Rivals Spring Ball Story Lines.
MeanGreen61 replied to MeanGreenEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Apparently a change was made. The buzz: New defensive coordinator Gary DeLoach returns to his old job after spending time at UCLA, and he takes over a unit that needs an overhaul after finishing last in Division I-A in scoring defense. If the defense improves, the Mean Green have a shot at a winning record in the conference. -

Absolutely correct ! Some additional trivia about Cedric. As a freshman at NT he was a defensive back, moved to linebacker as a sophomore and to the line as a junior & senior. -

Didn't Hardman have a track scholarship & initially walk-on as a 175 lb or so DB for football? -
INSIDE SLANT Having been a high school coaching legend at Southlake Carroll High School in Texas, North Texas second-year coach Todd Dodge should have a good feel for prep talent. His first true signing class is comprised of 19 high school players from Texas, including 12 from the Dallas-Fort Worth Area. One the biggest signees was his son, a quarterback who had originally committed to Texas. "I am very, very excited," Dodge told the Denton Record-Chronicle, referring to coaching his son. "I feel like we are very blessed as a family. It's a unique situation that doesn't come about very often at the Division I level. I can say that myself and my wife got out of the way and let it be Riley's decision. He wants to be at North Texas because of the great things he sees going on here." Dodge signed three junior college defensive backs, which was a key considering the secondary struggled so much a year ago. UNT also signed two juco offensive linemen, Nate Jenkins (Pearl River, Miss.) and Gabe Hollivay (Itawamba, Miss.) who should contribute immediately. TOP RECRUITS: QB Riley Dodge — The Parade All-American is the son of coach Todd Dodge and will have an opportunity to compete for the starting job as a true freshman. OL Gabe Hollivay — The 6-3, 320-pound junior college transfer will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact. DB Justin Edwards — The 6-1, 185-pound junior college transfer should make an impact for a secondary that struggled mightily last year. NOTES, QUOTES —Ron Mendoza was fired as defensive coordinator after the Mean Green ranked last in the league in total defense scoring defense. Former UNT defensive coordinator Gary DeLoach was hired after serving as defensive backs coach for the previous five seasons. —UNT figures to have an intriguing battle at quarterback this fall. Giovanni Vizza set the Mean Green record for passing yards by a freshman last season, but he will get serious competition from incoming quarterback Riley Dodge, the son of UNT coach Todd Dodge. The younger Dodge was a Parade All-American who had originally committed to Texas. QUOTE TO NOTE: "This is one of the most exciting days to be a college football coach with this signing class this is an exciting day to be a fan of North Texas football. The tremendous talent of these young men and the quality of this class is validation for all of the hard work my coaching staff has put in during the recruiting process. It confirms that these kids believe that North Texas is a great place to be a student-athlete and a tremendous honor that they have chosen to join us in our quest to develop this into a championship program." — UNT coach Todd Dodge. STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL SPRING AHEAD: The Mean Green's No. 1 priority in the offseason will be fixing the worst defense in the Sun Belt Conference. Former defensive coordinator Gary DeLoach returns after serving as a secondary coach at UCLA the previous five seasons. The best players of last year's group are gone in linemen Jeremiah Chapman and Montey Stevenson. Safety Aaron Weathers and linebacker Maurice Holman also must be replaced. It's not going to happen overnight, but the best recruit in the offseason will likely be DeLoach. Giovanni Vizza had a very solid year at quarterback as a true freshman, but Riley Dodge, the son of head coach Todd Dodge, could certainly push him in the fall.

Often overlooked as just a weak non-BCS conference, the universities that make up C-USA have made changes recently that have started paying tangible dividends. Schools like Southern Mississippi, Houston and Southern Methodist University all feel they have upgraded their coaching staffs while other teams like 2007 C-USA champions Central Florida have added state-of-the-art upgrades to their facilities. These changes, among others, have sent a clear message to the college football world: C-USA plans to compete with the ‘haves’ of the NCAA and they mean to do it soon. Sun Belt Leads The Way In Signing Florida Recruits
MeanGreen61 posted a topic in Mean Green Football
Off the muts board. excerpt from a recruiting article in the Orlando paper: ...When the ink finally dried on National Signing Day, 371 Floridians had signed, with the Sun Belt Conference (85) leading the way, followed by the ACC (75), SEC (54), Big East (38), Mid-American (30), Big Ten (25) and ConferenceUSA (24)..... ...There's a reason why so many Floridians were recruited to the Sun Belt. FAU'sHoward Schnellenberger created the "State of Miami" when he coached the 'Canes more than two decades ago. Mario Cristobal, a former UM player and coach, now is in his second year at FIU and he is following that theory, signing 12 from Palm Beach, Broward and Dade among 22 Floridians. Four are from state champion Miami Booker T. Washington. Troy (13 Floridians) has had numerous successes with Florida players and MiddleTennessee's Rick Stockstill has a Florida pedigree. He was a high school quarterback at Fernandina Beach, played at FSU, coached at UCF and Bethune-Cookman. He signed a dozen Floridians. "Florida is over-saturated with players and every school is recruiting Florida and the well has not run dry yet," Stockstill told GoMiddle.com. "There is something there for everybody. It's a state with a lot of skill in it, and there are so many players in Florida there is enough for all the schools in the state, and for those coming in to get quality players. We have to do a good job evaluating the ones we have a legitimate chance to get."....... It's never too early to get ready for next year's signing day http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-...,2759366.column -

Remember it was over forty years ago and a totally different era with fewer opportunities even being available. Understand his high school team couldn't use the locker room of their home field. Today, he would have been on nearly everyone's radar. -
Is this the model in the office ?

It was the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden before a crowd of 16,000.

Have we ever really had him ? 6 games in '06 after red shirting in '05 and 0 games in '07 isn't much to talk about.
