" I think really the x-factor in that whole equation on defense might be the return of the defensive coordinator who had North Texas’ defense ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation when he coached there in a previous stint."

Exerpt from the College Football News Big XII Lookahead North Texas at Kansas State 7:05 PM Saturday, August 30th - Kansas State is the wild-card in the Big 12 race. On its way to a great 2007, everything fell apart as the defense collapsed and the offense couldn’t keep up as the Wildcats lost four straight to close on a sour note. In an attempt for an instant fix, head coach Ron Prince brought in an army of JUCO transfers to beef up both sides of the ball. With North Texas this week and a decent Montana State team to follow, there are two games to warm up for a trip to Louisville. - North Texas might not be any good, but it’s a whole bunch of fun. The Kansas State secondary will be tested by a hit-or-miss Mean Green passing attack that cranked out 601 yards against SMU and eight touchdown passes against Navy. Head coach Todd Dodge is known for cultivating star quarterbacks, and he has a great one in his son, true freshman Riley Dodge. North Texas: Is the father going to turn the reins of the offense over to the son? Not quite yet. Giovanni Vizza was named the starting quarterback, and while he has the experience, and was the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Dodge is the more talented option. First, Dodge has to get 100% healthy after suffering a shoulder injury last year, and while he can play if needed, he’s not quite back to form. Kansas State: As the biggest mystery of 2008, the Wildcats are also looking at some position changes. With a secondary that more or less disappeared late last year, receiver Tony Purvis and Cedric Wilson have switched sides of the ball. Purvis will now play as a CB, while Wilson adds some depth at safety. Prince also noted that DE Jack Hayes has left the program citing the competition for playing time. North Texas has to … start throwing when it gets off the bus. UNT might try to establish a little control with a bit of a running game here and there, but this is a passing team that will throw it more than 50 times. The KSU defense struggled over the second half of last year and ended up allowing 259 passing yards per game. Kansas State has to … start hitting Vizza from the opening bell. Vizza is tough, but UNT struggled in pass protection allowing 39 sacks and plenty of other big hits. The Wildcat pass rush should be more fearsome with Ian Campbell moving back to end after playing linebacker last year. Keep an eye on … Kansas WR Deon Murphy. Murphy is a lightning fast receiver who is expected to break out of the shadow cast by the unlikely emergence of Jordy Nelson. Murphy caught 56 passes and five TDs in 2007, and with the departure of Nelson to the NFL, he becomes the best target for QB Josh Freeman. Murphy is also a fantastic return man, but if he’s not a top receiver, there will be some work to do on offense over the following few weeks. The glaring stat: the two teams combined allowed 516 passing yards per game.

What You Get For $14 Million Dollars!

Saw a post on another board re: FAU's stadium hopes. Seems they will be trying to stay within a $ 48Million expense by going with an "erector set" type aluminum seat stadium that is projected to cost $1,600 per seat. Apparently a 30,000 seater probably similar to what UCF put up. Of course they've got to find the money. -

Travel Cost May Force Realignment Soon !
MeanGreen61 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
With all the other problems: ie: no one at UNT doing their job to better athletics or acquire a new stadium, hoped to be key players not being eligible to play, being in a conference that many posters hate along with what many call an apathetic student body & overall lack of interests is it time to just shut down & move on ? -
#43 Purdue http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/1...urdue/#more-972 Hint to the next team, No. 42: Amazingly, this program has won seven games or less in a season only three times since 1968. Unfortunately, each of those three occasions have come since 2002.

Wondering how big a bump we'll experience in total travel expense ? -
Post on the WAC board by SolarBronco. : Today 9:35 AM Travel costs might force Conference Realignment very soon. The price of fuel is about to change the college football landscape for alot of schools. Check out this from the Scott Slant article about Hawaii's travel costs. Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan says the school’s charters to San Jose State and Idaho last season cost $85,000 and $125,000, respectively. The quote for a charter flight to the Fresno State game this year? How about $319,000? It’s going to be really interesting to check out the college sports landscape two years from now. The rise in fuel costs is gonna hurt all of us smaller sized schools. Travel to Hawaii every other year is gonna be a killer for all of us. The price will be even higher next year. I can see some conference realignments coming soon due to the price of travel. Maybe all of this MWC/WAC talk isn't such a bad idea after all? If it costs $319,000 to travel from Hawaii, it must cost the same to travel there. What about traveling to La Tech? http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=451&f=2368&t=2685864

Off the Froggie board New Mexico rejects $1.8 million to move game to San Antonio ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- New Mexico rejected a $1.8 million offer to move a Sept. 6 home game against Texas A&M to San Antonio. Athletics director Paul Krebs said UNM declined the third-party offer because administrators didn't want to deprive New Mexico fans of seeing one of the nation's storied programs at University Stadium. "We have to develop our fan base," Krebs said. "Moving the game to San Antonio, I think, would sell out our fans, would be a decision made purely for economic reasons. I think it sends the wrong message to our fans and to our football program." An unidentified third party approached New Mexico at the end of the 2006 season, just after the school had signed a home-and-home contract with the Aggies, and offered the Lobos $1.5 million to move the game. When UNM declined, the offer eventually increased to $1.8 million by June 2007. New Mexico again turned it down. Coach Rocky Long said he believes New Mexico in years past would have "jumped all over that kind of proposal because you're looking for a quick fix." He supports the decision, saying it will help build loyalty. "I don't see it as a gamble," Long said. "I see it as an investment to further our program to the point that someday it'll be a nationally recognized program with an established, solid fan base." The Lobos are scheduled to travel to Texas A&M on Sept. 5, 2009.
