24 UNT 2.23 Muts 2.23 ASU 2.0 ULM 1.95 FAU 1.93 FIU 1.88 -
The 3-star is Jenkins & he is number 8.
-
Correct on the ratings. I just rechecked Rivals. Jenkins is the 3-star & Hollivay is not rated yet.

A little more on Jenkins, Hollivay I talked to both Gabe Hollivay and Nathaniel Jenkins today about their decisions to commit to UNT. Perhaps the most interesting aspect to either offensive linemen is that it appears as if UNT is about to take a calculated risk by signing Jenkins, a monster of a player at 6-4, 340. Jenkins' coach Tim Hatten said that he still has a lot of work to do to qualify academically. Jenkins needs to pass 19 credit hours this semester and over the summer to be eligible to play at UNT. Jenkins said he wasn't worried about making it through 19 hours and Hatten said he was confident the sophomore will make it. Some other schools might have been scared off by the long road Jenkins faces. No other Division I school offered a scholarship. Jenkins will get a look at both guard and tackle at UNT. Hollivay was the more highly recruited of the two players. Memphis, Southern Miss, UAB and Arkansas State all offered scholarships to the 6-3, 320-pound guard. The Clarion Ledger rated the top 10 junior college prospects in the state and the second 15, where Hollivay is ranked. Rivals.com rates Hollivay as a three-star prospect. Both players said the opportunity to play immediately was a factor in their decisions. Post your take on the blog. Do you expect both Hollivay and Jenkins to start at UNT next season?
