Belt's primary interest is bowls within the conference footprint. Article exerpts Discussions for the Sun Belt's possible second bowl tie-in have included the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho, and Emerald Bowl in San Francisco — both of which offer no geographic link to Sun Belt schools, predominantly located in the southeast. Waters said a Sun Belt school could miss a prime opportunity at a regional bowl if the conference signed a contract with any western bowls. "What happens next year if the SEC gets two in the BCS, and it can't fill the (Papa John's Bowl) in Birmingham," Waters said. "If the SEC can't fill it, then who goes there? Well, if we have an available team, it would be a prime candidate to go there. But if that team is already going to another bowl outside the region, then it can't go to Birmingham." The Sun Belt, along with at least four other conferences, has reportedly been trying to land a spot in the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., which ends its contract with Conference USA and Mid-American Conference after the Jan. 6, 2009 game. South Alabama, a Sun Belt member school located in Mobile, will begin its football program in 2009 and move to I-A status in 2013. Most bowl contracts expire in the next two years, according to Waters. There will be 68 teams filling 34 bowls this season. Seventy-one teams were bowl-eligible last year.

Phil Steele Comments On North Texas
MeanGreen61 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
From a post on the Troy board. Steele sez the Mean Green will be green. NCAA Team Experience Ratings: Troy (#4 nationally) FAU (#6 nationally) ASU (#33 nationally) ULM (#33 nationally) FIU (#40 nationally) WKU (#40 nationally) ULL (#56 nationally) UNT (#75 nationally) MT (#88 nationally) -
A series with Baylor is a no-brainer for the Ponies. Nearby former SWC mates, private schools, Big XII opponent. Even with us having a new stadium Baylor would still get the nod.

Phil Steele Comments On North Texas

WKU (in transition) is being included. They make it 120. -
Pineapqlewiley has a thread on the Muts board with stuff from Phil Steele's magazine. Here's some North Texas comments. North Texas signed the most heralded recruit for 2008 in Riley Dodge. Phil has him rated as the #8 QB prospect in the nation. MT will host North Texas as their final game. However, the home team is just 2-5 all-time in this series and MT has never beaten North Texas in Floyd Stadium. North Texas has only been shut out one time in Sun Belt play. That was against MT in 2006, a 35-0 bloodbath. North Texas has an enrollment of 34,153 which makes it one of the largest colleges in the state of Texas. North Texas signee Alonzo Horton is rated by Steele as the #31 best DE in this class. He played for Auburn in 05, went to JC in 06, and has now signed with North Texas. I have a feeling this guy is gonna be a headache for us. Comments by wiley By looking at PS numbers based on recruits ranks, North Texas blew the doors off of everyone else in the SBC. If I was motivated enough and averaged each schools PS # North Texas would be around 200 while the rest of the SBC would be around 300. You figure there's 120 D-1A schools, and on average lets say each school signs 4 D-linemen per year. That means that the #400 rated D-Linemen should be going to a team around the 100 range. That isn't the case with North Texas though. They got a lot of kids in the 100s and 200s. It will still be a few years though before they are actually ready to contend, but unless their coaching staff just sucks they are gonna win some championships and beat some big name teams if they keep bringing in that kinda talent. In my opinion, a lot will depend on what happens this season and next. If UNT has another 2 bad years, Dodge won't be so hot in Texas anymore and I don't think he will have the same appeal to recruits as he does now. He's still very fresh in the minds of Texas athletes and coaches because of the insane success he had at SLC. I wonder how long he's gonna be able to play that card. 2008 Projected Run Defense: #117 is North Texas 2008 Projected Pass Defense: #120 is North Texas 2008 Projected Points Defense: #120 North Texas 2008 Projected Total Defense: #120 North Texas

DALLAS — Monetary guarantees for non-conference home football games are rising at "a fairly alarming rate," according to a top athletics director, and in some cases surpassing or approaching $1 million. Ohio State, for example, will pay $1.4 million for Navy to come to Columbus in the 2009 season. Wisconsin will pay "just under $1 million" for each of two home games against Northern Illinois, according to athletics director Barry Alvarez. Texas is paying $900,000 to Florida Atlantic this fall. Arkansas is paying Tulsa $850,000, and Georgia and Tennessee are paying more than $800,000 for a single home foe. USA TODAY ARTICLE http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/foo...uarantees_N.htm

Off the muts board. It is not shaping up to be a good next few years for those Division I college athletic programs who don't put 70,000 paying fans in the seats every college football Saturday (translation: non-BCS conference teams). The've spent the past decade or so in an arms race for facilities and coaching salaries that far exceeds their means. When 100 of the 119 Division I-A athletic programs ran deficits in 2006, it's pretty safe to assume some of the deepest shades of red could be found in leagues like Conference USA, the Sun Belt and the WAC. The revenue from attendance simply doesn't measure up to the escalating costs of doing business and it is not offset by television revenue. Many of these schools have had to double their overall athletics budgets over the past decade, but that does not come with a corresponding spike in attendance. Listed below are the returning starters for all the major college teams. We have even expanded the list to not only include the offensive & defensive starters but also the special teams. Of course, there are 11 starters on offense & defense, and on special teams we list 2 possibilities (Kicker & Punter). An (*) next to the offense means the quarterback is returning. When I look at a team for the upcoming year one of the first factors I look at is the amount of returning starters. Last year there were 9 teams in the NCAA that had 18 or more returning starters and 7 of the 9 improved their record from 2006. Making the list were teams like Virginia which went from 5-7 to 9-3 and Florida Atlantic which went from 5-7 to Sun Belt Champs. Teams with 17 returning starters included Central Florida which went from 4-8 to CUSA Champs and Illinois which went from 2-10 to the Rose Bowl!! On the other end of the spectrum there were 33 teams last year that had 12 or fewer returning starters and of the 33 only 8 managed to improve their record. Some of the less experienced teams that really dropped last year included Notre Dame which had just 9 returning starters and went from the Sugar Bowl to 3-9! Nebraska went from 9-4 to 5-7 with just 11 returning starters and Northern Illinois with 12 returnig starters went from 7-6 to 2-10. From the muts board. Posted by Space Raider This is the first three-year stretch in which UNLV hasn’t won at least three games in a season, and the program bleeds about $4 million a year from the department. Rogers, tabbed by Time magazine as one of the top 12 philanthropists in the country for donating or pledging $275 million to various colleges and universities, looks at that bottom line and comes to a quick conclusion. Hamrick doesn’t envision UNLV’s shutting down its football program, but Rogers says that will have to be considered if the state keeps slashing its financial aid. But, no, he can’t see UNLV dropping football, even though Rogers thinks Sam Boyd Stadium should be razed. “It can damn near run in perpetuity in the basement, like it is, and we’ll tolerate it,” Rogers says. “Other sports will fill the hole. There will be moaning and groaning and (complaining), but I don’t see it coming to an end.” http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2008/jun/1...p-may-escalate/

javastan I.T.S. Head Coach Post #3193 Beaumont September 6 - UNT Reply I moved my daughter to a new apartment in Denton this weekend. UNT is already publicizing the September 6 game with TU. I will be there! We had a pretty large TU group at the last game there, and I don't see any reason why this year shouldn't be any different. One thing has changed however; the rat infested Radisson hotel across from the stadium is closed, so you'll have to find another place to stay if you're coming in from out of town. http://tulsa.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=17...115&style=2
