Kansas State Wildcats 2008 Schedule Aug. 30 North Texas Sept. 6 Montana State Sept. 17 @ Louisville Sept. 27 Louisiana-Lafayette Oct. 4 Texas Tech Oct. 11 @ Texas A&M Oct. 18 @ Colorado Oct. 25 Oklahoma Nov. 1 @ Kansas Nov. 8 @ Missouri Nov. 15 Nebraska Nov. 22 Iowa State 2007 overall record: 5-7 2007 conference record: 3-5 Returning starters Offense: 7, defense: 5, kicker/punter: 1 Spring answers 1. Ian is the man: After struggling at linebacker last season, Ian Campbell returned to defensive end and quickly showed the form that allowed him to notch 11 ½ sacks two years ago. "He'll probably play with his hand down more than he did last season," KSU defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar said. "We're going to move him around so teams can't zero in on him." 2. Valentine steps up: The departure of James Johnson left Coach Ron Prince scrambling for new running backs. The most intriguing was Keithen Valentine, a transfer from Mississippi Delta Community College who rushed for 104 yards in the spring game. "He's a kid who found us," Prince told the Manhattan Mercury. "We were in Mississippi recruiting other kids and he came to us and said, 'Hey I remember Darren Sproles. I used to watch Kansas State. I'd love to walk on.'" 3. Building a new identity: Prince wasn't happy with his team's late collapse last season, leading to adopting what he termed as a "Cold War" mentality during the spring. Most practices were closed and were held at night. "You don't go out and play the way we played at the end of last year and feel like things can go on status quo," Prince told the Topeka Capital-Journal. "I wasn't pleased with it all. It wasn't acceptable, and I'm not going to tolerate it." Fall questions 1. JC contributions: Can the influx of junior college players help? Prince opted for immediate help with 19 junior-college transfers among his 32-member recruiting class. After yielding 198 points in his final four games, Prince knew he needed immediate assistance. It led to him signing a bumper crop of 11 defensive players and a punter for his defense. We'll see come September how this strategy will work. 2. Jordy Nelson's replacement: The former walk-on developed into the most productive single-season receiver in KSU's history. Holdovers Ernie Pierce, Cedric Wilson and Lamark Brown got most of the work as top returning receiver Deon Murphy sat out spring practice because of academics. But keep an eye out for heralded junior college transfer Adrian Hilburn, who was ranked as the fifth-best juco receiver in the nation last season at City College of San Francisco. 3. Where's the offense?:Kansas State's offense showed little life in a disappointing spring game where the two teams combined for three points and 204 total yards. Prince defended the struggles by saying his coordinators were playing the game close to the vest. "They were trying to win the game," he told reporters after the game. "There weren't a lot of balls in the air. It might not have been aesthetically pleasing to some, but I understand it.".

GMAC Bowl in discussions with other leagues, and a new look to Ladd-Peebles could only help Tuesday, May 13, 2008 By GARETH CLARY Sports Reporter The GMAC Bowl is exploring a new combination of conference tie-ins, and proposed enhancements to Ladd-Peebles Stadium that could help attract a relationship with a high-profile league. The bowl's contracts with Conference USA and the Mid-America Conference expire after the 2009 contest, which is set for Jan. 6. GMAC Bowl officials have been in talks about new tie-ins beginning in 2010 with several conferences, including the Southeastern Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East, Western Athletic Conference and the Sun Belt. "Where we stand is we're talking to a lot of people and we'll probably make some changes," said GMAC Bowl President Jerry Silverstein. "It looks like that. It's positive that the city is going to do some things to the stadium that's going to really help a lot and bring some interest to it with everything that's going on in Mobile with the economy and businesswise. "We hope to have some announcements to make probably in the next 60 days of what our future is. We're still working on it. We're not dotting 'I's' and crossing 'T's' yet, but we're real close." Silverstein declined to reveal which conferences were providing the most serious interest in hooking up with the GMAC Bowl. He noted the WAC has Louisiana Tech in the Central Standard Time zone and that Troy of the Sun Belt was 8-4 last year, but didn't receive a bowl bid. Silverstein also pointed out that the SEC's new tie-in with the Papajohns.com Bowl at Legion Field in Birmingham, announced last week, is only a two-year deal. That new contract represents the SEC's ninth bowl tie-in. "That leaves the door open for some things in the future," Silverstein said. "That would be the ultimate if you could get in the rotation where you're guaranteed a team." Silverstein acknowledged there would be obstacles to overcome for that scenario to unfold. "We're a mid-major bowl and we want to do the best we can," he said. "We have limited resources with the size of our stadium and what we have to deal with. We have only 40,000 seats instead of the 72,000 they have in Birmingham. We would have to raise our ticket prices probably double from what they are to be comparable, which is not the Mobile market. "That's not to say that between spon sorship and TV contracts in situations that could come about that it's impossible to do." The GMAC Bowl nearly pulled an SEC team through a loophole in its contract with the MAC last year. That clause allowed the game to choose an SEC team that went 7-5 and was not selected to fill one of the league's tie-ins. Steve Spurrier's South Carolina squad was 6-6 and not invited to a bowl game. An appeal to the NCAA to waive the 7-5 requirement was rejected, so the GMAC Bowl was unable to invite the Gamecocks to town with their legendary coach and legions of traveling fans. Silverstein said the size of Ladd-Peebles Stadium hasn't been a major issue in discussions with some of the major conferences. "There's not really a size limit," said Silverstein, adding that it would be a nice carrot if the stadium had another 10,000 seats. "They want tickets and they want their payouts. A lot of bowls are going more regionally instead of sending teams from the Northeast to California or something. "We're in a great spot here in Mobile. It's just making it all work out and making the numbers work." Silverstein said the game has a little bit of an edge because its contracts come up a year earlier than many comparable bowls with four-year arrangements. "It allows us to know what the landscape is and we've been working for a couple of years," he said. "We couldn't really make any of those moves being under contract and where things are. We're out of sequence and that started several years ago with some renewals and things like that. It probably can be an advantage for us in a lot of things."

