Florida State officially leaving ACC?
VideoEagle replied to Dannymacfan's topic in Conference ReAlignment
I think this move has turned all well for both SMU and the American conference. SMU got to leave the America, something some of their alumni had been despite for. The American was able to bring in Army to replace SMU. Army is clearly a bigger national brand to include next time media rights are negotiated. It really is a win win! -

I will bet there are some Dedman alumni amount those who contributed to the $100 million. Those folks might be willing the help the ACC with their case. -
Florida State officially leaving ACC?

Interesting. If you believe SMU’s numbers, they could easily raise $575 million. SMU raised about $100 million in under a week. Yet Florida State, a much bigger football brand, says $572 is too severe a penalty and is suing to reduce the amount. This a a real “get your popcorn ready to watch” moment. -
Every year I read threads about there being too many bowl games. We have the number of bowl games because two groups want the - the University Presidents and ESPN and the other broadcasters. The Presidents like the games because they are a reward for the teams, the organizations that contribute, students and especially alumni. I bet every UTSA alumnus will be getting a letter talking about the Frisco Bowl and subtly asking for donations, not just to athletics but to every department. Rice periodically considers dropping football and so far each time they have had enough other areas of the university (and alumni) say having a team and going to the occasional bowl increasing overall donations. ESPN likes the games and generally is satisfied with the ratings. Yeah, there's always a low rated game or two, but generally, the ratings are still higher than the alternatives they have. ESPN Events now owns or at least manages at least 17 different bowl games. Locally, the same ESPN team runs the Frisco Bowl, the ServproBowl and the Armed Forces Bowl. I think raising the requirement to an "over .500 record" is likely a good idea, then the exceptions if needed would be .500 teams. I think using .500 is better than "7 wins" as a few teams play different numbers of games.

Good article on NSD and the Portal by Kevin Sherrington in today’s DMN. My favorite line - Don’t get too worked up about your school’s signing class one way or another, because chances are it’s not for keeps. Here is a link but it’s behind the DMN paywall.

The SEC and B1G would never let that pass. Too many of their teams depend on non conference wins to get to 6 or 7.
-
I hope they think they don’t have to prepare for us. Being overlooked by other teams is an advantage for us.

True, but having players that can read will make coaching easier.

Texas State High School Football Championships

This!!!! Look at what the Big XII did by bringing in a person with media experience over a college AD. People thought the Big XII was crazy bringing in Brett Yormark, yet he got them a better media deal and could put the Big XII 2024 in what is arguably an equal position to where they were in 2022! A media savvy negotiator is more important than college athletics experience!

I have laugh as this is getting ridiculous! I saw a post elsewhere that says there are now over 7,000 in the portal. I’m not sure if that’s accurate or not. With 133 FBS scrolls, that only 11,305 possible scholarships and some are open from graduation.

Actually the last coach to get hired away to what be became a P5 conference team was Jerry Moore who was hired by Texas Tech after the 1980 season. He was the last coach to leave with a.500 record or better before Seth.

So when they leave us do we let them come back?
VideoEagle replied to Tommy Gadberry's topic in Mean Green Football
The Boise State coach isn't just giving up because his starting quarterback entered the portal. He's scheduling a meeting with the player and his folks to discuss what Boise can offer to get him to stay. -
That was what the story was. Of course, he never directly commented and KState claimed they were never interested in him as a coach.

Thanks, Paul Blake. We'll let you know.

Seth was the first (non-interim) coach to leave with a .500 or better record since 1980. He was only the second coach in at least 40 years to have back-to-back nine-win seasons. When he arrived, NT had been to one bowl game in 11 years, and during his tenure, we went to five bowls in six years. He changed the standard from "Can you get to any bowl game?" to "How many bowl games can you win?" I don't have the exact numbers handy, but roughly 60% of D1 football coaches have less than a .500 record after 5 years putting Seth in the (roughly) Top 40% of D1 football head coaches. Unquestionably, he raised the program to a much higher level than it was when he arrived.

I think program sales are going increase as no one will know who the players are!

While I'm happy for the success of those walk-ons, I think this shows we've had a problem evaluating talent. Don't get me wrong - NO ONE always gets talent evaluation right. And almost every team has a walk-on that was misevaluated and later earned a scholarship. But NT has been having too many walk-ons outperforming scholarship guys.

Can you name three examples in the last five years of a team firing a coordinator mid-season and that unit improving its performance? Can it happen? Yes, but very rarely. The majority of the time the unit remains mostly the same.

Grading First Year Head Coaches (with two games to go)
VideoEagle replied to keith's topic in Mean Green Football
Thanks for doing this! I notice the pattern reported in a formal study from 2012 still holds. Teams with 6-6 or better records have about a 1 in 3 chance of improving their record with a new coach. This year, of the nine 6-6 or better teams that got new coaches, three improved their records from the year before. It doesn't seem to matter if you are a P5 or G5, bringing in a new coach only has a 33% chance of improving the first year IF you are .500 or better! The study from 2012 looked back over eight years and found the same pattern.
