  1. Yes, this is a "no lose" situation for them. Win and it obviously was purely a coaching problem. Lose and, well, the new coaches didn't have time to install their systems.
  2. A quick Google search turned up this - https://www.nationaleaglecenter.org/live-eagle-programs/outreach/ National Eagle Center. I'll bet we could make arrangements for six shows a year at some kind of special price.
  3. I believe we played Pacific in the 46 Optimist Bowl and Nevada in the 48 Salad Bowl.
  4. For those wanting an excellent source for historical data on UNT (and elsewhere on the same site, every other D1 team), check out this.
  5. We need to find a balance between these two courses of action. Each kid is an individual story and no, we will never catch everyone. There are kids who want to "go away" to school mean at least a three hour drive and we're not going to get most of those. There are always girlfriends to follow and we aren't going to get most of those either. But, we simply should be getting more of the better quality players than we have been. And frankly, it doesn't take a huge number to make a significant difference! Literally, two or three extra a year will add up quickly to more wins for our team.
  6. Why not let the players decide if they accept an invitation to go with a 5-7 record? It's obviously not a cut and dry situation - there's lots of gray. For seniors, there isn't a "next year" and the APR results have a lot to do with their efforts.
  7. This was a terrible mistake by SMU. i suspect a lot of large donors are not happy about this and those donors know it's not the fault of an intern. Interns don't get to make decisions at that level. I don't know if heads will actually roll - probably not - but a number of folks are going to watched a lot more closely. By the way, a lot of places could make this same mistake!
  8. Did anyone realistically pick us to beat La Tech or Western? UTSA was one I thought we'd at least be better, but the other two just weren't going to happen this year.
  9. "Better football through chemistry," - Phil Elliot, North Dallas 40
  10. You nailed it! If there are going to be 5-7 teams picked anyway, then being able to say our grades got us in is certainly a plus. However, we still can get two more wins and hopefully will be 6-6. Theoretically, we can still be 7-5 but that will take a near miracle this weekend. But, it's possible!
  11. You made me curious so I checked. ULM started playing football in 1931. They moved from NAIA to 1AA in 1974 and joined the Southland when it moved to 1AA. They won a 1AA national championship in 87. And they moved up FBS in 94 the year before us.
  12. Yes, college refs can make a nice supplemental income. You need to start young - a few years doing pee-wee games, then a few Jr High years, probably five in high school games and then you get to division III and start working your way up in college. You can't progress from one level to the next without a lot of positive recommendations from coaches of the teams you refed. I know it used to take about 12 years to get to the Sun Belt level. I think there were a number of terrible calls in the game, but we also committed a number of penalties. The late hit which might have been out of bounds was just stupid. Most of the holding penalties on us were valid. And I know at least two were well away from the play. My objection was La Tech's line was holding all night, especially #75.
  13. Yes on all. But there were several times the receivers were past the sticks, turned and saw Fine being chased and came back to make the pass easier. There has to be a balance between coming back to help the QB and staying close enough to fall for the 1st down. It's not easy, but no one said playing FBS football was easy!
  14. Good find!
  15. It's not a poll but the actual rankings. There are no judgement calls but just simple math. I agree with TFLF, it is great to be on an academic list with Georgia Tech, Duke, two service academies and the rest!
  16. Litrrell never said he was talking about less than 10 minutes in the game. At the start of the 4th Quarter we were down 14 with 14:17 left. We had just scored 17 points in just over 15 minutes so we had some momentum. We had plenty of time IF we would have stopped them and IF we could move the ball. We did neither.
  17. I did a series of feature stories for KNTU on the FEMA facility back in 1979. I interviewed a number of the people who worked there, but everything was carefully supervised by their public info guy. Can't remember how many I interviewed but it was a five part series. They closed the blast door for me so I could record the sound. It was set up for "continuation of the government" after a nuclear attack. They had finished a drill the day before i toured and still had a number of things set up. They had a map with tracking the spread of radiation based on weather from the day before. There was a conference table with note pads and phones and name plates designating each seat as "Dept. of Commerce," "Postal Service," etc. I remember there was NOT a spot for the DOD marked and they didn't answer my question about why. That was one of the few questions they didn't answer. I asked if that was the place where they had planned to take Johnson from his ranch back in the 60s. PR guy said they couldn't confirm that, then showed me the VIP suite with a small bedroom and bath - everyone else would sleep in bunks. He also showed me a place on the grounds designated to land a helicopter. Here is an article I just found that includes a photo of a DMN article written when the place was being built in 61. Check out the price - $2.5 million for a blast protected facility that could run much of the US government. I think NT spends more than that on annual restroom maintenance.
  18. So the team thinks it's a rivalry. Many NT student's think it's a rivalry. The NT university administration think it's enough of a rivalry to provide buses. The UTSA team thinks it's a rivalry. The UTSA students think it's a rivalry. And the UTSA administration considers it a rivalry. The two schools play every year. But it's not a rivalry to some. Instead, some suggest MTSU (whom we are unlikely to play again for at least two more years), Arky State (no games planned) or Texas State (again, no games planned). I guess actually playing football games isn't a part of the rivalry equation. As for SMU, they are also a rival. You can have more than one - just ask UT, Alabama, Florida, USC or Ohio State.
  19. Poor spelling and grammar plus wrong words mean the writer was sloppy. If they are sloppy on writing they are likely even MORE sloppy in their reporting, research and analysis. I've never understood not writing an article for publication in Word. You get all the spelling and grammar checking you'll likely need. On my Mac, I also select option-esc and have each paragraph read back to me as I notice errors when I hear them that my eye's sometimes "auto-correct" when I just read. Some thing still slip through but very, very few. No, I don't do that for basic posts here or other social media, but for real articles, blogs, business emails - YES.
  20. While I would like to have the division schedule more balanced, there is a problem in what would have to happen to fix it. Likely it would mean giving up a home game to get the schedule fixed. We are do to play everyone at home next year and fixing the schedule means we'd have to play at least one of those away. No one here is going to like that option.
  21. I guess the author means it becomes more difficult for the winner to get to six wins. But in theory BOTH NT and UTKFC could get to six wins no matter the outcome this Saturday. I hope the team is just focused on each game at a time as looking a head for such a young team is a recipe for disaster! The team has shown they are capable of winning six game - even capable of winning out. But they are very young, the staff is still very new and a lot of things can go wrong.
  22. Upper classmen teach the young'uns which games mean more or less. So if our players are thinking this is a rivalry and pass that one, it will become one.
  23. While I think the salaries are crazy, no one is holding a gun to any of the school's boards. They could say no if they wanted to. Even members of some of the big time alumni associations have questioned the salaries but no one has the guts to say "stop." It was rumored that he was interested in interviewing, but no one was sure how serious he was.
  24. Both the Heart of Dallas Bowl and the Armed Forces Bowl are owned by ESPN Regional Television. I've talked to Bryan Delgado about tickets for vets to the Armed Forces Bowl and he also offered some to the Heart of Dallas bowl. His business card is two sided with the Armed Forces Bowl logo on one side and the Heart of Dallas Bowl on the other. Check out the staff for each bowl, here is the Heart of Dallas and here is the Armed Forces. You'll notice they look similar. Since it's the same team running both bowls, I think the difference is more in the facilities. ESPN gets a LOT of input into who is in what bowl. Yes, they definitely want the largest crowd at every one of their bowls at it generates more revenue and looks better on TV which helps viewer number and into generates more revenue.
