True, but the BIG SIX (aq or automatic qualifiers) conferences are commonly referred to as the BCS conferences and Indys, MAC. WAC, MWC,CUSA & Belt are commonly referred to as Non-BCS.

4-T) NORTH TEXAS - The Mean Green has the potential to be the surprise team in the league if freshman QB Riley Dodge is everything he's made out to be. Offense - A year ago this time, Dodge orally committed to Texas, but decided to follow his dad, Todd Dodge, who took over as head coach at North Texas last season. There is a chance he could redshirt coming off shoulder surgery, but even if he does, Giovanni Vizza is capable of leading the team after a solid 124.2 QB rating his last four starts. Four starters return to the O-line and even though the unit allowed 39 sacks, only 10 came in the final five games. Casey Fitzgerald returns as the school's single season reception and yardage leader, but watch out for two underclassmen - Even Fentriss and Sam Roberson - to make huge strides. Defense - It's difficult to imagine North Texas improving on its last place FBS finish in scoring defense (45.1 ppg), especially with its top five tacklers departing. However, Dodge brought in Gary DeLoach as his new defensive coordinator. DeLoach was the team's DC earlier in the decade, and his unit finished third in the nation in scoring "D" back in 2002. It might take some time, but this defense can only improve. Outlook - North Texas played much better than its 2-10 (1-6) record would indicate. The Mean Green beat ULM by 10, led FAU by seven after three quarters, and was up on Arkansas State by 10 points with four minutes left in the game before losing by four. They will finish at 3-4 in league play, and should be bet hard early in the season. NT is 0-7 ATS off a SU win the last three years. #45 Central Michigan http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/1...higan/#more-969 Who is No. 44?: You know, it’s funny, but this university has enough club sports (over 30 all told) that maybe its students should go play intramurals, brother!

He's really been flying under the radar. Can't find one iota about him in Rivals or Scout .

North Texas Todd Dodge: "We didn't win a lot of games, but we made a lot of progress last year." How about, "My boy (Riley) is going to riddle every secondary in the Sun Belt." Dodge's son was one of the top QB prospects in Texas last year. http://www.dnj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A...311/1006/SPORTS

#46 Boston College http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/1...llege/#more-967 Who is No. 45?: The only team on the Countdown to win a Division II national championship game and an F.B.S. conference championship game.

Long article Leaning Tower of Vizza You have to feel for North Texas quarterback Giovanni Vizza. Last season he was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year after throwing for 2,388 yards. This year? The Mean Green have a new head coach, Todd Dodge, who was able to lure away a stud passer who had originally committed to Texas. Dodge's recruiting trick: he's the kid's father. If Vizza can beat out Riley Dodge this autumn, you have to admire him. Actually, you have to admire him simply for not transferring. Non-BCS teams can still pack a big punch http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/25507027/sit...#storyContinued

If that's true how are the shares for USU and Idaho within around $55,000 of Tech ?

They are already getting a share of the conference payouts. Honolulu Advertiser

Post by Reality Check on the Tech board. ULL's Sun Belt payout for 2006-2007 was $804,780. Any payout advantage Tech has had over the last several years is gone for 2007-2008. And the WAC was up against it though I would have kept Boise at home and sent Fresno to Hawai'i. There was no good choice as both Fresno and Boise had played on the islands within 13 days of each other in November. Keeping Boise at home would have increased ticket revenues and eliminated Boise's travel expenses. Sending Fresno to Hawai'i would have only marginally increased travel expenses. The conference decisions might have been best for the two teams, but they were definitely not the best for the financial bottom line.

Some of the money also has been coming from entrance fees for USU, Idaho & NMSU. Tech's WAC dividend check was for $855,015 and it included $410,555 in BCS monies, down from $1.1 million ($559,222 BCS) in 2007. Tech received $667,000 from the WAC in 2006 without a BCS bowl game. "It certainly helps, but it's not the solution. It won't pay the bills and won't put food on the table," Tech athletic director Derek Dooley said, speaking figuratively. So Lamar dropped football in the 80s (?) while playing in the Southland (?). Was it due to losing $$$, fan interest, a combination of both or ? Why will they be successful now ?

SpaceRaider post on the Muts board. At the annual league spring meeting, Sun Belt members learned its football payout from membership in the 11-league Bowl Championship Series. And for the first time, the Sun Belt passed the Mid-American Conference — yes, the MAC, which has been playing football at the highest level for six-plus decades — in the BCS payout. And get this: With just one more key non-conference win, the Sun Belt would have passed Conference USA — the chief geographic challenger for southeastern mid-majors. Will Sun Belt football build on it's success ? http://www.dnj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A.../807100311/1006