Ten non-BCS conference players who could make or break their team’s chances in 2008. WR Casey Fitzgerald, North Texas- A bigtime playmaker in every sense of the word, Fitzgerald thrived in his first year under Head Coach Todd Dodge, leading a resurgent Mean Green offense in reception (111), receiving yards (1322) and receiving touchdowns (12.) His 11.9 yard average doesn’t jump out on paper, but catch and runs of 99 and 69 yards sure do on tape. While he has the physical skills of speed and body control that make him an NFL prospect, it’s his recognition ability and route running which make him the dominant receiver in the Sun Belt conference. I’m expecting Dodge and North Texas to be at the top of the Sun Belt in 2008, and this guy is a big reason why. Not a football playing member. If true, looks like all three non-football members may possibly be in the process of changing conference addresses in the not to distant future. Off the Muts board. Post by SpaceRaider UALR leaving the Sun Belt? last May, the Sun Belt Conference presidents unanimously approved "the Sun Belt Conference Chief Executive Officer Initiatives," a set of comprehensive performance and membership standards that set forth requirements and expectations for various sports and schools. One particular standard was a membership standard requiring member institutions "to sponsor a minimum of fifteen (15) sports in which the conference offers a championship. There shall be a five-year (2012-2013) grace period for UNO and Denver to reach this standard." Late this past week, UALR, one of three SBC schools not sponsoring FB at any level, dropped men's tennis, leaving their athletic program with only 14 sports, according to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, which puts UALR in direct violation of the membership standard referenced above. Will the Sun Belt put UALR on notice?

Bringing in a team from Arizona ? You'd think Jones would get an in-state team as an opponent for the Irish. Notre Dame to host Arizona State in Cowboys' new home in 2013 Associated Press Updated: May 8, 2008, 4:08 PM ET ARLINGTON, Texas -- Notre Dame and Arizona State will play in the new $1 billion home of the Dallas Cowboys in 2013. The Fighting Irish and Sun Devils announced Thursday they'll meet Oct. 5, 2013, at the facility in Arlington, Texas. Other events already scheduled for the building: The Super Bowl after the 2010 season, the Cotton Bowl after the 2009 season, the Big 12 championship game in 2009 and 2010 and a series between Texas A&M and Arkansas. "Bringing the storied tradition of Notre Dame football to the new stadium in Arlington to take on a national power like Arizona State makes this an exciting day for all of North Texas," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a news release. The complex with a retractable roof is scheduled to open for the 2009 season. Notre Dame will be the home team for the game, which will give NBC the television rights. "We're thrilled to have a chance to return to North Texas where Notre Dame football has had such a rich tradition, particularly through our appearances in the Cotton Bowl over the years," Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White said. Arizona State AD Lisa Love called it "a magnificent game for our fans and alumni." The Irish and Sun Devils played a home-and-home series in 1998-99, with Notre Dame winning both.

TD sure doesn't believe in "smurf" receivers. You know those small, flighty, darty types. Made a quick count & check of our WR's and income recruits. Of 21 listed as wide receivers, only 5 (including Casey Fitzgerald) are under 6'. Tall, tough, fast receivers with good hands are a DB's nightmare. Here's our breakdown. 6'5" - 1 6'4" - 2 6'3" - 2 6'2" - 4 6'1" - 2 6'0" - 5 5''11" - 2 5'10" - 1 5'9" - 2

CUSA board post. TEXAS TECH ATHELTICS LOST MORE THAN $200,000 ON BOWL APPEARANCE By Alex Ybarra, Daily Toredor "A shortfall in travel allowance given by the Big 12 Conference caused the Texas Tech football team to reach into its financial pockets after the team's trip to the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl Jan. 1 in Jacksonville Florida." "Bobby Gleason, Tech's athletic director, said while the numbers still may fluctuate, the athletic department spend $202,240 out of its regular operating budget of $44 million, which goes to show that the public can be misled when it sees the bowl payout numbers." "Most fans read something that says that the Gator Bowl payout is $2.5 million," Tech Atheltic Director Gleason said. "Most fans think that goes to us because we're playing in the Gator Bowl, but they don't understand that all that money is paid to the conference." "Gleason said, in turn, the Big 12 Conference disperses a formula based travel allowance among the teams attending bowl games." "With (750) people traveling, it gets very expensive very quickly," Gleason said. "So we basically hope to break even on that travel allowance each year. We hope that we spend a little bit less than what it is, but it does take most of the money to travel." "Gleason said because the Gator Bowl is a tier one bowl--a level below a BCS bowl--the formula provided Tech with a bowl appearance fee of $925,000 and a reimbursement policy that give $199 per mile traveled." "According to the bowl's financial report, the trip to Jacksonville equaled $239,198 in reimbursement money, so Tech received just under $1.1 million." "To put it in perspective, Gleason said the appearance fee for a BCS Bowl is $1.5 million along with the reimbursement policy." "According to the report, Tech subtracted nearly $74,000 after ticket sales did not equal the total price of complimentary tickets used by the university." "Gleason said Tech used about half of the 12,000 tickets that were availble to sell." "The financial report indicated that Tech spent approximately 68 percent of its allowance on transportation, meals and lodging, while roughly 27 percent went toward awards and extra compensation for staff."
