The buzz: New defensive coordinator Gary DeLoach returns to his old job after spending time at UCLA, and he takes over a unit that needs an overhaul after finishing last in Division I-A in scoring defense. If the defense improves, the Mean Green have a shot at a winning record in the conference.

Often overlooked as just a weak non-BCS conference, the universities that make up C-USA have made changes recently that have started paying tangible dividends. Schools like Southern Mississippi, Houston and Southern Methodist University all feel they have upgraded their coaching staffs while other teams like 2007 C-USA champions Central Florida have added state-of-the-art upgrades to their facilities.
